League Cup

A classic game of two halves!

For the second time in two weeks the Owls made the journey over to Loughborough for their League Cup fixture against Loughborough Foxes.

Last week’s game was quite tough for the Owls as Loughborough showed what a talented side they are. The Owls lined up with V in goal, Katie & Kiran in defence, Ellie, Eva & Neve in midfield and Simi up front. The game started with a positive start from both teams. Both Katie & Kiran looked strong in defence and made some good early clearances to prevent Loughborough taking control of the game. However, after a while Loughborough started to show some of the same skills they showed last week, with effective work from their midfield eventually rewarding them with a goal. Not to be outdone, Ellie, Eva, Neve & Simi linked up with some good passing moves of their own, however they were unable to unlock a resolute Loughborough defence. Despite some good work from the Owls, Loughborough were making their possession count and it wasn’t long before they scored another well-deserved goal. Even a change of personnel with Laura replacing Ellie, couldn’t manage to make any inroads into the score line going into the half-time break.

The second half started with Alice replacing Katie in defence. Once again the Owls started brightly, passing the ball out of defence through to the midfield and beyond. This time however they were able to make an indent in the Loughborough defence, with the midfield beating their counterparts and making cutting passes through the defence. Two key moves saw both Neve and Simi receive the ball through the channels enabling them to get one on one with the goal keeper. However, the Loughborough goalie was in inspired form and made some superb saves to prevent the Owls from getting even. As the game went on Mya came on to replace Neve who had put in a real shift on the wing. The Owls couldn’t relax though as Loughborough were still dangerous and only great defensive work from Eva, Alice & Kiran, and brilliant goal keeping from V kept them at bay. The Owls where definitely on top in the second half with great running from Mya, breaking up play and making passes to open up the pitch for the Owls. Despite long periods of sustained pressure, with multiple crosses & corners, the Owls were unable make a breakthrough and score.

Overall, a very good game for the Owls against very good opposition. Both sides had a real go at each other and made it a great game to watch.

It was also a day where we had to say goodbye to V, who has been our goal keeper since the team was formed last season. In that time she has trained hard, progressed well and is without doubt one of the best goal keepers in the league! We’re all sad to see her go, however all the team and Yogi & I wish her the very best in the States, where I’m sure she’ll have a great time! Good luck V & stick with it, you’ll do well! I’m looking forward to seeing your debut for a Women’s Soccer League team in the coming seasons!

A tough game against a very good team!

Playing against a strong wind, the Owls started with V in goal, Alice & Ellie in defence, Simi, Neve & Kiran in midfield and Eva up front, with Ruth, Laura and Mya on the bench.

The game got off to a frenetic start with both teams exchanging shots and corners, with two good corners by Ellie that unfortunately no one was able to get on the end of. Loughborough start to press, however good saves by Owls keeper V kept Loughborough’s number 10 from scoring. Owls started to pass the ball well and made a good pass to Eva who made a good shot that went just over the bar. As the game went on, more pressure from Loughborough resulted in a corner, followed by a bungled goal from a goal mouth scramble. In the 17th minute Laura replaces Alice who made a great debut in defence with lots of good tackles and lots of energy. With the wind blowing hard into the faces of the Owls, Oadby struggled to get out of their half, however some good dribbling from Laura and Neve help to put some pressure on their opponents, however before long the Loughborough pressure resulted in a 2nd goal just before half time.

Alice replaced V in goal in the second half due to V injuring her foot. The Owls started the half well with Eva and Simi continuing to press upfront with some good shots. In the 12th minute Ruth and Mya came on to replace Ellie and Neve. Some good defensive work on the right hand side from Kiran prevented Loughborough scoring as they hit the post! Later in the game Laura is replaced by Neve as the Owls chase the game. A good goal kick from Alice with wind behind it was chased down by Simi who was one on one with defender. Simi beat the defenders with some great footwork and scored in 21st minute. After this Loughborough struck back and scored just before the final whistle. A very good game, with good performances all round. Loughborough showed what a good side they are, however if the Owls can close down the opposition quickly and get their passing game together, they are a match for any team!

Nobody gets by V!

