Welland Valley (Northampton) Tournament - 1st July 2012

Owls finish the season with a Tournament win in Northampton

Oadby brought down the curtain on their 2011/12 season with another successful day and a winners trophy at the Welland Valley Tournament in Northampton. A tremendous effort from the whole squad who went through the whole day unbeaten without conceding a goal. In a tightly contested final against local Leicester rivals Beaumont Town 2004 which finished goalless, it was the Owls who lifted the trophy after winning a penalty shoot-out.

The Tournament was set up as one group of eight teams all playing each other in 10 minute matches in a round-robin format, with the top for teams qualifying for the semi-finals. Oadby topped the group with four 1-0 wins against Parkland Tigers, Brixworth Juniors, Falcons FC & Welland Valley, and three 0-0 draws against Weekley Rovers, Emberton Athletic & Beaumont Town 2004.

The knockout matches were 15 minutes in duration and a comfortable 2-0 semi-final win for the Owls over Emberton Athletic set up an eagerly anticipated Oadby v Beaumont final.

In the final both teams tried their best to win the match outright but the stalemate could not be broken, so it was down to penalties to decide the winner. It was Oadby who triumphed as Sam, Euan, Kuda, Sergio & Harvey made no mistake with all five of the Owls penalties. Beaumont had missed the target with their second spot kick so they could no longer catch Oadby after their fourth penalty and the shoot-out finished 5-3 in favour of the Owls. An unfortunate way for Beaumont to lose out as they also had gone through the whole day without defeat and not conceding a goal as well.

Well played Oadby, a great way to finish the season. Roll on August for the start of the 2012/13 campaign!

Phoenix United (Birmingham) Tournament - 17th June 2012

Owls beaten in Final of Tournament in Birmingham

Oadby travelled to Birmingham for the Phoenix United tournament on a cloudy and changeable June Sunday. The Owls welcomed two debutants to the squad for the day, Josh Hallam in goal and striker Lewis ‘Alfie’ Halford.

Oadby made their customary slow start to the day with a 0-0 draw in their first group game against Lichfield City. This was followed by a 1-0 win against Stockingford Cougars with a goal from Alfie. A goal from Josh A and two more from Alfie saw Oadby to a comfortable 3-0 win over Brereton Social in the final group game, which was enough to see the Owls top their group.

Oadby now faced tougher opposition in Hednesford Town in the quarter-final but an early goal from James secured a 1-0 win. The semi-final saw the Owls up against Holy Name and another early goal from Sam was enough for a 1-0 victory to put Oadby into the final.

Despite dominating the final against a good Wednesfield side from Wolverhampton, the Owls could not find the breakthrough that their play deserved. The game looked to be heading for extra time but in the last minute of normal time a long range dipping shot from Wednesfield struck the inside of the Oadby post and a Wednesfield striker was on hand to net the rebound from close range for the winner.

Always disappointing to lose a final but plenty of positives to take from the day. Only one goal conceded all day. A strong back five of Josh H, Christian, Bradie, Carter & Harvey, a creative and energetic midfield of Alex, Josh A, Sam, Sergio & Rhys and a dangerous strikeforce of James, Jordan, Kuda & Alfie.

Woolton Juniors (Liverpool) Tournament - 3rd/4th June 2012

Oadby finish 3rd in two day Merseyside Tournament

The Owls traveled north to Liverpool to compete in the Oliver King Trophy on the Sunday and Monday of the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend.

Oadby entered the tournament in confident mood after their recent success at Wisbech St Mary. However, the teams in this tournament proved to be much tougher opposition.

The Owls got off to a good start with a hard fought 1-0 win over tournament hosts Woolton Diamonds, the first half goal being scored by Harrison.

The second match was a bit of an eye opener as Oadby lost 1-0 to a good but very physical Naylorsfield team. Owls influtential midfielder Sergio was lost to an early injury after a late tackle which saw a straight red card issued to the Naylorsfield player. Unfortunately Sergio was unable to play any further part in the tournament because of the injury.

Oadby needed a win in their third and last Sunday group game against Woolton Gold to progress into the 2nd phase of the main trophy on the Monday. Trailing 1-0 at the interval, some stern half time words from the Manager helped the boys to overturn the deficit with three second half goals (Euan 2 & Niam) earning the Owls a 3-2 win which was enough to see Oadby top their phase 1 group.

The second day did not start well for the Owls as they lost their first two phase 2 group games which ended any chance of winning the tournament. The first match was a 3-1 defeat to Vauxhall Motors despite Oadby taking an early lead with a goal from James.

Next up were Naylorsfield who had beaten the Owls 1-0 in a close encounter the previous day. This time it wasn't so close as Naylorsfield ran out comfortable 3-0 winners which meant they would play Vauxhall Motors in the final.

The third and final Monday game for Oadby against Naylorsfield Falcons was to decide 3rd & 4th place. The Owls were playing for pride and they finished with a 4-0 win with goals from Josh, Euan, James & Kuda. Unfortunately the referee blew up early for full time after a Falcons player was penalised for an unnecessary late and high challenge from behind which ended the match and tournament on a rather sour note for Oadby.

Despite the disappointment of not making the final, the 3rd place finish was a respectable return for the teams efforts over the the two days. A good weekend was had by all with an enjoyable evening meal out together on the Sunday night.

Oadby Owls 1 Highfield Rangers 2 - 28th May 2012 (County Cup Final)

Gallant Owls unable to make it a League and Cup double

Monday 28th May – Kick Off 7pm – Time for the final match of a super successful season – The County Cup Final vs Highfield Rangers at Holmes Park. Postponed previously due to wet weather,  the contrast couldn’t have been more pronounced as the boys were warmed up by Danny Gill in beautiful sunshine. ‘The’ Owls have had a phenomenal season – Would the boys cap it all following their recent tournament win at Wisbeach St Mary? Read on to find out how they fared..........

Selections made, the boys lined up :- Safe Hands Hadley in Goal, Defence, Harvey, Harrison, Bradie and Christian. Across the Middle, Sergio ,Rhys, Niam and Sam. Up Front  JP and Euan.

Starting brightly, within 3 mins Sergio split the Highfields defence for Sam to run into the box and fire a shot just inches wide – Looking GOOD boys!

Back to the action with Oadby on top – Sergio wins the ball and plays in Euan but their keeper clears – well played Christian, nice clipped ball onto JP - throw in – Highfields attack but the impressive Bradie snuffs out the threat. Highfields play across the pitch, Euan breaks it up – Good challenges from Niam and Rhys – Sam plays a lovely ball for Euan but too strong – JP then shows excellent close control to continue the attack up the flank.

Rhys and Harvey get in on the act with an exchange of passes into Segio who gets a shot away – just wide. Great ball Harvey into Euan. And again! Strong defensive header Harrison – Bradie and Harrison are in control at the back and at the moment it is ALL Oadby as the boys press forwards. Rhys into Sergio another effort goes wide. Highfields attack but Safe Hands collects. Harry challenges – Corner to Highfields which we defend.

Free kick to Oadby for a challenge on Rhys- Harvey takes it long but Highfields clear – Hadley kicks clear, Euan chases out for a throw in.  Harry takes a stiff challenge on half way and from the resulting free kick the Highfields keeper collects the ball and launches a kick that goes so high the ball comes down with snow on it! Harvey and Bradie work together to thwart a Highfields attack down the left. Back at us but dealt with comfortably by our defence again – Sergio releases the ball but too strong for the willing forwards to convert.

Sam/Christian/JP combine but Highfields attack again – Dealt with as Hadley watches the ball go wide. And then against the run of play Highfields attack down the middle and Hadley is exposed but pulls off a FANTASTIC save on the edge of his box (at least that’s what we thought) Bradie was first to the loose ball in the six yard box but his clearance ricocheted off the Highfields striker and bounced agonisingly into the unguarded net.  The crowd that matter can’t believe it - 0-1 down

The boys are not deterred and showing magnificent zest for the contest, continue attacking and dominating possession – We just need to convert our chances – Sam jinks into the box but can’t get a shot away. Sub – Niam, who is limping after an interesting challenge, is replaced in the middle by Jordie. Rhys plays in Euan but he’s caught offside. Sam dinks a ball to JP but too long.

Harvey/Rhys/Euan who turns across the ball nicely and plays in Jordie. JP crosses Highfields keeper collects and launches another BIG kick – wondering what has happened to the passing and movement we expected from our opponents. Sergio quick feet, crosses to Sam – Corner – Jordie tackles well – He’s all over the place (in a good way!) and showing good form. More attacking down the left - Harvey combines with Rhys but too strong for JP. Corner to Highfields Hadley collects. Sub Ashman on for Sam. Nice attack Jordie/Sergio/Harvey/JP cross into the box and Euan attempts a diving header on target but the ball was just behind him and the Highfields keeper saves – Would’ve been a contender for Goal of the season if it had gone in – Cracking football lads!

More great defensive work from Bradie who refuses to be intimidated by the physical presence of the Highfields forwards. Collective defence and strong attacking – ALL elements of our team are performing well we just need to convert and then Half Time arrives – time to catch our breath.

Half time: Oadby Owls 0 Highfield Rangers 1

The 2nd half gets underway with a tactical switch to 3 at the back – Christian and Sergio off, Nimo and Sam back on and Highfields are on the attack immediately but wide. Time to defend boys with Harvey and Rhys tracking back. Corner to Highfields – Dealt with. Jordie knocks a cross field ball to Euan onto Rhys back to Jordie who gets a shot away but the Highfields keeper collects.  Quick attack by Highfields – Hadley collects and distributes down the left – Rhys gets on the move and after some great work finds JP in the box – He controls the ball and as time stands still he makes a couple of shoulder dips and body swerves,  and FINISHES to equalise 1-1 GAME ON!

Niam attacks and wins a corner – Jordie/JP into Rhys corner again which leads to an Ashman volley – wide. Rhys on the move again – More PRESSURE from Oadby – Rhys chips just wide. Niam nice ball into Sergio – Strong challenge on Sergio who wins a free kick. Bit scrappy as Rhys avoids a major head injury. Harvey combines with Rhys as we continue pressing – The game is open but we’re looking the more likely to score. The ball breaks free and Harvey and a Highfields player collide resulting in Harvey being carried off so I’m afraid I missed a little bit of action as Reporting duties gave way to other concerns!

Anyway, managed to get the boy sorted (thanks Danny and Rob) and so back to the matter at hand – Sam breaks free and threads the ball forward but too long – We’re still PRESSING – Ashman gets in on the action Well Done Mr! Niam onto JP who flicks the ball on and another effort goes wide. Time for Highfields to make a substitution – Number 21 off what will Bradie do now?

Well played Sergio/Christian who is fouled. Nimo breaks up another attack. Jordie across the park again. Hadley collects the ball and distributes to Christian who clips a nice ball into JP – Bit of work to do with 2 defenders on him but he gets a shot away saved by the HIghfields keeper.

Alex is on now (must’ve missed that Sub!) and he pins his ears back and races down the right handside – Great pace and he wins a corner – Back at us – Highfield win a corner Hadley collects. More good attacking play from Alex into Segio who gets a shot away – Extra Time is beckoning.

