League Cup

Great League Cup Quarter-Final

Despite the clocks going forward, and an hour less in bed, the girls were up for the game at home on a beautiful, sunny morning against East Goscote. This game was a battle for a place in the semi-final of the League Cup. The team was made up of Alice in goal; Rose and Nina in defence; Laura, and Ellie on the wings; Neve and Kiran in midfield; Erin and Simi were up front. Kylie and Mya started on the bench. The Owls started brilliantly. Everyone seemed up for the game. The Owls were quick to push forward at the start of the game, and within minutes the girls had won a throw in, taken by Neve, which Erin got to with her head, but it was saved by the keeper. East Goscote replied and pushed back. Nina pressured their striker well, and the resulting shot was well saved by Alice. The ball was passed up the pitch well and within the first 5 minutes Oadby had another couple of chances. A free kick was given to the Owls to the left of the box, and Erin struck it well, narrowly putting just left of the post. The resulting goal kick had the Owls running back toward their own goal, with Rose putting on a spurt of speed to get back for the ball and shield it from the opposition so it went out harmlessly for a goal kick. Alice shot far up the field, and East Goscote were forced to send the ball out of play for a throw in, taken by Neve. Erin got the ball and again struck fiercely, this time just above the goal. The ball was going end to end. Fantastic team work and passing from Ellie, Neve, Laura and Kiran meant that Oadby were really dominating the play in midfield. More attempts on goal from the girls, so within the first 10 minutes there were 5 or 6 real chances for the Owls. After 10 minutes Kylie came on and replaced Ellie. The play continued to hot up. Neve took a throw-in, which Simi managed to get on the end of. She got around two defenders to strike at goal. The keeper saved, sending the ball out for a corner. Neve took the corner, finding Simi again, who had another close shot on goal saved by the keeper. East Goscote tried to rally and push up the field more. Half-way through the first half, good linking play by Rose, Kylie and Neve led to a free kick being given to the Owls. Erin struck hard, hitting the cross-bar. East Goscote’s keeper cleared and again Rose and Nina had to defend well to drive them back. Rose made a run through their midfield and tried to create a chance for the forwards. The team were playing superbly, with players battling to get to the ball first, more chances falling to the Owls as the minutes went by. Kiran laid a ball on for Erin, from the centre of the pitch, which Erin struck well and again the goal keeper saved. When the half-time whistle blew, it was amazing that the score remained at 0-0!

After a well-earned half-time break the teams came back still full of energy, determined to win. East Goscote tried to come back fighting, with Rose, Laura and Nina having to defend well for the first 10 minutes after the return of play. More chances were happening on both sides. Simi, Kiran, Erin all had chances with shots going wide or being saved. It really was totally thrilling play. Kylie, Neve and Laura were helping defend against mounting pressure, with Neve making an excellent clearance in front of goal. With 10 minutes to go Oadby Owls seemed to up their determination even more. Neve took a throw in, and threw it well into the area. Unfortunately, it bounced the wrong way and went out for a goal kick. The keeper cleared and struck the ball long and high. The ball landed well for East Goscote and Alice was forced to make a terrific save, keeping the Owls hopes up, and still in the game. The last 5 minutes, and Alice cleared the ball from the Owls goal, Erin ran forward and had another shot on goal, saved by the keeper. More pressure forced a corner for Oadby, taken by Neve, which Kiran headed just wide of goal.

Finally, in the closing minutes Neve took a throw-in, and after a scrappy few passes, Erin finally connected with the ball on the outside of the box and struck it into the back of the net. GOALLLLL!!!! With just a couple of minutes left the Owls stood vigilant in defence, and still tried to take an opportunity to score another, but as the final whistle blew, the Owls achieved a well-deserved 1-0 victory.

A brilliant performance by the whole team (even the coaches had to some work, in order to retrieve the ball from the ditches, and keep the game moving!). Teamwork and spirit was superb, and all the Owls mums watching from the side-lines had a Mother’s Day treat to be proud of!