Market Harborough kick off on a very windy Sunday morning, Oadby start well with two shots on goal inside the first couple of minutes both from Eva against the wind! Four minutes into the game Harborough are on the attack, without a brave save from V it would have been a Harborough goal. Ten minutes in it is still 0-0, the 1st Oadby corner of the game the result of good tackling from all the Owls. Eleven minutes in and a shot and goal from Eva, 1-0 Oadby. Harborough re-start and Oadby are on the ball again quickly, another shot on goal from Eva going just over the bar. Kiran gets in some good tackles, to force another Oadby corner. Harborough are getting back into the game with the wind on their side and get a corner. Neve wins the ball and goes on a solo run, passes to Eva who shoots, but a good save from the Harborough keeper. Strong passing from the Owls keeps the pressure on the opposition, as the strength of the wind increases. A shot from Eva is just wide, tenacious running from Simi results in her getting the ball to Eva who shoots, 2-0 to Oadby the result! Harborough re-start, with another great run back by Laura! Neve tries to shot from inside her own half but then drops back to do some good defending. The whistle blows for half time 2-0, a great first half for the Owls.

As the second half gets underway, the wind is on the Owls side and Ruth starts with a great tackle! Harborough attack but again strong tackling from Oadby wins the ball back. A skilful run from Neve going around three Harborough players gets the ball to Mya who passes to Kiran who has a shot on goal. Saved but a corner won, Mya shoots and gets her reward, 3-0 to Oadby. As Harborough re-start Oadby are the better team, pressurising the opposition with corner after corner, there must be another goal! Ellie taking a great corner, then the next from Neve. A great half from both girls who go off (Laura and Neve) who are replaced by Eva and Simi. Kiran does a good lay off, a shot from Ellie results in goal kick. Oadby win the ball again, a shot from Mya, another corner with a strong cross from Ellie saved by the keeper. A good tackle from Eva but the Harborough player goes down injured, great sportsmanship from Eva as she helps the player up and shakes hands. After a long shot from Simi in the dying minutes of the game, the final whistle blows. 3-0 the final result, in the end a good win for the Owls on a very windy day. All the girls played very well, and a well done the captain Kiran. The Player of the Day award went the V for her brave saves and keeping yet another clean sheet, she will be sadly missed!

Neve rules the midfield!

A cool but dry morning greeted the Owls for the home fixture against Anstey. Games against Anstey have always been close and competitive, with either side capable of a win. The Owls lined up with V in goal, Chiara & Mya in defence, Simi, Neve and Eva in midfield and Ruth up front.

The game started with both teams really going for it. Both Chiara & Mya had to make some good early clearances to prevent Anstey getting a foothold in and around the goal keeper area. Whilst the game was a little scrappy to start off with, after a while the Owls started to get the ball on the floor pass more effectively. Neve was instrumental in this and it wasn’t long before her accurate passing to Simi, Eva & Ruth put the Owls in the ascendency. In a driving move from the midfield, Neve took control of the ball, moved it to the left to go by one player, then moving it to the right to go by another before striking the ball with her right foot to score an excellent goal for the Owls. This gave the Owls much more confidence and led to a number of moves originated from Mya & Chiara, through the front four of Eva, Neve, Simi and Ruth leading to a number of narrow misses. The Owls went into the half time break one – nil up and brimming with confidence.

The second half started with Laura replacing Ruth and a couple of changes formations wise, with Simi going up front, Eva moving to left mid and Laura right mid. Once again the Owls started brightly, calmly passing the ball out of defence through to the midfield and beyond. However, it wasn’t long before Anstey moved into another gear making a series of great breaks through midfield to create goal scoring opportunities. Thankfully, the defensive duo of Chiara & Mya was at hand to snuff out any threat, leaving V largely untroubled. About 10 minutes in after a period of Anstey pressure, Owls broke from midfield to pressure the Anstey defence leading to Anstey conceding a corner. Simi calmly stepped forward to take the corner. Anstey seemed to have a good defensive shape when Simi whipped in an in-swinging corner, only for it to bounce just before the Anstey defender, who missed the clearance, allowing the ball to bounce over the goalkeeper and go straight into the goal. 2 – 0 Owls. There after the Owls were mainly in control, with Laura & Simi making a series of probing runs down the right hand side and Eva down the left, with Neve controlling everything in the middle of the park. In a late move, Chiara and Neve linked together to put Eva through on goal, where she set herself nicely to strike the ball firmly, however the resulting shot narrowly went over the crossbar. Overall, a very good game for the Owls against good opposition. Both sides had a real go at each other and made it a great game to watch.