Highfields attack down the flank and out of nothing their winger manages to squeeze the ball under Hadley to take a rather undeserved lead 2-1 – Feels like we’re been mugged!

Sub – Euan on – 2 at the back and we PUSH for another equaliser – Ashman volleys CLOSE but over the bar. More attacking crossfield from Alex but time is against us and the final whistle blows – A good contest which we should’ve won – We were without a doubt the better team with the greatest attacking desire and a Defence and Midfield in control – The result remains BUT Oadby Owls showed they have developed into a very good side – Well played boys – This Reporter believes you deserved a victory and I’ve watched a few games this season!

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Christian Farrar, Bradie Perkins, Harrison Norton, Harvey Judd, Sam Grouse, Niam Morar, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Euan Ford, James Parker, Josh Ashman, Jordie Burke, Alex Hobart, Josh Hurst, Carter Gill, Mason Smith

Congratulations to the boys and Management Team as the curtain falls on the 2011/2012 Season.

Player of the Day: The whole team - very unfortunate not to win but a thoroughly entertaining game full of passion, commitment, endeavor and skill.

Wisbech St Mary Tournament - 20th May 2012

Owls travel to Wisbech and return with the Tournament Winners Trophy

Oadby came away triumphant from a well organised Wisbech St Mary tournament on a typically cold May Sunday!

Despite a slow start and some below par performances at the beginning of the tournament the Owls quality and winning mentality shone through in the end. In the group games Oadby did not show their best form and missed a lot of chances but finished the group unbeaten drawing three and winning two matches to progress to the quarter finals as one of the two best third place finishers.

In the knockout games the Owls gradually started to up their game. A late winner in the quarter final against Reffley was enough for a 1-0 win. In the semi final Wilby were put to the sword with a 3-0 victory to put Oadby through to the final. The result of the final never looked in doubt as the Owls eased to a 2-0 win over Woodbridge Town.

Quorn Juniors 2006 0 Oadby Owls 2 - 22nd April 2012 (League)

Oadby secure Division 1 Title with win at Quorn in final League match of season

Oadby Owls under 14's regained the League title for the first time since 2009 with a win at Quorn Juniors 2006. The 2-0 victory was enough to clinch the Leicester & District Sunday Juniors League Championship, finishing two points clear of runners-up Leicester Nirvana and three points ahead of Highfield Rangers in third place and who they are to meet in the County Cup Final this forthcoming Sunday.

The Owls knew full well that only a win would be enough to secure top spot and they took the game to Quorn from the off. An early goal from Euan when he neatly headed in a near post cross from Rhys helped Oadby on their way. An Owls corner nearly produced a second goal but Harrison couldn't quite get enough contact on the ball to steer it home. Then a good long range effort from Christian had the Quorn keeper beaten but it dropped just over the bar. Any remaining Oadby nerves were settled on 20 minutes when Jordie put Alex through on the right whose shot was well saved by the keeper but Sam was on hand to double the Owls lead from close range

Half time: Quorn 2006 0 Oadby Owls 2

Despite creating plenty of good chances to increase their lead in the second half, Oadby didn’t manage to take any of the numerous opportunities they had to score. The missed chances were not to matter in the end, as throughout the match the solid Owls defence never looked like conceding a goal, even though Quorn tried hard to get back into the game. When the whistle blew for the end of the match the Owls were League Champions.

Now was the time for the whole Oadby squad to celebrate for completing their League season with a tremendous record of P18, W15, D2, L1 = 47 Pts. Full time: Quorn 2006 0 Oadby Owls 2

If everyone keeps believing and working hard there could be more success on the way, starting with the County Cup Final at Holmes Park against Highfield Rangers on Sunday 29th April.

Up the Owls!

Hinckley United 1 Oadby Owls 3 - 18th April 2012 (League)

Back to the League campaign with our penultimate match away against Hinckley United. We need 2 wins to secure the title and we are in control of our own destiny. After an appalling days weather, bright evening sun shone through the clouds as we squelched onto the supporters sideline – The pitch looked in great nick in spite of the down pours.

Oadby welcomed back a fit again Euan and the crowd wondered how would it be playing with a couple of recognised strikers – Novel!

Starting Line Up :- Hadley, Harvey, Harrison, Bradie, Alex, Sergio, Christian, Niam, Rhys, JP and Euan Subs :- Jordie, Sam and Carter

Kicking uphill and with Simon Hobart on the line, Oadby got the game underway. The boys re-discovered their appetite for a battle and got well and truly stuck in to the match. JP exchanges passes with Euan early on and we’re underway – Passing and moving the ball sweetly. Alex/Christian/Alex/Nimo – Nimo gets a shot away. Half Time: 0-0

Subs :- Jordie, Carter and Sam ON / Bradie, Niam and Euan OFF

Alex continues where he left off in the 1st half but this time we’re kicking down hill and his pace is worrying the Hinckley defence – all we need to do is release the ball early and convert our chances. Left hand side Sam to JP to Harvey, another burst into the box, gets his shot away low and hard ……………Ooooooh only just wide!

Jordie plays a nice ball into Sam who wins a corner. Alex takes, Hinckley defend, Alex chips the ball into the box and Harrison, rising like a salmon, nods into the bottom corner GOAL Oadby 1-0 Hurrah The crowd go WILD!

Long ball into the box for Sam to chase – Good header Jordie – JP lovely skills and strength ball up the line. The Hickley defenders are all over Rhys but we don’t get a decision. HOWEVER, I must’ve missed the next foul as Hinckley are awarded a free kick which they knock into our box and manage to convert 1-1 Hmmmm!!

15 mins to go – The boys decide it is time to step upo to the mark and go all out for the win – Rhys/Sam/JP Shot wide. Christian clips the ball to Jordie – Header wide.

Oadby Owls 1 St Andrews 2 (aet) - 15th April 2012 (League Cup Semi Final)

So we arrived in blinding sunshine to a surprisingly well organised event – Must be down to Asfordby Amateurs Football Club who should be commended for their organization and facilities – Thank-you!

As we waited in the Car Park we weren’t sure if the ground was dog friendly BUT ten before kick off we were treated to a MAGNIFICENT Poodle Show and then more Poodles kept coming and coming and coming – The car park was more like Crufts than Wembley – Good job we left our Milo at home!  – Ah well time for the main event……………..

Our starting line up :- Hadley in goal (obviously!), Back Line Harvey, Josh Hurst, Carter and Harrison; Midfield Josh Ashman, Sergio, Jordie, Rhys and Up front Sam and Niam Subs :- Christian, Rossa, Mason, Bradie, Alex

St Andrews got the game underway on a well manicured pitch and things were pretty much even for the 1st few mins until a St Andrews forward turned our left back (Pls note I can’t bring myself to name him!) inside out and shot low into the bottom corner of the net – Blimey we’re 1 down!

Plenty of time to recover though and Jordie led the way with a great challenge, winning the ball and moving to Sam who headed on – Ashman gets involved down our left – Sergio plays a cracking cross field ball to Rhys and we win a corner. Harrison gets a header in no outcome but we have weathered the storm and are now beinging to excert some control of our own – Well done boys!

We’re building pressure – Rhys battles and wins the ball, Jordie, Harry nearly through. Jordie wins a header Sergio gets in on the act – Lovely chest control Harvey Strong header Harry Free Kick edge of our box – Good defenisve header – Corner. Hadley takes comfortably – Well done.

Sergio holds the ball and plays an excellent cross field ball to Rhys – We’re getting BETTER! St Andrews attach but we deal with the threat comfortably – Josh Hurst wins the ball cleanly and moves it on Sam’s on the attack. Hadley to Carter. Harry cuts out a SA attack – Surely there was a trip on Sam but the Referee didn’t see it. Nimo wins the ball beautifully and gets fouled for his trouble – This time the Ref does give it. Another attack by SA – Game gets a little SCRAPPY.

Rhys defends a SA corner – Harry gets a good header out to Sam who plays a sublime ball for Nimo to run onto and like a seasoned No9 he draws the St Andrews keeper and finishes coolly – GOAL 1-1 We’re back in it - no less than we deserve.

Sub :- Goalscorer Nimo and Jordie off, replaced by Mason and Rossa.

Harry wins a free kick narrowly avoiding de-capitation – Sam/Sergio/Ashman – Good defending Harry Rossa and Sam combine and win a free kick – Harvey takes – Sam to Rossa to Mason Corner. Sergio gets fouled – Free Kick – Harvey takes but it’s too close to their keeper – Carter to Ashman – Hadley collects . Nice passage of inter passing Hurst/Ashman/Rhys/Harvey/Rossa –

Half Time: 1 -1

Half Time subs – Harvey off Christian on. Tactical switch to 3 at the back – Must confess to missing the start as I was thawing out in the clubhouse! Got back in time to see a St Andrews effort go wide. Excellent chasing Sam Grouse. Mo bursts into our box and shoots wide – Good anticipation Josh Hurst, moves the ball to Sam – Carter strong – Foul on Ashman Free Kick – Carter takes but the boys need to gamble on the bits and pieces. Sam, good movement into Rossa and goes for the return – Sam/Ashman Pressing well in SA half – Back at us! Well seen out by Josh Hurst.

Free Kick to us close to half way line – Carter was close enough to listen to advice and whilst initially I called it perfect we did agree to down grade the execution to WELL DONE!

Josh Hurst cleans up – Good skills Carter – we’re attacking in their box now – Then the ref decides to give Sam a talking to and he listened well – Good Lad!

Ball into Rhys, head back to Sam moves the ball to Nimo who shapes to strike and hits a lovely shot just over the bar. Rhys good challenge and move the ball forward. We’re stringing  passes together Rhys/Sam/Nimo – Sam to Rossa SHOT Goalie saves – Corner – Free Kick to SA in their box Attack at us broken down by Harrison – Hadley quick off his line.

Sergio nicks the ball away from a SA player who responds by 1st kicking Sergio then kicking the ball away – Time for a deserved Yellow Card but we would’ve preferred to play advantage!

Not long left but time for St Andrews to attack with purpose - Our boys show their character with some FANTASTIC defending. Carter / Harry calm things down – Sam breaks into the box, keeper nearly fumbles. Just about the last bit of action as the Referee blows his whistle –  20 mins Extra Time beckons!

Extra Time and we were all over them like a rash – Quite how we didn’t score still baffles me. As chance after chance goes begging we begin to prepare for a Penalty Shoot Out when all of a sudden we are 2-1 down MUGGED - AGAIN!

The boys go after an equaliser with great spirit but can’t convert the numerouse chances they create and so after a final few mins of action it’s time to go away lick our wounds and concentrate on winning the League Title – C’mon boys we can do it!

Best of luck to St Andrews in the final.

Title Still In Balance As Owls Falter Against Rivals

Oadby missed out on a golden opportunity to more or less wrap up the league title by slipping to a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Leicester Nirvana. It is still in our hands but this setback now means that the Owls need to win their last two league fixtures to ensure they finish in first place.

