County Cup Final

Oadby Crowned County Cup Winners!

This was Oadby’s fourth match against this opposition this year and all of the previous matches had been very close affairs. With the match being so close to Easter a number of the Owls players were away on holiday and with a depleted squad of just 12 the girls were feeling like they might be the underdogs for this clash. But this was the County Cup Final and every one of our players was going to give it their all and this became apparent as soon as the game started with both teams battling hard for possession.

As the first half progressed Leicester Ladies had more of the possession, and their midfield player Tiarna, who was dropping deep to get onto the ball, was starting to have an influence on the game. But the Oadby defence and midfield were holding Leicester at bay and the Owls were looking dangerous on the break and Holly Moore was causing the Leicester defence a number of problems with her jinking runs. The Owls were starting to see more of the possession as the half progressed and a though ball found Oadby’s centre forward Lizzie Stocks and her shot from the edge of the box crashed against the crossbar. Leicester were still the team that was seeing more of the ball and this resulted in a string of corners which the Owls defence were doing well to clear. From one of these corners Leicester’s Lauren Garner found some space and her header looped over the bar.

Leicester’s pressure was bringing the best out of the Oadby keeper Chalotte “Charlie” Chamberlain who was determined to keep a clean sheet. As the half drew to a close and added on time was over the Oadby management were thinking they would be happy for the half to end goal less. Just as the referee looked as though he was going to blow to end the half Leicester earned themselves a corner. From this corner the ball fell to Leicester’s Olivia Docherty who blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

Oadby emerged early for the second half and from the start they looked determined to make amends for the late setback in the first half. The balance of possession was changing. Now it was the Owls midfield trio of Molly, Emily and Cassandra who were starting to stamp their authority on the game. Holly and Sarah were taking the ball down the touch lines and trying to find their centre forward Lizzie who was being closely guarded by two Leicester defenders. But Leicester were still dangerous and the Oadby keeper Charlie still had to be at her best to deal with numerous crosses and though balls from Leicester. Full backs Lucy and Takara and centre back Ruby now had the better of the Leicester attack and this was helping the Owls midfield create openings for their forwards. Oadby were looking more threatening now and with 20 minutes to go a through ball from Molly found Lizzie who turned and got beyond two defenders and drove a low shot in to the corner of the net. Players from both sides were tiring now and Oadby brought on their sub Emma to rest some of those aching legs. As full time approached the game became more tense but neither team were able to create another goal scoring opportunity and the match ended all square.

The Owls were tired now but 20 minutes of Extra Time lay ahead and as the match restarted Oadby were not going to let those tired legs stop them working hard. Holly was still full of running and was causing the Leicester defence many problems. Lizzie was seeing more of the ball now and her goal seemed to have given her a renewed confidence and 10 minutes into the half Holly passed the ball to Lizzie who turned the Leicester defenders inside out and curled the ball passed the Leicester’s keeper into the back of the net. Going behind sparked Leicester back into life and Natasha was having to battle hard to keep the Leicester wide players from getting past her. Oadby’s centre back Ruby was having to go across to deal with the Leicester through balls. Eventually Leicester put a cross in and a header from their forward was goal bound but Charlie somehow managed to tip it around the post for a corner.

10 more minutes of guts and determination from the Owls would see them to victory. Could they do it ? Players from both sides were now going down with cramp but both sides were still pressing for another goal. Leicester broke away and a cross came into the Oadby box where a Leicester forward steered it high towards the goal. The ball struck the bar and came back down but Charlie was there again and pounced on to the ball. With a few minutes left on the clock Oadby pressed again and the ball was fed though to Lizzie Stocks who once again turned one way then the other and broke free of the Leicester defence and steered her shot into the net for her hat-trick. Wild celebrations broke out amongst the Owls players as they knew the cup was surely theirs.

This had been a very closely fought match, played in a wonderful spirit and all the players from both sides should be applauded for providing such an entertaining game of football.