County Cup

A frosty surface awaited the Owls as they arrived early to warm up for this semi-final, which was set to be an intriguing encounter given that they had previously not scored a win on this ground. Added to this curious statistic, was the fact that they had not played for several weeks. The Oadby outfit had been warmed and drilled for half-an-hour by the time the home side appeared and as the game kicked-off, the early exchanges suggested this was a management masterstroke as the Owls passed the ball around well, looked sharper and created more chances than their bigger, physically stronger rivals. It was clear from the start that this would be a tight affair and whilst Anstey snuffed out most of the threats coming from Oadby by defending in numbers, the defensive pairing of Kiran and Chiara not only held firm but showed good positioning and judgement to intercept most of what came their way. With goalkeeper V supporting her team with loud and clear instructions, it soon became apparent that Anstey would have to be at their best in order to create a breakthrough. The main threat for Owls was coming from Simi, who twice in as many minutes came close to putting her side ahead. After putting a good chance wide, she then came close to connecting with a great cross from Laura but just failed to make the contact that would have surely sent the ball into the net. At this stage Owls were making most of the running with Laura making several incisive runs down the right and Simi always looking lively and dangerous. Some great corners from Ellie saw further opportunities created, with a new tactic being deployed where Owls attackers came late into the box creating uncertainty for the Anstey defenders. From one such episode Eva shot just over the bar. Shortly after, Anstey created a rare chance but their attack found V in outstanding form and Chiara alert enough to clear the loose ball. As the first-half drew to a close more chances came Owls way; firstly when Neve ghosted into the area and after a superb first touch just couldn’t manage to complete the move and then two chances in quick succession for Simi who saw her shots go just over and wide. As the whistle came to signal the end of the half, Oadby’s players were disappointed that their skill and attacking approach had not gained them the lead they deserved. Meanwhile, from set pieces, Swifts continued to pose a threat only to be continually thwarted by a resolute Owls defence who time and time again were quick to spot and snuff out danger.

During the early stages of the second-half Neve was briefly withdrawn when she took a blow from the ball hitting her full-on in the face. It was not long before Simi was again causing havoc, using all her trickery and guile to fashion another chance which the Swifts goalkeeper saved down low. Soon after she denied Simi again and showed a great sporting touch when she corrected the referee’s decision and advised him to award a corner to Owls instead of the goal-kick he originally signalled for. Anstey still carried a threat and almost took the lead when a long ball caught the Owls defence out, only for Chiara to rescue Owls and put the ball out in the timeliest of fashion. Yet more chances came Owls way with Simi and Ruth only just failing to break the deadlock, aided and abetted by some great midfield contributions from Ellie and Eva. However time and again they found the Anstey goalkeeper in inspired form. At the other end Chiara and Kiran continued to deal with everything Swifts could throw at them; not only that but as the game went on they increasingly were confident enough to bring the ball over the half-way line and draw the Anstey defence out of their comfort zone. Just as the game seemed certain to go into extra-time, Owls made the breakthrough. Unsurprisingly it came from Simi who had been a constant thorn in the Swift’s side all morning, finally beating the keeper from the edge of the box. The relief amongst the Oadby contingent of the crowd was palpable as Simi got her just rewards. Over the next five minutes Oadby looked the more likely to extend their lead as they drove forward- Simi and Eva going close, with Ruth and Miya providing some intelligent support and link-up play. However whilst it remained 1-0, Anstey were always in with a shout and they nearly grabbed a late, late equaliser but for a match-saving, last-ditch sliding tackle from Kiran who appeared on cue to save what seemed to be an almost certain goal. At the final whistle, Oadby were jubilant at reaching the County Cup Final and now looking forward to the second half of the season and progressing in the league.

East Goscote Vs Oadby Owls Under 12 Girls

14 December 2014 14:30

Half Time Score 0 - 0

League

Oadby started the game well with lots of pressure early on in the first half. Weather conditions made it a difficult game for both sides with a bitterly cold wind and wet pitch making it challenging to pass the ball.