Great Defending from the Owls

Weather was cloudy, cold but dry.

10 mins into the match Owls went down a goal. Possession was 50/50. Heads went down a bit. Just before half time Neve managed a superb turn and shoot which didn't deserve just to be a fraction wide.

In the second half Alice made a great save. 45 mins East Goscote scored again. 2-0. Two more great saves from Alice kept us in the match. We had lots of set play from corners but just couldn't convert them into a goal as a few headers went over the bar. 65 mins East Goscote scored again. 3-0.

It wasn't to be our day. Rose put a great performance in at the back with some great tackles and clearance kicks which earned her player of the day.

Good to see Ellie have a longer stint on the pitch. Her fitness has come on in leaps and bounds. County champions one week and lose to East Goscote the next. That's football. We all have to appreciate the hard times to enjoy the good. Heads up girls and good luck for next week.

A bad day at the office!

It was a cold cloudy morning and AFC Leicester were the visitors. Owls started with Alice in goal, Mya and Chiara were the centre-halves. The wing backs were Rose and Laura, central midfield was Kiran and Neve, Simi and Erin were playing as centre forwards.

AFC started well and were up for the game, they were attacking the ball ahead of the Owls. AFC were playing most of the game on their right and it wasn't long before they took a shot from the right which was unstoppable. One nil to AFC. They continued their attacks down the right and managed to score another goal with their very next shot.

Owls responded with a goal from Simi but straight from the kick off AFC scored another with a precise shot into the corner. 3-1 AFC. AFC were winning all the 50-50 challenges and from more shots on goal they scored 3 more goals, the half ended 6-1 to AFC.

The second half was a tighter affair. The squad was used, Katie replaced Mya, Laura was replaced by Nina and Kylie replaced Neve. The Owls were now getting to the ball first and started winning tackles and were rewarded by a goal from Nina. Kiran and Nina were tackling well and getting the ball to Rose and Simi who was now playing on the right wing. Erin was working hard and causing AFC some problems. Katie was challenging well together with Chiara. The final substitution was made when Ellie replaced Chiara.

Owls worked hard in the second half but were caught out with a couple of long balls which lead to two more goals from AFC.

Final score was 8-2 to AFC. Not the best game for the Owls but a better second half. We move on and take the positives from a bad day at the office.

County Cup

Owls make it to the final!

Another beautiful crisp sunny morning greeted the Owls as they took on Blaby Bullets in the semi-final of the County Cup.

The starting line-up was Alice in goal, Chiara & Mya in defence, Kiran & Neve in midfield, Erin & Simi up front, with Laura & Rose playing as wing backs. Ellie, Katie, Kylie & Nina made up the bench.

The Owls have only played Blaby Bullets once previously, so it was difficult to know how they would do in this game.

The Owls started very brightly with some great passing football, all the team playing confidently and being aware of the players around them.

The Owls got a throw in deep inside the Blaby half, which was beautifully dropped onto Erin’s head who flicked it onto Laura, who was perfectly placed in the box for her to smash it into the back of the net! 1 – 0 Owls

10 minutes later the Owls were under pressure from Blaby; however they managed to make a clearance to Rose, who made an excellent long range pass to Simi, who was able to run with the ball and make a good shot to score the second goal of the game to make it 2-0.

With the Owls playing so well it was time to make a couple of substitutions with Nina & Katie coming on to replace Kiran & Mya.

This didn’t stop the Owls as they continued to press forward and create chances. Soon after, the Owls won a corner that Neve dropped into the box where Rose was waiting. Rose controlled the ball and then scored the 3rd goal for the Owls.

Just before the half time Whistle, a reaching pass from Erin found its way to Kylie, who showed great strength to hold the ball up, create a bit of space for herself and then slot it away  to make it 4 – 0 to the Owls.

Despite some promising attacks from Blaby, nothing was getting by Chiara, Katie & Mya; all of them were rock solid in defence.