After constant and heavy rain all day this early evening match was in doubt and subject to a pitch inspection. Despite the conditions being far from perfect the match got the go ahead and both teams knew it's importance.

The match started with both sides competing hard to gain the upper hand in the midfield but with Nirvana having the advantage of kicking down hill the Owls were defending their goal more than they wanted to. When Oadby were on the attack they failed to take their half chances to score. Nirvana took the lead on 20 minutes when an inswinging free-kick from 30 yards out on the left was over the stretching Hadley and crept in under the crossbar. Oadby came back at Nirvana for the remainder of the first half but had no joy in front of goal.

Half time: Oadby Owls 0 Leicester Nirvana 1

Oadby started the second half looking sharper than they did in the first period. The Owls were now kicking down the slope and with Nirvana looking to hang on to what they had it was Oadby that were constantly on the attack. Nirvana were happy to sit deep and occasionally hit the Owls on the break. Oadby created numerous opportunities but lacked the little bit of quality needed in the final third of the pitch. There were several chances created to level the score but unfortunateley they were squandered. With time and the light running out the Owls could not find a way through the resolute Nirvana defence to score the equalising goal they needed.

Oxford City 1 Oadby Owls 5 - 31st March 2012 (MJPL)

Oadby completed their MJPL fixtures for the season with a 5-1 win away to Oxford City in a supplementary game following their cup quarter final exit on the previous Saturday. Oxford made a nice gesture by welcoming the Owls onto the pitch with a guard of honour as recognition for Oadby finishing top of the MJPL U14 division with a record of P 18, W 16, D 1, L 1, Pts 49 during the regular competitive season.

It was Oxford who started the game the brighter side and they took an early lead after the Owls failed to clear a ball into their box. Oadby were looking rather lethargic and struggled to get into their stride in the early stages as Oxford continued to press forward trying to extend their lead. The Owls eventually started to pick their game up and the defence was now being well marshalled by Carter in the middle of Harrison & Harvey. Oadby were now getting forward more and after one or two near misses the they got back on level terms when Sergio found Alex in space on the right and he hit a fierce shot past the Oxford keeper from just outside the area. Oadby then went ahead when Alex found James whose mishit shot fell to the unmarked Sam in the box and he finished well with his left foot from 10 yards.

Half time: Oxford City 1 Oadby Owls 2

After half time Oadby started to control the game with Niam and Owls man of the match Jordie winning the midfield battle Oadby were starting to create more chances. Hadley in the Owls goal now had little to do and the third goal came when Rossa headed in a good cross from a Harvey free-kick. It was soon 4-1 when a great Owls move involving Jordie, James, Christian and Sam set up Sergio who crashed a shot against the bar but Rhys was on hand to tuck away the rebound. The final goal was scored after 65 mins when a low cross from Niam found Christian arriving late at the far post to finish well from close range.

The first season in the MJPL has been a great experience for the Owls, playing teams of a good standard from all over the Midlands. To finish well clear at the top of the division after 18 matches was a tremendous achievement by the players & management and was enjoyable for the parents & supporters. Hopefully next season we can go one better and win the MJPL cup as well!Type report here

Oadby Owls 8 Quorn Juniors 0 - 25th March 2012 (League)

After the disappointment of their MJPL cup quarter final defeat the previous day Oadby bounced back well with a comfortable 8-0 league win over struggling Quorn Juniors. The 3 points earned from this victory were very welcome as the Owls title challenge heads into the final stretch.

Oadby started the match playing very well and were soon in the lead. A long range volley from Rhys gave the Quorn keeper no chance for the opener. Harvey then scored his first Owls goal with a right foot finish after good work from Rossa and Josh H. Mason made it 3-0 when James set the ball for him to smash home a quality strike from just outside the Quorn box. It was soon four when Harvey doubled his goals tally for this match and the season with a left footed free-kick from 45 yards which drifted over the keeper into the net. Carter completed the first half scoring with a neat glancing header from a Harvey free-kick into the box.

Half time: Oadby Owls 5 Quorn Juniors 0

During the second half Oadby somewhat lost their way and were not playing the same flowing passing football as they had at the start of the first half. Nevertheless the Owls still managed to add 3 more goals without reply. Hadley scored his first goal of the season with a well placed penalty into the bottom left corner. Jordan then made it 7-0 with a well taken goal from 12 yards. In the closing minutes Alex rounded off the scoring when he ran onto a long ball over the top on the left and cut inside to finish with a well placed shot.

Oadby Owls 0 Holy Name Celts 1 - 24th March 2012 (MJPL Quarter Final Play-Off)

Woke up to a FOGGY morning as we got set to welcome our MJPL Cup Quarter Final opponents Holy Name Celts (HNC) to Judgemeadow.

Comfortably clear at the top of the League Table, this bit of the ‘competition’ seemed somewhat more akin to Premiership Rugby playoffs but then who are we to question authority? Particularly given the League Secretary was in attendance! Anyway, better get that out of the way before I write the report ‘cos it might seem like sour grapes at the end!

Nets up in double quick time, the Dads retired to the coffee lounge for our now traditional pre match drink accompanied by our match officials – Referee Keith and ‘family Wesson’ running the line whilst the Oadby Management team prepared the boys. The Oadby Dinner Ladies once again exhibited their now legendary hospitality skills patiently serving Pre- Match Coffee, Half-Time Coffee and Post-Match Coffee (PMC /HTC /PMC) plus of course something for the boys afterwards!

Great to see so many supporters there to cheer both teams and we now have a new Cheerleader in Lexi Beakin taking a well earned rest from studying Fashion, Merchandising and Buying at Manchester Uni .

Our starting line up :- Hadley between the posts, Josh Hurst, Bradie, Harrison and Harvey defence, Rhys, Christian, Sergio, Ashman across the middle, JP and Jordan up front got the game underway.

The ball was played back to Harvey for his 1st touch but he decided to step over (ok it might’ve taken a bobble?!)  and it was time for Harrison to get in his 1st clearance of the day. The match was pretty much played out in the HNC half as Oadby pressed to gain the upper hand in a relatively evenly matched contest. Few clear cut chances were created and even fewer half chances.

Here’s some highlights :- Serge moves the ball to Jordan – throw in – Ashman closes down – Goal Kick HNC. Harry to Harvey into Sergios feet – Good collective defending – Nice touch Rhys into Serge give and go – Attack up the other side of the pitch – Ashman wins a free kick – Serge nice turn and delivery for Rhys to chase – Just offside.

Harvey plays a ball into JP – we’re looking better AND then against the run of play HNC attack straight down the middle – Their striker is clear on goal but hasn’t counted on our not so secret defensive weapon - HADLEY sprints out to the edge of his box goes one on one, makes himself BIG and makes a FANTASTIC save – Keeps us in the match!

Back to our attacking – Harry/Harvey/Harry nice exchange of passes to create some room – Harry knocks a long ball – throw in. More neat inter passing Harvey / Sergio / JP / Rhys – Josh Hurst pops up in the middle of the park moving the ball nicely – Harry / Harvey / Rhys into Christian cross field ball now we’re attacking up the right Lovely passing and movement boys.

Wide effort on goal from HNC.

More attacking up the left hand side – Harry / Harvey ball onto the ever willing Jordan for some more excellent front running. Tight offside against HNC (Shane would’ve got that one!)

Corner to Oadby – Nice take no outcome and a long clearance by HNC keeper. Good 1st header Harvey – EXCELLENT clearance from the impressive Harry who is hitting the ball clean every single time he connects. Rhys knocks on for JP to chase down HNC goalie collects. HNC go on the attack but JP tracks back and wins the ball back – EXCELLENT work!

More Oadby attacking Harvey into JP, onto Jordan who turns and gets a shot away.  Long clearance from HNC, Josh Hurst covers with a diving header – Nice!

Substitution time :- Alex and Jordie on for Josh H and Christian.

Alex on the move then crosses to switch play – no outcome. Another BIG clearance from HNC which Harry deals with – Bradie gets in on the act with a nice ball to Alex who plays a lovely ball for JP – just offside. At this point Rob gives a bit of managerial advice to Harry ‘push him back’! It’s getting physical perhaps the only way HNC think they can break us down?

Sub again :- Carter on for Bradie. We’re attacking again = JP to Serge /Ashman /Alex – Throw in to JP to Rhys who lobs the HNC goalkeeper and hits the crossbar – Ooooooooohhhh!!!

Jordie / Rhys under pressure but get the ball away – HNC attack but Rhys breaks it up with a clever back heel and sets JP off again into Jordan the ball drops to Ashman who takes aim and shoots but the effort is wide. Pretty much this brings the half to a close 0-0 Time for HTC from the Dinner Ladies.

2nd Half gets underway with a switch to 3 at the back Mason on for Josh Hurst – We’ve been strong in the 1st half and weathered all HNC can muster so let’s go and win the game boys.

Half chance for Jordan but the HNC defender nips in to clear their lines. Ball is released for Alex to motor – nearly there. Mason controls the ball on his chest and dinks a nice ball forwards. Harvey back header – Carter cleans up – Serge long ball for the willing Jordan to chase down – Well done Jordan.

Ball down the middle – Corner to Oadby – Alex takes, flick on by Jordie we can’t convert. Another lovely ball from Alex gets Jordan almost through. Harrison is strong takes the free kick offside – All the action is in the HNC half.

At this point the action on the pitchside got more frenetic than on the pitch. Sergio had been pushed to the floor by an HNC player and then whilst someone got to receive some treatment we had a mini supporters pitch invasion !. Bit too much back chat from all concerned and a few people let themselves down but a few mins after the ‘invasion’ Craig took on the role of UN Peacekeeper and after apologies we settled back into what matters – The football!

Excellent defending – Unlucky Jordan – swing that boot fella! HNC have an effort on goal but Hadley saves – Ashman is moved up front – Throw in Mason nice1st touch and lay off. Free kick to HNC back at us. Alex takes on 2 defenders but HNC no 8 defends well.

Time is running out – JP off Harrison on Up Front. Free Kick to Oadby – Harvey takes and fires a shot down the throat of the HNC keeper who doesn’t spill. Corner to HNC – cleared off the line Hadley punches away HNC effort high and wide.

Great knock Harvey to Ashman. Corner to Oadby. Alex takes it on but the ball is soon back at us.HNC long shot Hadley collects. HNC win a free kick out on our left hand side.

And then it happened........................ HNC fire the free kick into our box, flick on we don’t deal with it and the balls in the back of our net! – 1-0 HNC

Time only for a couple more attacks by our boys – fumble by the HNC keeper but we can’t convert.

Full Time whistle blows and it feels like we’ve just been mugged.

The Dinner Ladies have done a great job for the boys but the sandwiches just don’t taste the same – Let’s wish Holy Name Celts all the best for the next round and go and finish the job we have started on Sundays!

I'm off.....did you see the crossbar challenge!

Oadby Owls 2 Highfield Rangers 1 - 18th March 2012 (League)

Owls edge closer to title with win over main rivals

The Owls picked up a vital 3 points with a hard earned win against fellow league title challengers Highfield Rangers.