Several attempts on goal by Oadby saw the ball pass just wide of the post and this seemed to spur on East Goscote with end to end football during most of the first half. Oadby continued to pass the ball well amongst themselves despite the horrible weather creating more opportunities on goal but still couldn't quite break the deadlock. Solid defending by home team resulted in nil - nil at half time despite all of Laura’s persistent runs and shots on goal. Oadby were definitely the stronger team in the first half and were very unlucky not be ahead.

The second half started with more end to end football and very much against the run play a good strike by East Goscote found a gap in the defence and with Victoria unsighted Oadby found themselves one nil down. Oadby continued to battle away but were starting to look a little tired. Our stronger opponents found them two nil ahead, then 3 nil. Eva scored a consolation goal for Oadby in the last few minutes which resulted in a final score line of 3-1. A disappointing result for Oadby in a game where we just didn't take our chances, especially in the first half. East Goscote seemed to recognise this and started the second half with more determination and a renewed energy which was reflected in the final score line. We played some great football and passed the ball well today but need to convert our chances into goals to win games.

Oadby Owls U12 girls met the Loughborough Foxes on Sunday in a game that displayed some great football and excellent competitive spirit. Oadby Owls started their line up with Victoria in goal, Chiara and Katie in defence, Eva, Laura and Simi in midfield and Neve up-front.

The game opened at a quick pace. Oadby Owls persistently attacked the goal with their efforts producing three powerful strikes from Laura, Simi and Neve during the first five minutes of the game. Unfortunately, for the Owls, none hit the target. The Foxes responded well to the early pressure and ten minutes into the game had a shot at goal that went wide of the left post. A second strike narrowly missed the right hand post. Eva made a brilliant run from past the half way line and concluded it with an excellent attempt at goal. Both Foxes and Oadby Owls goalies were being put to the test! Just before the half time whistle, Ellie substituted for Laura in mid-field. A firm strike from Neve hit a defenders head, successfully deflecting the shot. The subsequent corner ball finely struck by Ellie, failed to connect with an Oadby Owls player in front of the post. Half time score, 0-0.

The second half commenced with a strong attack from the Foxes. A superb cross, connected with the boot of an attacker directly in front of the post. Once again, Victoria had her goal keeping skills tested. Katie and Chiara proved to be solid in their defence and consistently won tackles, closing down the Foxes advances. In midfield, Simi and Ellie showed some fine football. A shot from Simi over the cross bar and a left footed strike from Ellie marginally missing the left hand post, put the Foxes under pressure. A substitution brought Mya on in defence with Katie taking the bench. Immediately, the Foxes pushed towards the goal with Chiara undertaking an excellent sliding tackle to prevent the shot at goal. The Owls were giving it their all! The subsequent corner ball was cleared by Neve and Simi took the opportunity to make a quick run at goal, but the shot went wide of the left post. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Ruth was substituted for Neve. The Foxes made a further attack on goal. This time, despite the Owls valiant attempts at defending, the Foxes powerful strike was successful – 1-0 the Foxes. But the Oadby Owls did not give up. Whilst there were only a few minutes remaining, the two teams persistently battled with Simi making one final strike at the goal in the last minute of the game, marginally missing the right hand corner. Final whistle, 1-0 to the Foxes. It was a morning of excellent football with both teams evenly matched. There were many fine attacks and shots at goal, some great defending and confident goal keeping. Well played to both teams!

It was a very wet morning in Market Harborough and a lot of credit must go to the Harborough Town team for keeping their pitch in such a good condition to enable the fixture to go ahead. The game started with both teams battling against the conditions. Despite some good early possession from the Harborough team the Owls defensive due of Katie & Mya stood firm. Before long the Owls managed to get their passing game together and in the 7th minute Simi put a good pass to Ellie who quickly passed it to Eva who scored a good goal to take the Owls into an early lead. This was followed up in the 12th minute with a great cross from Eva that was cleanly volleyed into the back of the net by Simi to make it 2 – 0. For a little while after, Harborough came back into the game and sured up their defence. However as the 20th minute approached, Laura set off on a great run down the right hand side of the pitch before laying off a great pass to Ellie who calmly slotted it away to make it 3-0 to the Owls. A good first half for the Owls despite some good play from Harborough Town.