HT 4 – 0 to the Owls!

By now the Owls were in full flow, and this meant that we could test some of the girls in unfamiliar positions. Rose moved to left centre half, Simi to right wing back, Ellie to left wing back & Nina playing in the midfield. It has to be said that they all looked very comfortable in their new positions. They were able to play passing football and attack at will. Nina & Kiran were bossing the midfield, Ellie & Simi were effective going up and down the flanks & Kylie & Erin were a constant thorn in the Blaby defence.

In the 10th minute of the second half, an unfortunate pass from a Blaby defender was collected by the Blaby Goal keeper, which the Referee deemed to be an offence and gave an indirect free kick for the Owls deep inside the Blaby goal/penalty area. Neve made a smart touch to move the ball to Simi who smashed it into the goal to make it 5-0.

All credit to Blaby, they didn’t give up and tested Alice a number of times, however Alice was at the top of her game today and there was no way that she was going to let anything get by her.

A very good performance from all the Owls. Every player played well and did exactly what was asked of them. They passed the ball well, were committed in the challenge and scored some good goals as well.

Well done girls you fully deserve to go through to the County Cup final!!!

Oadby & Wigston just too strong for the Owls

Another bright sunny Sunday as the Owls took on Oadby & Wigston (O&W) for the second time this season.

This was the first game for our new recruit Farnaz. Farnaz has been training with us since the beginning of the season and is a welcome addition to the team.

The starting line-up was Alice in goal, Ellie & Katie in defence, Erin & Neve in midfield, Kylie & Simi up front, with Laura & Rose playing as wing backs. Farnaz, Mya & Nina made up the bench.

Whilst we’ve done well against O&W previously, it’s always a close game, so it’s difficult to predict what might happen. Both sides started very well, with good strong football from both teams.

The Owls played some good attacking football, with Neve & Erin making some great passes to Kylie & Simi. However, despite some good pressure from the Owls, it was O&W who scored first from a corner.

The Owls then got a corner themselves, which was beautifully dropped into the box by Neve, partially cleared by the goalkeeper, and fell to Kylie, who struck the ball really well on the half volley, only for it to ricochet off the crossbar!

A few minutes later the Owls made a couple of substitutions, with Nina & Mya replacing Ellie & Katie plus Farnaz coming on for Laura at right wingback. With some good passing moves, the Owls created a couple of good chances, with a number of corners resulting from each attack. However, once again it was O&W who scored next to make it 2-0.

O&W have improved a lot this season and their committed approach was snuffing out many of the Owls attacks. However, Erin got a goal towards the end of the first half for the Owls to go in 2-1 down at the break.

The second half started just as the first, with both teams really going for it! The Owls continued to press and won a corner. Another great corner from Neve was planted straight onto Erin’s head; however her header just went over the crossbar.

It was truly a game that could have gone either way, however late in the second half; O&W scored a good goal to make it 3-1, which pretty much ended it for the Owls.

It was a very good game from both sides. O&W deserved their win as they pressed hard throughout the game and didn’t give the Owls the chance to control the game. With a bit more strength in the challenge & more attacking of the ball when in the air, the game could easily have gone to the Owls.

Never mind, onward to next week for the Semi-final of the County Cup!!!

Blood, sweat but no tears!

Another bright sunny Sunday as the Owls travelled to AFC Leicester for traditionally one of the tougher games of the season.

The starting line-up was Alice in goal, Kiran & Mya in defence, Holly & Neve in midfield, Erin & Simi up front, with Laura & Rose playing as wing backs.

We’ve had mixed results over the years against AFC, who seem to have started this season very well with a clean sheet of victories.

Both sides started well, with good passing football from both teams. AFC looked strong up front yet wobbly at the back, which is unusual for them. Soon after, the Owls started to play some good attacking football, with Neve & Erin making some great passes to Simi who was finding a way to get in behind the AFC defence.