Oadby got off to a dream start when in only the 2nd minute a poor clearance from the Rangers keeper fell to Sergio who picked out Josh Ashman in space on the right and he didn't hesitate to hammer home an unstoppable shot from 25 yards. The early goal gave the Owls the confidence boost they needed and they were getting the better of the early exchanges in difficult conditions on a wet and slippery pitch. Both teams were fighting for every ball and no quarter was given in any area of the pitch. Oadby were pressing forward in search of a second goal and when Highfields came back at them they found themselves up against an Owls defence in defiant mood and the safe handling of Hadley in the Oadby goal.

Half time: Oadby Owls 1 Highfield Rangers 0

Rangers started the second half on the attack as they tried to get back on level terms and for a short period of time the Owls seemed to be second to the ball. But it was Oadby who scored again to double their lead when from a corner Owls man of the match Harrison won a towering header towards goal which was turned over the line by James from close range. The goal gave Oadby renewed confidence that they would go on to win the match, but Highfields had other ideas and pulled a goal back with ten minutes left with a good strike from the edge of the area which the Owls defence should really have closed down quicker. This meant that there would be a nervy last few minutes for Oadby but they managed to see out the remainder of the match for a deserved victory.

Another great win and the team is doing the club proud. We have come so far this season and the whole squad has been instrumental in getting us to where we are. The quality and depth of the whole squad will be needed over the next 6 to 8 weeks if we are to realise our ambitions of winning some silverware. Keep it up boys!

Birstall United 0 Oadby Owls 2 - 11th March 2012 (League)

An assured display on a sunny Spring afternoon at Birstall saw the Owls pick up another 3 league points as they entered the last third of their challenge for the division 1 title.

Oadby were the dominant team from the start and attacked Birstall at every opportunity. The Owls midfield were controlling the game and when Birstall did threaten they were always denied by the strong Oadby defence. Clear cut chances were few and far between for the Owls but two good left foot strikes from Sam and James midway through the first period saw them 2-0 up at the interval.

Half time: Birstall Utd 0 Oadby Owls 2

The second half continued in the same manner although Birstall tried hard to get back into the match. Oadby were still on top and Owls skipper and man of the match Sergio was in the thick of everything as he started attacks and broke up play in the middle when Birstall came forward. Oadby spurned some chances to wrap the game up as the match drew to a close but the Owls were happy to settle for a well deserved if not spectacular win.

Four Corners 3 Oadby Owls 3 - 10th March 2012 (MJPL)

Saturday arrives and a chance to put the previous weekend behind us – Unfortunately the squad were still suffering the after effects of Sundays match against GNG and so with Lemsips on board we only arrived with 14 players so everyone was going to get a run out!

1st things 1st though, the Manager was last to arrive, forgot his watch, had no pen to write with and to top it all left his abacus at home (read on to find out why that mattered) – Pretty much all of this could be attributed to Al Parker and he manfully accepted the blame – Good on him!

Yet again our Dinner Ladies excelled – OK so it was an away game and they weren’t all there but they are magnificent and deserve a mention!

Our starting line up – Josh Hurst in goal;  Back Three  Harvey / Harrison / Bradie – Midfield – Sergio / Christian / Jordie /Josh Ahsman / Rhys;  and leading the line up front James and Sam. On the bench Carter / Jordan / Niam / Running the Line – Lee Hurst

No sooner had the game started than my pen ran out of ink and Al Parker saved the day by arranging a replacement – Top Man!

Todays’ match was a SCRAPPY affair – but here’s a bit of the action :-

Four Corners started well  and had an effort over out bar but we sorted ourselves out and started attacking – Nice move up our left JP and Rhys combining well. Back at us collected by Josh Hurst. Quickly followed by a couple of ball bobbles in our box – Josh Hurst got one, Harry got the other but our goal survived intact.  Sam’s on the attack, Rhys intercepts a pass moves the ball to JP and  Ashman gets a cross in but no outcome.

Not pretty on the eye, the pitch caused a few too many bobbles, so the game continued in a scrappy vein, lacking a clinical final touch from both teams. Still it was a bit end to end with Four Corners moving the ball wide at every opportunity.

Bit more action from our boys – Sam beaks up an attack – Ashman nice back heel – JP closing down FC defence – More Midfield battling – Harry cleans up at the back, long ball for Jordie – too strong – Ashman breaks free – Sergio to Ashman cross into the box collected by the FC keeper.Nice long ball from FC collected by Josh Hurst. We’re not finding feet – through ball by FC – again Josh H collects.

Up the line on the attack, JP flicks on for Rhys to chase down we’re making progress – Sergio gets a shot away Goalie saves. Back at us again. Sergio/Harry/ Christian plays a great ball to Ashman on the edge of the box OVER - Best move of the game so far. Four Corners play a ball down the middle – Bradie keeps the pressure on their striker and Hursty comes out to narrow the angle (he’s been watching Hadley!) FC shoot wide – Feels like we’re pushing our luck!

And then out of nothing the ball drops to Sam in the 18 yard box and he finishes smartly into the bottom corner – Lovely strike 1-0 Oadby against the run of play but we’ll take it! Immediately from Kick Off Four Corners attack but Bradie defends well – Good knock Jordie for Sam to chase – Building pressure with Sam/Ashman /JP and we’re passing the ball better than before. Josh Hurst is called upon again – Well done lad!

Half Time 1-nil up and time for a parents discussion but before that our Referee for the game, Steve Edwards, clarified the offside rules for Lee Hurst – To be fair Lee was a bit early with his flagging if you were to be critical but the decision was correct – bet he flags later in the 2nd half!

Anyway, as we all agreed the 1st half was less than exhilarating Jordies mum offered to do a streak to liven things up. However, as Paul quite rightly noted the TV cameras don’t show the streaker anymore ever since Erica Roe made a million – Ah well coffee instead then! Manager Rob made his substitutions and the boys took to the field for the start of the 2nd half. Nothing unusual there EXCEPT that mathematics isn’t one of Robs’ strengths and he had forgotten his abacus. 4 off 3 on-  Steve ‘no foul’ Edwards counted the players and decided we should really have Jordie on as well to bring our numbers up to 11 Hmmmmmm Mr Farrar Club Fine under discussion!

The 2nd Half began with our boys on the attack – Jordan to Sergio who gets a shot away – saved. Ball into JP onto Niam who lets it roll thro his legs, turns and shoots wide – nice movement lad. We make progress up the left hand side. Jordie long ball to JP who chases down.FC pray the ball wide again, their No 11 is having a good game, Christian gets in on the attack moving the ball to Ashman, into Jordan no outcome.

Better attacking now Harvey linking with Nimo – Back at us – Carter takes a break from coughing like a walrus and cleans up. Lovely attack up our left side – Strong running from Nimo who crosses the ball into the box. FC defenders block their own goalie,  Josh Ashman gets a shot away cleared on the goal line but it drops to Serge who finishes smartly from 2 yards – GOAL – 2-0 Hurrah!

Four Corners move the ball again, beat our defence out wide and get a cross into the middle but Harrys there to get a foot away for a corner. Jordie heads clear but FC get a shot on goal – wide. Back at them Jordie turns brings in Nimo who crosses – ball bobbles around – corner to us. JP twinkles but can’t get a shot away and FC are on the attack – Josh Hurst races out of his area and clears – Good knock down the channel by Harvey but too strong for the willing Jordan.

Free Kick conceded on the edge of our penalty area – Substitution time and Rob is paying attention – 2 off 2 on! Jordie and Ashman off – Sam and Rhys on Niam moves into the centre. We’re under pressure from Four Corners now. Blue No 11 has a great effort over the bar. At this point Jordies’  mum has to walk around to the other side of the pitch to where he is lying on the floor. Next time we look over  Jordie is wearing a coat – Mums know best!

All of a sudden out of nothing Blues score to make it 2-1. Time to defend more stoutly bys – Josh Hurst collects.

2 mins late and FC are on the attack but are fouled – the referee plays advantage and then brings the game back for a free kick – FANTASTIC save by Josh Hurst followed by a good header by Harvey - To be fair the ball was travelling that fast he had no time to get his head out of the way!

And then another goal to FC out of nothing 2-2 Hmmmmm!

No time to watch much but then FC go 3-2 up Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!

The boys don’t deserve to be behind and at last they pull their fingers out and show some urgency – Attack down our left Harvey/Nimo/Rhys throw to Sam and a cross no outcome but we’re trying.

And then Rhys receives the ball on the edge of the Penalty box and despatches a STUNNING lob over the FC goalie  into the goal – GREAT finish to bring us level  3-3

But the drama wasn’t over as the opposition Linesman flagged for offside – Referee Steve walked over purposefully and having heard the linesmans reasoning, awarded a goal – Hip Hip Hurrah. Only a few mins to go and we press but can’t convert.

Stand out player of the day – Four Corners No 11 - Interesting result 3-3

GNG 0 Oadby Owls 11 – 4th March 2012 (League)

The previous week of warm weather confined to the memory banks, we woke to cold, driving, drizzling rain ahead of our visit to Victoria Park, the spiritual home of GNG. Still, at least it was an afternoon kick off; so maybe the footballing Gods would look kindly upon us?

No such chance!

Given the weather conditions it was no surprise that parents were missing for the warm up but just like a scene from Field of Dreams, as the delayed kick off arrived, they came! And the mums were very well represented – A few noteable absences but I guess they were at home preparing dinner? Well done ladies!

Before we started, we had a change of pitch due to the standing water – it’s bad enough putting the nets up once – imagine how we felt watching them have to be moved –If the referee hadn’t helped we’d probably still be there now.

For the 1st time this year the boys were required to present their Player Identity Cards – Always nice when the picture matches the boy and we were ready for kickoff.

Due to the driving rain my Reporters Notepad was getting wet so the Reporters Union got together and decided to adapt things – time for a different style so here goes :-

1st Half – Wind behind our backs and kicking downhill we were 3-0 up at half time. Should’ve been more.

2nd Half On occasions we managed to get the ball out from the quagmire of the centre circle and played some lovely moves into the box. Often times we gently passed the ball into the welcoming arms of the GNG goalie but other times we were more ruthless. We scored 8 without reply – Won 11-0. Could’ve been more.

Other edited highlights:

Phil Beeken sports a natty pair of yellow gloves. Looking more like an Air Traffic Controller, we were in danger of bringing in planes to land whenever he got excited OR cold!

Paul Grouse resplendent in his wet weather Golfing attire

Phil and Paul took their glasses off due to the rain, so I know they will believe whatever I write!

We knew it was cold because Danny had his socks pulled up almost touching his shorts.

Toke was heard again – No competition for deepest voice like yesterday with Holy Name Celts Voiceover Man.

Lee Hurst’s umbrella turned inside out with the wind – Thought no one noticed.

Niam scored direct from a corner

Niam scored 4

GNG number 6 had the dirtiest shirt at the end of the game – Sergio came close.

Referee had a good match

Back to the Top of The Table – Keep ‘em coming!

Home to thaw out and dry off.