The 2nd half started with yet more rain, however all the girls were raring to go. The team rotated positions so that Simi & Eva were in defence, Ellie, Chiara & Katie in Midfield and Ruth up front. Despite the change in formation, the Owls looked very comfortable playing this way and happily passed the ball to each other without giving it away. It wasn’t long before an attacking move from the Owls drew a defensive clearance from Harborough only for the ball to fall to Chiara who struck the ball sweetly with her left foot to score another goal. Not long after, a similar clearance from Harborough fell to Katie who hit it firmly with her right foot for a good goal from distance. In the 20th minute, Eva latched onto a goal kick from Harborough. She brought the ball down well and pushed it forward sufficiently for her to hit it with great force for a magic goal. The Owls had definitely put on their shooting boots today! As the game progressed, Owls continued to press forward. A good passing move that involved Mya Ruth & Katie resulted in a goal mouth scramble, with the ball eventually falling to Simi for her to calmly put the ball away. The game ended with the Owls being the victors; however it was a lot closer game than the score indicated.

It was a very cold foggy morning in Cosby but both teams very ready for an exciting game of football. The game started with both teams determined to put on a great performance. For the first fifteen minutes Oadby were dominating possession but Cosby were resilient in defence. Simi and Eva exchanged passes resulting in a shot from Eva which went over the crossbar. Chiara was commanding in defence together with Mya. Chiara showed great grit and determination and played through an injury that would have seen most players come off. There were good runs from both wide players, Laura and Ellie, both putting telling crosses into the box. The pressure eventually paid dividends when a cross into the box was diverted into Cosby’s goal by one of their own defenders. Substitutions were the pattern of the day with a strong Oadby squad all keen to play and make an impact. Ruth was now playing up front, the move of the day showed the girls have been paying attention in training because a move which involved Mya passing to Chiara who in turn passed to Eva who passed to Ruth who calmly passed the ball into the net. What a great team goal! Cosby were fighting back and from a corner the ball was bouncing around in Oadby’s penalty box and it fell to a Cosby player who managed to get a clean strike on goal, with Victoria partially unsighted in goal, it was in the back of the net.

The second half showed Kiran putting in some crunching tackles in midfield. Mya now playing midfield, with Ellie up front, exchanged some good passes leading to a great goal from Chiara. Oadby were now dominating with the quality of their squad allowing fresh legs to come on and make a telling contribution. Simi scored another goal and made it look so easy, as per usual no great celebration. Oadby were finishing very strongly and it led to a powerful run from Eva which finished with a strong strike on goal, the keeper could not keep it out. Final score 5 – 1 to Oadby. Very strong performance from Oadby without them being at their best but some good quality football was played and a deserved victory.

A bright, crisp morning greeted the teams as they lined up at Coombe Park.

In a scrappy first half, the Owls dominated possession and created a host of chances in the early minutes with Laura showing some good runs. Owls finally made the break-through when Eva broke the deadlock in the 13th minute, assisted by Simi. Prior to the break the Blues applied some pressure and created some chances, however these were dealt with by the Owls defence, when Katie cleared a goal-mouth scramble and V showed a safe pair of hands to deny the increasingly threatening Blaby & Whetstone side. Both Mya and Ellie proved too strong and the danger passed.

After defending a couple of corners by the visitors early in the second half, it wasn’t long before Owls were back on the front foot with Chiara demonstrating her usual work rate breaking up the play and providing a platform for her side to attack. Player of the Match Kiran nearly doubled their lead, but for a fine save by the Blues keeper. Within a couple of minutes Kiran finally got her just reward with a good finish, this time Eva turning provider. More Owls pressure and chances followed and a combination of Eva and Simi resulted in the latter adding to her impressive tally for the season in the 12th minute of the second half. Eva soon made it 4-0 with a top corner finish from the edge of the area. Within a minute the Eva/ Simi combination proved decisive again with Simi securing a brace with an assured finish. At this point Owls were now showing a much better quality of football and playing at the fine level they have reached at times this season. As the game drew to a close, Katie popped up to make it 6-0, capping off a fine performance by the home side.