Disaster struck in the 9th minute though when AFC put a good cross into the box, which Alice couldn’t reach, allowing their striker to latch onto the ball at the back post to score the opening goal of the game. 1-0 AFC.

A few minutes later the Owls made a substitution, with Nina replacing Holly in midfield, who was starting to tire. The extra energy in midfield made a difference and put AFC on the back foot. With some good passing moves, the Owls created a couple of good chances, one of which rebounded off the keeper and fell to the AFC defender, who failed to clear it, allowing Simi to side foot it over the line 1-1.

AFC were still dangerous on the break and each time they got possession, they would look for the long ball over the top. Fortunately, Kiran and Mya were up to the task and snuffed out each AFC attack.

In the second half the Owls really turned up the pressure, with wave after wave of attacks. Laura & Rose were working really hard up and down the flanks and were doing well in both attack and defence. The AFC defence & keeper were doing a great job though and despite all the pressure, the Owls couldn’t find a way through. However that all changed when the Owls were awarded a corner. As the Owls lined up on the edge of the box, Neve took a powerful in swinging corner which came off a defender and went straight into the net to make it 1-1.

About half-way through the second half, Nina had to come off due to a bloody nose, and was replaced by Holly. Holly gave the midfield a big boost and put in some great tackles to cut off the AFC attacks.

As the Owls started to tire, AFC came back into the game and put some pressure on the Owls. Despite some excellent saves from Alice, the Owls couldn’t hold out in the last 5 minutes and conceded a goal to make it 2-2, which is how it stayed until the end.

The Owls were very unlucky in the end and could have won it if they’d just held out a little longer.

A fantastic performance from all the girls. Great goal keeping by Alice, solid defending by Mya & Kiran, great passing & tackling by Holly, Nina & Neve, strong attacking and defending by both Laura and Rose on the flanks, and fantastic forward play from Erin & Simi… superb stuff! The girls continue to improve with each game.

County Cup

Two late goals saves the day!

A bright sunny day greeted the Owls as they travelled to Loughborough for the 1st round of the County Cup.

The starting line-up consisted of Alice in goal, Chiara & Mya in defence, Kiran & Neve in midfield, Erin & Simi up front, with Laura & Rose playing as wing backs.

Loughborough are a good side and games against them always prove tricky and this was no exception. Both sides started well, with good passing football from both teams; however Loughborough looked very threatening on the break. After one such break, the Owls conceded a corner, which Loughborough capitalised on and scored the first goal of the game.

Soon after the Owls started to play some good football and in the 11th minute Erin scored her first goal of the day. The Owls then made a couple of substitutions, with Holly & Katie replacing Mya & Rose, with Chiara moving up to left wing back.

Loughborough were still very quick on the break and each time they hurt the Owls. It wasn’t long after that Loughborough scored the second goal of the game to make it 2-1 going into the half time break.

After HT the Owls came out determined to turn around the goal deficit. It wasn’t long before a good pass from Neve to Simi, followed by some nice dribbling allowed Simi to get a goal back for the Owls 2-2.

This didn’t stop Loughborough though, and before long they scored again to make it 3-2. It wasn’t that the Owls were playing badly; it was just that Loughborough were playing smart football and each of their attacks were quick and pacey.

The Owls made another sub with Nina coming on for Chiara. Nina did some great work in the midfield to disrupt the Loughborough attacks and hand the ball to other Owls players. However, in the 43rd minute disaster strikes and Loughborough score again to make it 3-2.

With 3 minutes to go, all looked lost for the Owls; however the Owls had a late surprise in store.  From a Loughborough goal kick, Erin collected the ball on the halfway line, controlled it and took two steps forward before smashing it at the Loughborough goal. The goal keeper had no chance as it looped over into the top left corner of the goal, surely a contender for goal of the season!

Soon after, the invigorated Owls put the pressure on Loughborough and managed to get a couple of shots off, one of which results in a corner for the Owls. Another great in swinging corner from Neve wasn’t cleared by the Loughborough defence and the ball dropped to Erin who coolly slotted it away to score her hat trick.