Oadby Owls 1 Holy Name Celts 2 – 3rd March 2012 (MJPL)

Well it was great while it lasted but the Owls winning run finally came to an end after 16 consecutive MJPL victories. Holy Name Celts came to Judgemeadow and took the 3 points with a 2-1 win.

Oadby were slow to get started and Holy Name were on top in the early stages of the match. Just when the Owls were starting to get back into the game it was Holy Name who took the lead on 18 minutes when they got to the byline on the left side of the area and pulled the ball back for a forward to finish well from 6 yards. Oadby responded well and were back on level terms two minutes later when a shot from Sam in a crowded box was touched into the bottom left corner by Jordan. 1-1. The Owls were lifted by the equaliser and created two or three chances to take the lead before half time but none of them were taken.

Half time: Oadby Owls 1 Holy Name Celts 1

Oadby took the game to Holy Name in the second half and started to dominate. But despite the Owls creating some good opportunities Holy Name were defending well and Oadby could not manage to score the elusive second goal. Holy name were also causing Oadby problems with some counter attacks of their own. As time was running out the Owls nearly took the lead when Sam saw his header rebound off the crossbar. It looked like the match was going to end in a draw but Holy Name had other ideas and they broke out to score a late winner with an attack down the right and a low cross into the danger area which was finished clinically from close range.

A disappointing result for the Owls but hopefully they will have the character to bounce back stronger. Credit to Holy Name Celts for a good performance to become the first team to beat Oadby this season.

Blaby & Whetstone 0 Oadby Owls 0 – 26th February 2012 (League)

Oadby pitch themselves against Blaby and Whetstone for this seasons return fixture. Nice facilities and the Tea was good so all we needed was a reasonable performance from all concerned without any of the less savoury aspects of the last encounter, and then home to watch the Carling Cup Final.

Having read the match report from yesterday it was generally felt that Al Parker should take up the reins full time but as Mrs Parker was quick to remind us all Al is lacking in certain departments!

During the warm up the Blaby Motto was translated from Latin to English but this Reporter took woodwork at school so can’t recall the Latin. Maybe next time we’re there someone please remember to bring their school books………………

Anyway, with 3 players withdrawing overnight, our squad came into its’ own as we fielded another strong set of boys. Pre-match preamble over, it’s time for a bit of action as Oadby got the game underway.

Pretty much from the off Blaby defended strongly whenever their lines were threatened. A strong clearance header by Carter led to a corner for Oadby. Good take by Harvey but we couldn’t convert. Josh Hurst then makes one of his many forward runs, moving the ball onto Sergio, then James who crosses into the box no positive outcome. More attacking up our left flank with Jordan putting in a strong running performance, Nimo receives the ball, crosses into the box but we can’t convert. More attacking – Ashman crosses into the box but the Blaby keeper collects comfortably. The midfield battle rages but Sergio is winning his personal battle as he picks up the ball, surges forward and shoots wide MAGNIFICENT !

STRONG challenges are happening all over the pitch. Too many times going through the player and giving the referee plenty to do – Shame really.

Good interception Harvey releasing Josh Hurst to attack again – Onto Ashman, Sergio gets in on things, bursting through the middle, Jordan gets a shot away – wide.

Niam knocks on for Rhys to chase but the Blaby defender saw the ball out – Interesting Shoulder challenge mind you!

Blaby attack – well seen out by Harvey for a corner – The ball comes in and Sergio clears MAGNIFICENTLY. Blaby shot on goal – Hadley saves comfortably.

Crossfield ball Josh Hurst to Ashman, Sergio bursts onto the scene and Jordan gets a shot away but wide.

Jordan plays a lovely ball to Ashman who crosses but the ball is out for a Goal Kick to Blaby. Next we have a free kick in our half. Harvey knocks a good ball Sergio gets a head on but we go nowhere. Back at us Blaby attack but the ball is out for a throw in – Then Nimo gets SQUASHED but Harvey sees a ball out strongly – Well Done! More good work up our left flank with the willing Rhys who wins a corner. Nice ball into the box but we can’t convert. Goalless as the Ref blows for Half Time.

Second Half Subs :- James and Rhys off, Sam and Christian on.We’re on the attack again – Sam and Nimo exchange passes, onto Jordan – More battling from our willing No 13, Sergio gets a long shot away but doesn’t trouble the Blaby goal.

Another Sub – Harvey off, Mason on. Straight into the action Mason surges forward to Sam onto Ashman cross into the box NOUT. Harry stands strong but Mason is felled – free kick to us. Josh Hurst gives a great option to receive the ball – Harry finds him and we’re attacking – Quick exchange of passes and he’s in the box – Unleashes a shot but it really needed a WHACK! Keeper saves easily but great movement to get there.

Blaby back at us but then we play a simple ball down the middle, Sam takes control and TWINKLES into the box, Ashman has an attempt on goal – Nice move! Then Ashman gets the ball again and plays a nice ball into the box. Both Sam and Nimo run in from deep but the Lineman flags for an offside No progress. Blaby go on the attack and shoot high and wide – Hadley is having a quiet day.

More good work from Josh Hurst, Mason and Christian onto Ashman – shot away for a Goalkick – We’re not getting much closer. The Blaby keeper gets down low and saves well when called into action. Christian wins a free kick on the edge of the box – Sam takes to Ashman ends up with a goal kick to Blaby.

Less than 10 mins to go – Nimo off Rhys on – Ashman combines with Sam crosses into the danger area but Blaby clear their lines. Back at them but the keeper tidies up.

5 mins to go and we attack down the left flank – Sam avoids a nasty challenge but seconds later Rhys is clattered and has to be substituted for Harvey.

Few more challenges but no attempts on goal worthy of mention – The Referee blows for full time and after a short post match review with the boys, Assistant Manager Toke carries Rhys across the pitch and to his waiting Mum for a trip to hospital – Hopefully nothing will be broken.

Time for the Carling Cup Final !

Stourbridge 1 Oadby Owls 2 – 25th February 2012 (MJPL)

Oadby recorded a 16th straight win to preserve their 100% MJPL record for the season with a 2-1 victory away to Stourbridge.

The day started with Sam trotting out for the pre-match warm up wearing his tight lycra cycling shorts but forgetting to put on his match shorts much to the amusement of his team mates and the spectators. The match didn’t start with the same level of entertainment as the Owls made a sluggish start to the game and struggled to get into their stride as Stourbridge made it difficult for them to play their normal expansive passing game. The first chance for Oadby came when a poor clearance from the Stourbridge keeper fell to Kuda but he couldn’t get the ball fully under control on the right of the area and was crowded out before he could get his cross over. Kuda then won a header from a Stourbridge clearance which set James free but he couldn’t get his shot off and the ball ran out for a goal kick. Mason was played in on the right side of the area and his cross/shot on the volley was just wide of the far post. A corner from Sam was half cleared by Stourbridge and it fell to Rhys on the edge of the area but his shot was blocked by a defender. A flick on from James to Rhys out wide on the left, his cross into the box deceived the keeper as it struck the near post but went behind for a goal kick. James then beat his man down the left and crosses from the byline to find Kuda for a strike at goal but the shot is blocked. Alex, Carter and Harrison were keeping the Stourbridge forwards quiet with solid defending but on the counter attack a ball into the Owls box finds a player unmarked and Hadley has to make a very good save at point blank range when a goal looked likely. Oadby then made the breakthrough when a ball over the top from Kuda finds James who turns his marker and shoots low into the bottom corner at the near post.

Half time: Stourbridge 0 Oadby Owls 1

The Owls started the second half pressing forward in search of more goals. Harrison plays the ball down the left touchline finding Jordan who turns and squares it for Mason who shoots just wide from the edge of the area. James then collected the ball in the Stourbridge half running at the defence, his cross/shot into the box just eludes Sam coming in at the far post. Stourbridge were then on the attack and a deep cross finds a player at the back post but Josh H makes a saving block to clear the danger. Oadby then produced one of their best moves of the match when a flick on from Kuda released Jordan and his cross field ball is perfect for Rhys who shoots powerfully towards the top left corner but the Stourbridge keeper makes a good save. A ball from the back from Harrison finds Rossa in midfield who drives forward and unleashes a great shot into the top right corner of the Stourbridge net to mark his 2nd Owls debut with a goal to make it 2-0.

Oadby still coming forward and Niam plays Rhys in down the left, his low cross is stabbed just wide by Jordan at the near post. A corner from Sam also to the near post is met by Harrison but his effort just misses the target. Kuda then plays in Christian on the right who plays a good ball into the box to Jordan but he is crowded out by the Stourbridge defence. Stourbridge then threaten just outside the Owls area but they are thwarted by good blocks from Jordie and Josh H. A slip at the back from Oadby almost lets in a Stourbridge striker but Jordie tracking back gets in a great saving tackle. With only two minutes left another slip up at the back allows Stourbridge to get through on goal but as Hadley closes the striker down his shot is drifting wide but the unfortunate keeper catches the man and concedes a penalty. Stourbridge convert the penalty to pull a goal back but the Owls have done enough to win the game.

Oadby Owls 2 Leicester Nirvana 1 – 19th February 2012 (County Cup semi-final)

Oadby reached the County Cup final after a comfortable 2-1 semi-final win over Leicester Nirvana played at Barlestone St Giles FC.

The Owls changed their formation from their usual 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 and it paid off as the central midfield trio of Christian, Sergio & Niam stamped their authority on the game in the early stages. With Oadby playing without a regular goalkeeper it was good to see that the Owls defence of Bradie, Carter & Harrison limited Nirvana to almost no attempts at goal in the first half, so stand in keeper Harvey wasn’t called upon to make a save of any note. The Owls were the team doing all the attacking and Sam was the first to have a good chance at goal but dragged his shot wide from the edge of the area. Niam played a great ball out wide to the right wing and a perfect cross from Josh A was met with a powerful 8 yard volley from James which was just over the bar. Niam again set Josh A free down the right but his angled shot was high and wide. Sergio then won a battle for the ball in the far right corner and his cross into the box was just too strong for Rhys arriving at the far post. Sam then won the ball on the right corner of the 18 yard box and his cross found Rhys whose shot was saved at the near post by the Nirvana keeper. Just before the interval Oadby made the breakthrough when Sam chased after what looked to be a lost cause but he kept the ball in at the byline and as the keeper advanced to close him down he guided it past him into an empty net from a very acute angle.

Half time: Oadby Owls 1 Leicester Nirvana 0

The Owls brought on Alex, Jordie & Euan for the second period and started the half as the dominant team again. James and Euan combined to win the ball on the edge of the Nirvana area and Euan set the ball for Christian but his shot across goal deflected into the keepers arms. Nirvana needed to up their game and their lone striker Momo was the main threat as he tried his best to cause the Owls defence some problems. There was a scare for Oadby when a Nirvana player went down in the box after a challenge but the referee waved away their appeals for a penalty. Oadby continued to press forward and the second and decisive goal came when Sam and Euan took the ball off Nirvana on the left side of the area and Euan beat his man to fire home low into the bottom corner. With time running out on Nirvana they won a corner after a good save from Harvey. From the corner in the dying seconds they pulled a goal back but it was nothing more than a consolation and the Owls were not to be denied their fully deserved victory.