Some good early pressure from the Owls with shots from Laura and Chiara resulted in goals from Eva in 5th and 6th minute. Followed by a good save by Barwell keeper to deny Simi. A number of good corners from Ellie put Barwell under pressure and in the 13th minute Simi and Eva came off, with Katie and Ruth coming on to replace them. Well taken goal by Chiara after 19 minutes. Some well taken corners from Chiara results in a goal by Ellie in 20th minute, 4-0. Katie scores in 21st minute to make it 5-0 at half time.

Some changes at half time so that Simi & Eva come on to replace Laura and Chiara. In the 36th minute the Barwell keeper makes a poor goal kick straight to Ruth who stuck it firmly into the back of the net. Continued pressure in the second half results in a super shot by Ellie which goes just over the bar. Barwell just can't get out of their half and Ruth scores her 2nd goal after 35 minutes. Substitutes Chiara and Laura come on to replace Ellie and Mya in the 43 minute. To close out the game, Laura makes a good run from midfield to score and make it 8-0. Well played Oadby Owls, Ellie was player of the day, well played Ellie!

Oadby & Wigston AFC Vs Oadby Owls Under 12 Girls

This was a back to back fixture and after the previous weeks away success we wanted to continue our winning form. This was always going to be a tough game but some hard work in training and greater strength in attack should help this season.

The game started at a fast pace and immediately Oadby found themselves under constant pressure by a much more physical and dominant team on the pitch. After own a few minutes Oadby found themselves one nil down after an unlucky own goal from a corner. The girls responded positively to this set back and showed that they were more than an equal in terms of football skill with a number a great efforts on goal that were either saved by the keeper, went just wide or won a corner. At half time Oadby were still one nil down which didn’t really reflect the work rate and effort that Oadby were putting in. We played so much better and should have been at least level at half time and had so many positives to take into the 2nd half.

The start of the 2nd half was very lively and Oadby continued to push forward but the physical dominance of the opposition was just too much for Oadby. Despite creating a number of chances early in the second half Oadby found themselves two nil down after a goal line scramble failed to clear the ball properly. Oadby carried on fighting hard and really should have taken their chances. The game continued at two nil right up until the last 10 minutes of the second half when Oadby scored a well-deserved goal to give them at least a glimmer of hope. The response however was another strong attack and Oadby conceded a third goal in the dying minutes of the game to end the game three - one down. This was much improved result over last year’s performance and there is lots and lots of positive stuff to take away from the game. A three - one defeat against a much stronger physical team was a great result. Well done Oadby and the girls should push on from here with confidence.

Asfordby Amateurs Girls Clawson Vs Oadby Owls Under 12 Girls

The U12s travelled on a beautiful sunny morning to Long Clawson to play their second match of the season against Asfordby Amateurs Girls Clawson. The opening 7 included Chiara wearing the Captain’s armband, Maya, Ellie, Laura, Eva, Simi and Victoria with Kiran and Katie as starting subs. Sadly, Ruth missed the game due to injury.

After a dynamic start to the season last week, the Owls were a little slow to find their rhythm, maybe hindered by the longer grass which naturally slowed the ball or maybe by the excited, runaway spaniel who’s intermittent visits to the pitch proved challenging during the first ten minutes of the game. As Oadby slowly found their stride, Simi awoke Asfordby’s defenders with an energetic run from the half way line with the resultant shot going slightly wide of the right post. An excellent corner from Ellie placed the ball at Eva’s feet with another shot marginally missing the target. A counter attack by Asfordby saw some excellent defending by Chiara and Maya. Oadby persisted in their attacks at goal with some fine runs by Eva, Laura and Simi but Asfordby were solid in their defence and a further shot by Simi was saved accurately by the goalkeeper. Victoria’s goal keeping skills were put to the test with two great strikes from Asfordby. 20 minutes played and the score remained 0-0. With the spaniel now taken home in disgrace by his owner and the referee fully in control of the human players on the pitch, Chiara and Ellie were replaced by Kiran and Katie. A great cross by Laura from the right wing and a firm shot from Simi resulted in the first goal of the match. Finally, the Owls were ahead! Just two minutes later, another cross from Laura was mishandled by the goalie – a home goal put the Owls at 2-0. Asfordby did not give up. Within minutes, a breakaway from the half way line proved too quick for the Oadby defence and a strong shot at goal saw Asfordby claim their first goal of the match. 2-1. Whilst Asfordby continued to defend well, the Owls had finally found their momentum. With some fine team work, passing and impressive corner kicks from Ellie, Oadby had some accurate shots at goal – Laura’s being saved by the goalie and Eva’s hitting the cross bar. Simi’s dribbling skills and some great feeding from Kiran and Katie and the midfield, allowed Simi to claim 4 more goals before the half time whistle.