What a game by the Owls. Great goal keeping by Alice, solid defending by Mya, Katie, Ellie & Holly, great passing  & tacking by Kiran, Nina & Neve, strong running, dribbling & crossing by Chiara, Laura and Rose, and fantastic forward play from Erin & Simi… brilliant stuff!

It just shows why you should never give up until the final whistle!!!

Owls get back to winning ways!

Winless and goalless after two matches the Owls badly needed a performance befitting of champions.

After a bright start from the home team, the Owls settled quickly into a high tempo game and were rewarded for their pressure after 7 mins when Erin scored from close range.

0-1

The Owls were playing their best football of the season, and continued to do so when Katie & Holly came in for a straight swap at the back with Mya and Chiara.

Shortly before half time Kiran and Erin were rested as Ruth and Nina came into the action. A long kick from Alice in goal found her opposite number struggling in the windy conditions and nearly caught her out, but in the end the ball was scrambled clear.

Half time 0-1.

No changes from the Owls at the start of the 2nd half, but with the wind now against them pressure was mounting from the opponents.

A superb pass from Neve set up another attack and shortly after the same player hit a direct free kick just over the bar.

Simi had worked tirelessly up front and took a well earned rest when Erin came back on. On 40 mins, Ruth scored the Owls 2nd, following up on a shot by Erin that the O & W keeper could only parry.

0-2

What followed was a series of great saves from the opposition goalie who was keeping her team in the game. Neve took a rest and Kiran returned to midfield.

With approx. 15 mins still to go O & W pulled a goal back after the Owls hesitated and failed to clear,

1-2

With 10 mins left, Nina, Ruth Holly & Katie made way for Ellie, Simi, Mya and Neve. The match still hung in the balance but a series of late chances by the Owls were denied by great goalkeeping most noticeably when a great run & shot from Simi was matched by a fantastic one handed save.

Final whistle and The Owls had held on to record their first win of the season and more importantly a great team performance. Final score: 1-2

A tricky start for the Owls!

A breezy day greeted the players for the first game of the season against FC Aztec at Judgemeadow.

The Owls started with Alice in goal, Chiara and Mya as centre halves. The wingbacks were Laura and Rose, central midfield was Kiran and Neve, and centre forwards were Simi and Erin. The subs were Ellie, Holly & Nina.

The Owls set off at a great pace, with a number of surging runs that put the Aztec team under pressure. It wasn’t long until a good pass from Neve to Laura, who made a short darting run down the flank before making a good through ball that was picked up by Simi with her back to goal, who then turned, beat the defender and shot, narrowly missing the goal.

The Owls continue to play well with some good passing moves; however Aztec shuffled their players around and started to play much better. In fact, it wasn’t long before Aztec scored the opening goal of the game against the run of play.

In the 20th minute, the Owls made some changes with Holly & Nina coming on for Mya & Laura. However, Aztec upped their game again and scored a fine goal to take a 2 goal lead into the break.

At the start the second half the Owls start to get their passing game together, with good passes out of defence from Chiara to Neve, who made a short triangle pass to Kiran, who duly gave her the ball back. Neve then made a great through ball to Rose, who passed it to Erin, who struck the ball well, however the Aztec goalkeeper was well placed to make a good save. Better stuff from the Owls!

A substitution was then made with Ellie replacing Rose. Despite some hard work from Ellie, Kiran, Neve and Nina in the midfield, some good surging runs from Erin & Simi, plus some resolute defending from Chiara & Holly, Aztec got a tight grip on the game in the end and scored another 2 goals.

Despite the score line, there was some great shot stopping from Alice and the all the defenders.

A difficult first game for the Owls against a very good team. The Owls showed that they need resume their excellent passing game, be more committed in their tackles and take their chances when they are presented to them.

Never mind, onward & upward!!!