Full time: Oadby Owls 2 Leicester Nirvana 1

Special mention should go to Harvey who went in goal as a replacement for the unavailable Hadley. Harvey was well protected by his team mates and was rarely involved in the action on the day. But when called upon he dealt with everything coolly and calmly. Well done Harvey!

Oadby can now look forward to the final against old rivals Highfield Rangers at Holmes Park at the end of April. Before then there are many more important Saturday and Sunday games for the squad to play, so let’s keep the unbeaten run going boys!

Oadby Owls 3 Nuneaton Town 1 – 18th February 2012 (MJPL)

So the BIG weekend of football finally arrived for our boys as Oadby Owls welcomed Nuneaton to our Saturday home for a long awaited match up. Both teams started the day with a 100% record in the Midland Junior Premier League – How would we fare?

The conditions were WET and WINDY – Just the sort of day when a warm cup of tea is needed. Once the nets were up the dads retired to the pre match lounge and the Oadby Dinner Ladies didn’t disappoint – Nice!

The conditions were always going to play a part in this game but before the action started Danny Gill, resplendent in his new Training Jacket (with name on the front), put the boys through their warm up. Simon Hobart took on the role of Water Boy and Al Parker was notable for his late appearance. But enough of an introduction, let’s get on with the action…………………..

Our starting line up – Hadley between the posts; Harvey, Harrison, Carter and Josh Hurst our defensive line up; Alex, Mason, Sergio and Nimo Midfield; Jordan and Kuda up front had the wind in their faces as Nuneaton got the game underway and they pretty much dominated the 1st 15 mins.

Pleasant on the eye they kept the ball with patient passing and movement. However, for all their possession they couldn’t find a way though to Safe Hands. Our Midfield may not have been able to gain control but defended deep as a unit working well with the defence.

Little bit of action for you: – Josh clears our lines, back at us. Harvey gets a foot in, back at us. Ball up our right hand side, Alex pins his ears back and wins a throw in. Harrison makes a lovely turn on the ball and lays a ball into the mIdfield, back at us. Harvey heads back to Safe Hands who collects and gets us moving again. At this point someone phoned the visiting linesman and we were treated to the theme from Spaghetti Westerns – Entertaining but not as good as the football on display.

We begin to play the way we are facing with Kuda laying the ball back to Alex, back at us. Nuneaton have an effort on goal from a tight angle – Ended up in the side netting. Jordan is battling away helping the Midfield, our Defence is holding firm but it is one way traffic from our visitors.

Josh wins the ball and threads a nice pass but we’re not retaining the ball – Kuda and Alex attack but the Nuneaton No5 is having a great game AND he is QUICK!

The wind is making us play the ball on the floor and all the boys are touching it – Josh Hurst is tackling well and linking with Alex. Niam nice take and pass. Carter/Josh/Sergio/Alex keeping the ball just couldn’t release Kuda. Now we’re pressing. Still defending as a unit. And then a tackle is missed on the edge of our box and pretty much out of nothing a strike that creeps into the bottom corner off a post – Nuneaton take the lead 1-0

Substitution – Harvey off to rest his foot, Rhys on, Nimo moves to Left Back. Hadley collects, Rhys and Jordan combine but the rain is falling harder now making note taking more difficult – If only I had an umbrella – The Grouse family do and Paul, ever the gentlemen, lets Mrs Grouse do the holding!!!

Corner to Nuneaton, Kuda clears, Nuneaton shoot wide and continue to dominate but our boys are standing their ground.

Subs – Mason and Alex off – Sam and Jordie on – We attack then they’re back at us with tackles flying in and a great saving block from Josh. Then all of a sudden we’re in their half and win a free kick 25 yards out. Recent introduction to the match Sam Grouse steps up – Is it Direct? Will he clip it into the box? Mum needs to know.

NAH – Up he steps and WHACK! – The ball dips over the keeper, in off the underside of the crossbar, and we’re level 1-1 FANTASTIC! Nuneaton are stunned but attack anyway and Hadley collects.

HALF TIME – Tea and a chance to dry out!

The 2nd half gets underway with JP on in place of Jordan. After a few mins Nuneaton change their keeper – an embarrassment of riches in the keeping dept! Our defence are still holding firm and we have more action down our right hand side. We see the ball out for a throw in – Josh Hurst. Niam / Rhys / Kuda / Sergio linking. We’re pressing Nuneaton who now can’t find their players – The conditions are interesting!

Sams a bit late on a tackle (about 2 mins!) The Nuneaton No 5 sorts out both Sam and Jordie and then we’re caught offside. At this point the touchline resembled the tent city outside St Pauls except with Umbrellas. Family Beeken with matching his and hers AND Chester sporting a natty PINK one!

Jordie volleys wide, Kuda presses, Sergio has an effort wide. Harry sees the ball out. Kuda strong up front, Rhys tackling and then Nuneaton knock a through ball down the middle. With the Nuneaton striker bearing down one on one, Hadley makes a FANTASTIC save!

We clear our lines from the resulting corner – Carter is strong at the back – We’re playing the ball across the midfield – Sam jinks through a few challenges but can’t make the final ball count.

Carter heads, Niam tackles and moves the ball up the line, Kuda wins a throw in – We’re playing to our feet – JP nearly in on goal. The defence is standing firm. Josh to Carter, Harry, Niam they’re all in on the act.

Time for a tactical change 3 at the back – Maybe preparation for a future fixture? – Harry, Carter, Niam. Jordie helps out and Hadley is in excellent form. Nice and quick passing from our boys – Serge plays in to Kuda but the Nuneaton No5 clears up AGAIN!

Sub – Nimo off Harvey on and we’re on the attack up our right hand side – Harvey controls the ball and plays to Sergio, onto Rhys, JP and into Kuda who twinkwled in the box and finished neatly from a VERY tight angle – We’re in the lead 2-1 !

At this point a car alarm went off and after 17 honks we realised it was one of our supporters who wasn’t brave enough to stand in the rain! Nuneaton, stunned by this, attacked again but Sergio is on his game and wins the ball back. Number 5 again is having a great game.

To be fair there was a bit more action BUT the rain got to my notepad and all I can recall is a great move up our left. Started by Christian into a MASSIVE space that JP had ghosted into. JP took a few steps forward, drew the keeper and slotted home from outside the box GOAL 3-1 WhoooHOOOO! Couple more mins and the referee blows for full time.

So we were outplayed for parts of the game and went behind BUT just remember the comeback, the tactical switch and the scoreline – EXCELLENT Performance boys – Bring the next match on!

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Josh Hurst, Harrison Norton, Harvey Judd, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Jordan Gill, James Parker, Jordie Burke, Alex Hobart, Carter Gill, Sam Grouse, Kuda Muskwe, Niam Morar

Quorn Juniors 0 Oadby Owls 8 – 29th January 2012 (League)

And so the last Sunday of January saw Oadby Owls take on Quorn Juniors in an afternoon kick off. The morning had seen Leicester Nirvana beaten by Quorn 2006 – If we won we could be back on Top of the Table again so it was all to play for.

In fairness, the game was a pretty much one sided affair with Oadby winning comfortably but it gave our boys an opportunity to resume our passing game and whilst our opposition were mostly outplayed, we must commend them on their exemplary team spirit – Well done Quorn. Hot from his last training session on Wednesday , Danny Gill warmed the boys up prior to letting them off the leash (is this to be a taste of things to come as Danny makes a play for a more permanent managerial position? Watch out Toke!!!)

The pitch was a little heavy as our match referee, Aaron Shaw, got the game underway. Barely before I had written down our starting line up ( Hadley, back 3 Harvey, Carter, Josh Hurst, across the middle Mason, Niam, Christian and Josh Ashman with Sam, Jordan and Rhys up front) we were one up with Jordan slotting home comfortably out of nothing! GOAL 1 Nil

The pitch side chat was not so much about the football, but more, our upcoming parents night out – Watch out for an email – ‘Parents on the town’ – Just a small matter of checking the fixtures and we’re GAME ON! pssst don’t tell Rob cos you know how he likes us to be well rested before games!

Back to the action – Corner – Grouse takes, Ashman heads, BAR! Building from our half – Harvey to Carter to Harvey onto Grouse, Nimo gets in on the move, Jordan in the penalty box – Bit of a melee and the ball is forced over but the final touch came from a Quorn player – GOAL 2 Nil

And no sooner had this match reporter vowed to just report the final score when Sam Grouse pops up and slots the ball home ala Dirk Kuyt (Simon and Phil made the analagy) to make it 3 Nil ! (As a Man U fan that did hurt to write but nonetheless it was a good finish!)

Quorn on the attack led by their lively winger Number 3 – Wide.

Oadby were dominating now and passing the ball around the pitch well but struggled to find that final killer pass. Still it was mildly entertaining and when the boys did get through on goal the Quorn keeper kept his side in things. Missed chances and Quorn saves were the order of the day and then it started RAINING –Great!

Oadby attack down the left hand side – Nice hard ball low into the middle – Excellent control in the box by Ashman and a slot home GOAL – 4 Nil

Substitution Time Harvey off for Serge and Ashman off for Alex. In no time at all Serge is on it in his usual indomitable style– no outcome – Then Carter plays a simple ball over the top for Sam Grouse to run onto and finish smartly – GOAL 5-Nil

Half Time

Jordie replaced Rhys and almost straight from the re-start Quorn were on the attack – Nice ball splitting our defence but OFFSIDE. More mins go by as still Phil Beakin hasn’t returned with the half time coffees – Time for a good passing move Alex/Jordan/Jordie onto Sam taps in– GOAL! 6-Nil

About this time the only agricultural challenge of the day occurred – Christian took it on behalf of the team and this led to a substitution (he could walk later on so it wasn’t all bad!) Attacking period of play from our boys but no end product – The Quorn keeper is having a good day and keeping the numbers down – Well done player!

We had numerous chances but really the stand out moment was when our Number 15 jinked into the box and WHACKED the ball wide – WHOOPS! – For those who don’t know their squad numbers, Josh Hurst proudly turned and identified himself! Well done lad! More domination but we can’t find the killer ball – And then at the end of yet another assault on the Quorn goal, Alex controls the ball and from 25 yards volleys a MAGNICIFENT effort over the Quorn keeper into the back of the net – GOAL of the Weekend! 7-Nil

Quorn keeper thwarts yet another attack with a point blank save – Corner results and from that Nimo finishes through a crowd of players GOAL 8-Nil

The last action worthy of note ended with a goal line clearance from an Alex effort and the referee blows for Full Time. Not the nicest game of football on the eye but the boys have seen it through and will be back in the number one spot by the time this reporter has had a post match pint with his father in law!

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Christian Farrar, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd, Alex Hobart, Jordie Burke, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Sam Grouse, Mason Smith, Niam Morar, Josh Hurst, Jordan Gill, Josh Ashman

Oadby Owls 2 Rushall Olympic 0 – 28th January 2012 (MJPL)

This match was eagerly anticipated as top of the table Oadby knew they would be tested by second placed Rushall Olympic. It turned out to be a close encounter in which the Owls took the points thanks to a goal in each half.