The second half saw Simi and Eva sub and Ellie and Katie defend. Chiara moved up to mid field and had an early shot at goal, saved by the keeper. Asfordby started off with renewed energy and had an early break, which required Chiara to use all her speed to defend. Shots from Laura and Kiran were well saved by the Asfordby goalie. 15 minutes in, Simi and Eva replaced Laura and Maya, Chiara moved up to forward and after a lovely pass from Eva, Chiara’s shot found the back of the net – celebrated by two of her customary Arab springs! Shortly after the restart of play, a carefully placed pass and confusion in the Asfordby defence allowed Simi to claim another goal. 8-1. The players did not appear fatigued by the unusually warm weather and the game was successfully closed out by two impressive and well deserved goals by Eva. 10-1. A truly entertaining match to watch with all players working hard and deserving the excellent result. Well done girls! Player of the day to new-comer Katie who was solid in defence. Welcome to the team!

Oadby Owls Under 12 Girls Vs Groby Junior Ladies

Another bright and sunny day greeted the under 12 girls for their first game of the 2014/15 season. Once again their first opponents were Groby Juniors, however this time it was a home fixture. With Katie away seeking European Karate glory and Ruth unable to play due to a foot injury, Oadby had just one sub for this game. So the starting line up was V in goal, Chiara & Mya in defence, Ellie, Eva and Laura in midfield and Simi in attack. The game started with some good football from both sides, with Groby just edging the early exchanges. However this all changed in the 4th minute when Ellie made a long throw to Simi, who controlled the ball well and made a good shot to score the opening goal. After that Oadby really got into gear with some excellent passing football and started to dominate possession and put Groby under pressure. The constant pressure finally paid off in the 15th minute when Oadby won a corner. Ellie took a low in-swinging corner that Eva met with an outside flick from her right foot, which beat the keeper with ease. 2-0 Oadby! Another piece of neat play saw Chiara steal the ball of a Groby player following a Groby goal kick. From mid-way in Oadby’s half, she made a neat flick to Simi, who raced forward and made a shot that narrowly went over the Groby crossbar. From then on Oadby controlled the game to go in 2-0 up at the end of the first half.

The second half started just as the first had ended, with Oadby making some fantastic passing moves, sweeping up the field with ease. Any Groby attacks were easily dealt with by Mya & Ellie in defence using many of the skills they have learnt in training. In the 10th minute, Oadby made a great move when they broke out of defence with real pace, with Simi running up the left side of the pitch and making a clean pass to Eva, who struck it firmly only to be denied by the goalpost. Fortunately Kiran had anticipated this and was in the right place to make another good shot forcing a brilliant save from the goalkeeper. The floodgates opened in the 15th minute when Chiara made a great pass to Simi, who made clean shot that was stopped by the keeper; however the ball came back out to Kiran who was once again in the right place to smash the ball into the back of the net. 3-0 Oadby! From then on Oadby went into overdrive with their passing game, which resulted in a series of goals from Simi, Eva, Kiran, Mya & Chiara. Intermingled with the goal scoring frenzy were some excellent pieces of play from all the team. One such move involved Laura making a tackle in defence then dribbling past 2 players before making a great pass to Eva, who took a shot that came back off the defender to Kiran who struck the ball with real venom only to be denied by another great save by the Groby goal keeper. An excellent performance from all the girls, probably their best to date! Any attacks that Groby made throughout the game were easily dealt by the defence. Any shots from Groby were saved by V, who had a great game in goal, with lots of great goal kicks to set Oadby on their way. Brilliant passing football throughout the team meant Oadby dominated the game and fully deserved the win. Well done girls, superb stuff!!!