Both sides started well as they tried to gain the upper hand during the early exchanges, and it was Oadby who made the breakthrough on five minutes after defending a Rushall attack the ball was headed clear by Christian and picked up in midfield by Sam who played the ball out wide to Kuda on the right, a quality deep cross had the keeper stretching and he could only palm it into the path of Sergio who blasted home from 6 yards. 1-0 Oadby. Rushall did not let this early setback deter them and they pressed Oadby hard to try to get back on level terms. A high ball into the Oadby box was allowed to bounce by the Owls defence which let Rushall in on goal but a saving challenge from Harrison was just enough to force their strikers shot high and wide. A through ball to Kuda sent him away one on one with the Rushall keeper but his first touch was just too heavy and the advancing keeper was able to gather the ball. After 30 minutes Oadby rang the changes with Alex, Josh A, Niam & Jordan replacing Christian, Sam, Rhys & James. Next it was Rushall on the attack and Hadley had to make a good save from close range with the rebound being blazed over the bar. Then Rushall had a well struck free kick from 25 yards but it was well held by Hadley low down. Just before half time the Owls had two good attempts at goal, firstly a 20 yard strike from Jordie which went just over the bar, then Jordie won a header in the centre which fell to Niam who laid it off to Kuda and his powerful shot from 25 yards was heading for the top corner but the keeper made a save at full stretch.

Half time: Oadby Owls 1 Rushall Olympic 0

The second half started with Mason replacing Jordie in the centre of the Oadby midfield and it was Mason who linked up with Kuda to feed Jordan for a low cross into the Rushall box but it eluded any Owls players. Then there was a good cross from the right by Josh A which was met by a stooping header from Harrison but the keeper saved. Alex then put a good ball into the box from the right but Jordans near post volley is just wide. Rushall respond by putting Oadby under pressure but good defending collectively from Carter and Harvey thwarts the danger. A good combination from Jordan and Niam on the left resulted in a threatening cross into the box but Rushall defend it well. Kuda and Josh A set up Jordan on the edge of the area and his shot is spilt by the keeper but is then scrambled away to safety. Owls player of the day Hadley then has to make a smart save to keep Rushall at bay after the ball is needlessly given away just outside the box. Oadby eventually managed to double their lead when a corner from Niam on the left is crossed in at the second attempt and finds Josh A unmarked to finish well giving the keeper no chance. 2-0 Oadby. The Owls continued to press in search of a third goal which would make the game safe, Harvey was sent away down the left but his cross into the box didn’t manage to find an Oadby player. A corner by Alex from the right was met by the head of Kuda but the keeper saved. Rushall did not give up the fight and kept pressing for a goal of their own. In the closing minutes they opened up the Owls defence but the shot from the edge of the area was wide which preserved Oadby’s two goal advantage.

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Harrison Norton, Harvey Judd, Josh Ashman, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Jordan Gill, James Parker, Jordie Burke, Alex Hobart, Carter Gill, Sam Grouse, Kuda Muskwe, Niam Morar, Mason Smith

Oadby Owls 6 Whetstone Juniors 3 – 22nd January 2012 (League Cup)

Sunday 22nd January – A WINDY day in Oadby as we welcomed Whetstone Juniors of the 3rd Division to fortress Combe Park in the Quarter Final of the League Cup. Top of Division 3 with a 100% record and a positive goal difference of 53 – These boys know how to score goals. Could Whetstone provide an upset? Would it be an epic encounter? Read on for the detail……………….

The conditions were always going to play a part in this match and so with the wind in their faces our starting line up of Hadley between the posts, Josh Hurst, Carter, Bradie and Niam the back 4, Alex, Sergio, Jordie and Rhys in the middle, James and Sam up front, got the game underway.

We started on the backfoot with good defensive work by Carter tidying things up – The ball wasn’t out of our half for the 1st few mins as Whetstone pressed but with no end product – A bit of head tennis by Nimo nearly got Rhys away but Whetstone were still bossing things. Then we began to get a grip on the game with Alex passing to Sam and we’re on the offensive but no end product. Whetstone keeper pops a BIG kick down the middle and we’re attacking again JP nips in and his effort is saved by their keeper – Corner. Back at us but Hadley collects the ball comfortably and distributes well so we‘re back on the attack. The busy Alex is moving the ball well up to JP – another Corner.

Whetstone clear and press but our defence easily deal with their forwards. Next Sam holds the ball nicely and plays in Jordie who slips an interesting Whetstone challenge and crosses – Out for a corner BUT better football from our boys now. There followed a sustained period of corners to Oadby but we didn’t trouble the Whetstone goal. And then the shout went up – Goal to Oadby! – ‘fraid it was on the adjacent pitch but the signs are looking good!

Our forward line and midfield are working hard together – Sam to JP to Josh to Alex. And then Jordie pops up again winning the ball and sprays a DELIGHTFUL cross field ball to Alex, onto James, Jordie again – FANTASTIC football move into the penalty area – Numerous attempts on goal but no one can get a clean connection until Sergio gets in on the act and finishes smartly – GOAL ! 1-0

Straight from the re-start we’re on the attack and are gaining the upper hand. Whetstone, whilst still dangerous are being contained as we play our brand of passing football and take the match to them – Jordie great ball to Alex who pins his ears back and attacks Whetstone who recover their composure but still their attacks tend to be long balls down the middle comfortably dealt with by Hadley who collects yet another wind assisted clearance from the Whetstone half.

Whetstone free kick – Josh Hurst clears onto Rhys, Jordie, Sam they’re back at us down our left. Next we’re finding our players but the game goes a little scrappy as both teams are fighting the elements. Whetstone win a free kick near the centre circle – Straight down the middle and Hadley sees it out for a goal kick. Carter takes up the line to JP to chase – it’s gonna be one of those days for our forwards! Another good attack – Josh to JP, wide to Sam back at us cleaned up by Jordie. Whetstone move the ball across the edge of our penalty area, their forward gets a shot away but wide.

Time for a substitution – JP off Mason on – Another shot on our goal safely gathered by Safe Hands. More pressure from Whetstone – we miss a few important tackles in our penalty area and all of a sudden it’s 1-1 ! Hmmm! To be fair they deserved the goal.

The boys don’t panic and we’re offensive again – Mason to Alex foul! Free Kick on the edge of the Whetstone box. From the free kick Alex almost forces the ball over the line but with wind assistance the ball remains in play and is cleared. Alex crosses, Jordie heads on and we’re making progress up the left hand side. But then Whetstone attack us again with a bouncing ball into our box – Hadley comes to collect and a 3 player collision results – Quickest to react is the Whetstone player who taps into an empty net – GOAL 2-1

WhetstoneFrom the re-start Sergio gets some FANTASTIC challenges in and wins a free kick – No end product but the lead doesn’t last long as Mason powers into the Whetsone box and gets upended – PENALTY!

By now the wind is so strong it is moving the ball and we need someone to put their foot right through this – Up steps Jordie and WHACKS the ball Top Corner – It doesn’t get much better – 2-2!

And then almost straight from kick off we’re down again 3-2 Whetstone as collectively our defence don’t clear their lines and Whetstone take advantage.

DING DONG – More strong tackling from our visitors and Whetstone give away another free kick for a foul on Josh Hurst – Mason takes, Jordie clips a sublime ball over the top for Sam Grouse to run onto and finish coolly – GOAL 3-3 Cracking game!

Time for another Whetstone attack down our lines WIDE – Carter and Josh combine to clear our lines – Again they’re back at us but this time the effort goes over the bar.

HALF TIME 3-3 Time for a chat but this is a good entertaining match!

Half time subs – Josh H, Sergio, Rhys OFF – Christian, JP, Harvey ON – Bit of a formation move around but I had my mind on the half time Sausage Roll so didn’t pay too much attention! Anyway to the action………………

With the wind at their backs it’s only Oadby attacking now – Strong challenge Carter to Alex up the wing. Tidy play – Mason splits the Whetstone defence with a lovely ball Alex is onto it but can’t convert. James chases down the Whetstone keeper Nimo gets in on the act with more good attacking play then Whetstone attack but Carter and Bradie clear our lines – Foul on Mason – Foul on Nimo – Clipped free kick Sam Grouse heads over the bar. Then Whetstone are moving the ball up our left but Nimos there defending each throw in – Harvey gets in on the act – He’s been paying attention and defends well.

There’s not much action down our righthand side so boys if you were playing there don’t worry – you’ll get mentioned next week!

Face injury in our box – Once it’s sorted we’re on the attack again up the left. Nimo, now in midfield, plays it long but Whetstone clear the ball almost to the clubhouse! Throw in – Mason to Sam OUT

Mason again this time to Nimo OUT. AGAIN the ball falls to Mason out for a throw in.

Harvey moves the ball to JP no outcome. Harvey again onto Jordie to Alex cross – We’re at them – told you the wind would make a difference! Harvey to Serge who switches play to the other side of the pitch, Alex gets on it and finishes into the bottom corner – GOAL 4-3! Hurrah!!!!!

Nimo to Harvey into the box Goal Kick – Back at us and back at Whetstone it’s good attacking play from our boys. More action up our left side. Mason to Alex and then back at us. Time for a sub. Off comes the hard working Jordie replaced by Sergio – the momentum we’re created won’t change with this sub!

An then from nowhere Harvey controls the ball on half way and sets off on what can only be described as a dazzling dribble, taking the ball inside one Whetstone midfielder, outside the next one, outside the next Whetstone defender – the ball surely is glued to his twinkle toed feet, inside another defender into the box and he gets a shot away saved by the Whetstone keeper BLIMEY – He’s obviously been watching videos of when I played!!!!! Good lad makes this Reporter proud!

We mustn’t be complacent Whetstone are still dangerous as they search for an equaliser but Hadley is alive to the threat and back to his imperious best. Then it’s down the middle again Sam – JP to Sam, Nimo to Sam (the boy Grouse is all over the place – great energy!) and Nimos matching him stride for stride – good stuff!

Whetstone attack again (these boys don’t deserve to be in the 3rd division!) End to end stuff another Corner to us – Excellent delivery from Sam. Carter plays the ball into Harvey. JP to Sam, Serge/JP to Rhys –Another corner taken by Sam and just tickled the cross bar – Out for a goal kick.

And then we got the break we wanted – Serge nicks a ball into Alex and at his 2nd attempt he hits the back of the net GOAL ! 5-3 Daylight at last!

Not long left but we’re moving the ball quicker now. Whetstone are still coming forward when they can, trying to get back into the game. Then Josh Hurst and Bradie play the ball into Alex and a Whetstone player decided it was time for a belated birthday treat for Alex! – Alex felled and a deserved yellow card. Carter knocks just too long for the ever willing JP and the ball is cleared out. From the resulting throw in Mason sneeks a finish into the bottom corner to make it 6-3 and the ref blows for FULL TIME – 6-3 Oadby Probably about the right score line BUT the boys know they’ve been in a match!

Congratulations to both teams for a really entertaining game – We look forward to the League Cup Semi Final and meeting up with Whetstone in the coming years!

Kidderminster Hawks 2 Oadby Owls 3 – 21st January 2012 (MJPL)

Top of the table Oadby travelled to play fifth placed Kidderminster Hawks on this damp and windy January morning in what promised to be a good contest. On a very good pitch the game did not disappoint with the Owls securing the 3 points which kept their 100% MJPL winning record in tact.

After a pre-match briefing and a boot inspection from the referee the match got underway. Oadby were caught cold in the 2nd minute when they fell behind after failing to clear a Kidderminster corner. Despite this early setback the Owls soon got into their stride with some good passing and movement on the right flank between Josh H and Josh A. Oadby were pinning Kidderminster back in their own half and it was Sergio who was first to get a shot on goal when James set the ball for him on the edge of the area but the keeper saved well. Next there was a free kick from Christian into the box which was met by a glancing header from Harrison wide of the left upright. Then a Christian corner was again won by Harrison whose header into the six yard box was steared towards goal by Jordan but the Kidderminster keeper was on hand to make the save. Kidderminster then had an attack which ended with a 25 yard shot at goal wide of the right post. Still only 15 minutes gone and more good play from Kidderminster down the right resulting in a Hawks player through on goal but Harrison recovered just in time to make a good blocking tackle.

On 18 minutes Oadby were back on level terms. Quick thinking from Christian and Jordan taking a short corner, a one-two back to Christian, a quality ball into the box is missed by Bradie and Harrison but Josh A is at the back post, his cross shot back across the goal finds James there to turn it in from close range. Kidderminster then threaten again with another attacker through on goal but Hadley is quick off his line and blocks the attempt at goal. Sergio plays a great ball into the Kidderminster box but nobody reacts quickly enough to get on the end of it. Next Harvey & Sergio start off a good move in the middle, the ball is spread wide to Josh A whose cross was just too deep but the ball is collected on the left by Rhys to Sergio whose cross is headed in by Jordan for a debut goal. 2-1 to Oadby on 28 minutes. Kidderminster then hit back with a dangerous cross into the Owls area but it doesn’t find a Hawks player and drifts wide. On 32 minutes Sergio picks up the ball in his own half and plays a sublime ball just over the top of the Kidderminster defence which finds Alex racing through on goal to make it 3-1 to Oadby. Just before the interval the Owls play a neat move down the left involving Harvey, Rhys, Sergio and Jordan but this time there is no end product.

Half time: Kidderminster Hawks 1 Oadby Owls 3

Kidderminster start the second half brightly and get in behind the Oadby defence but Hadley is there to pull off a great save when they looked likely to score. Then the Hawks are in on goal again after hesitant Owls defending, the shot on goal beats the advancing Hadley but Carter manages to cover behind to clear the ball off the line. Oadby respond with an attack down the left side, James plays the ball to Alex who gets to the byline and his cross finds Josh A but his shot from 6 yards is saved by the keeper. Some good play from Sam in the middle releases Jordie who drives into the box but his cross is gathered by the keeper. A Kidderminster corner is again not cleared by the Owls and falls to a Hawks player who fires over from 6 yards. More sloppy defending from Oadby allows a Kidderminster player to pick up the ball in space and his shot from 25 yards is only just over the bar. Oadby attack again and a shot on goal from distance by Jordie is saved by the Hawks keeper. With approx 6 minutes remaining Kidderminster pull a goal back with a good finish after some neat play in and around the Owls box. With the Oadby lead now halved it was an uncomfortable last few minutes for the Owls as Kidderminster thought they might be able to force a draw. Oadby did just enough to close out the game but were relieved to hear the referee blow the full time whistle.

Full time: Kidderminster Hawks 2 Oadby Owls 3

In summary it was the classic game of two halves with the Owls playing as well as they have done all season in the first period. Unfortunately Oadby didn’t manage to play with the same quality in the 2nd half and by the end of the match were happy to hang on to win 3-2. Credit to Kidderminster who looked a good side and contributed well to a very good game of football.

Oadby Owls 2 St Andrews 0 – 15th January 2012 (League)

Twas a cold and frosty January morning when we all received the good news……..The game is on BUT just delayed until 2pm! Grrrrrrrrreat!

When we arrived in Oadby for the game the sun was out and the pitch was green – Much better than that hard white frost and white mist when you speak! Anyway to the matter in hand as we welcomed St Andrews to fortress Coombe Park – our 100% home record still intact – would it be so at the end of a tough encounter? Read on to find out…………………….

With a somewhat changed squad we began with :-Hadley in goal, Josh Hurst, Harrison, Carter, Harvey at the back, Niam, Sergio, Mason, Sam across the middle, James and Rhys up front.

St Andrews got the game underway but it was Oadby who were the more offensive with a ball straight through the heart of the SA defence – JP was onto it but the ball went out. No joy from the resulting corner but the boys continued attacking. Building from the back, Carter to Harvey – out, Sergio controls nicely and plays over the top for Niam. Cross Harvey to Sam Grouse who gets a shot away saved by the SA keeper. – Rhys gets a ball over – no outcome – SA attack cleared by Carter out to Josh who plays it up the line bit long for JP. Throw in down the line now Nimo heads on Rhys gets a foot in – Bit of good action. Now we saw some good neat interplay – Excellent football the omens are looking good! Sergio puts a ball through to Sam but he can’t get there – The pitch is slippy but it’s the same for both sides – Hadley gets called into action – Back to his ‘safe hands best’ again.

Quick throw in by Nimo – into Rhys who lets the ball roll across his body and curled a shot just wide of the upright. Cross in Rhys header saved. And then Nimo gets a great cross into the middle and James finishes with a low diving header in off the post – GOAL! 1-0 We’re under way!

And then virtually from the re-start Sergio waltzed through the midfield and threaded a ball for Sam Grouse to run onto and finish smartly – GOAL ! 2-0

There then followed a period of scrappy play but our defence stood firm. SA had a freekick saved by Safe Hands. No one could grasp full control of the game and we enjoyed an open game with SA attacking then us – Sergio was battling in the midfield to gain the upperhand – Nice chip by Harvey to Carter, backheader up the line then it’s back at us. Sam breaks up another attack. Rhys gets in on the action. Sergio and Mason exchange passes – CRACKING play boys!

About this time Harrys dad came and interrupted the flow of the Match Report but the footballing Gods ensured that the next kick by Harry saw the ball out and Mud from Harrys boot land in Marks face – Nice! It was that kind of a day because a few mins later some landed on me too Hmmmmm!

Good defensive work from the boys and then we’re attacking again – Rhys to Harvey to Sergio and we move the ball quickly ¾ of the length of the pitch – Good energy on a sticky pitch. Time for a substitution Alex and Jordie on for Mason and Rhys – give the legs a rest!

Immediate great challenge from Jordie – We might change the personnel but the boys don’t let the tempo drop. Cross by Harvey into the box a bit close to their keeper. Sergio plays a ball into JP no outcome.

And then it happened – A long ball from St Andrews straight down the middle of our defence. This has caught us out in the past but we dealt with it! Well done Harry who played it out for a throw in – He took a knock and needed treatment so the Ref made him stay on the side whilst SA took the resulting throw – The ball ends up in our box and the SA striker gets a shot on goal –EXCELLENT Point blank save from Safe Hands – Got away with that one! Sergio then plays the ball over his shoulder ‘Class’ was the shout from the side but then again it was Toke!

Quick Sub – Harry off Christian on.

Half Time!

The second half began with a re-shaped defence – Christian at right back, Harvey and Carter in the Centre and Niam at left back. The action was pretty much as before with Oadby attacking – Alex now up front and almost through – Corner to Oadby.

SA back at us with the dangerous no 17 Mo – Harvey and Hadley clear our lines competantly. Sergio onto Alex- keeper clears – Good pressure by the boys. SA attack and Niam clears with a great defensive header, corner to SA.

And then the debate for goal line technology got underway – Was it or wasn’t it over the line? Nice delivery and a melee in our 6 yard box – The ball is heading in but Sam Grouse nods the ball against the underside of the crossbar and then it is cleared for another corner. However, the net moved. The Ref didn’t give a goal and the SA players didn’t shout for a goal BUT the away supporters did! Anyway the Ref didn’t give it so the score remained 2-0 to Oadby.

Another corner from the other side and this time no debate it was wide. Time to clear our lines and focus – Good cross field ball Christian to JP and we moved the SA netting – Definitely wide this one Goal Kick no complaints.

Back to the action on the field – Rhys good pace and a cross Sergio gets a shot away- SA goalie clears.Sub – Sergio off Mason on time for a breather Mr! Great feet from Jordie got a shot away saved. Good foot in by Harvey, ball over to Christian, Carter see it out. Mason and Jordie combine again. SA are coming at us but Carter enjoys an excellent individual spell and with good collective defending our lines are not breached.

It’s pretty much all St Andrews now but you can’t dominate all match! Head tennis Rhys plays the ball over to JP who gets a shot away – SA keeper saves low to his right. The midfield and forwards are working together creating chances but no changes to the score and nothing clear cut. Another good challenge by Jordie gets accompanied by Toke wanting more triangles – You know what is needed boys!

Shot by SA Mo on our goal – Safe Hands saves comfortably. Free kick to SA on half way – Good header out by Harvey, Jordie wins the scraps and moves the ball to JP who shoots. Keeper blocks and Alex has another pop at goal – wide.

10 mins to go Hadley gets Carter to tie his laces.Good football Nimo to Sergio to JP effort goes over the bar. Need to find our players when we’re clearing lines.

At this point I was wrapping up the match report – Nothing else was going to happen AND then SA attack for just about the last time and the ball dribbles through our penalty area, against the corner post and out to safety. Few mins left and the Referee blows his whistle for Full Time.

Our 100% home record continues – A testing game but it was good that we were able to move the game to the afternoon kick off and avoid future fixture congestion – Just a shame the ladies in the catering office had gone home to cook their Sunday Roasts!

Birstall Utd 0 Oadby Owls 0 (AET, Owls win 4-3 on pens) – 8th January 2012 (County Cup quarter-final)

The Owls progressed to the semi-finals of the County Cup after a nail biting 4-3 penalty shoot-out win against Birstall Utd.

Oadby were the most disappointed of the two sides that they didn’t win the match outright as many good chances were squandered. The missed opportunities to score mixed with resilient defending and an outstanding display from the Birstall goalkeeper meant that the match remained goalless at full time plus 20 minutes extra time.

The Owls were on top from the start with Sergio and Jordie dominating the centre midfield, spreading the play to start numerous Oadby attacks. Alex was first to go close after running onto a headed flick on from Sam but the keeper saved with his legs at the near post. Birstall suffered an early setback when their dangerous striker Kuda landed awkardly and injured himself when challenging for the ball with Bradie. Kuda had to be replaced and could take no further part in the game. We wish him a speedy recovery. Unfortunately for Oadby, Christian who had started the game well at right back was then injured after a late Birstall challenge which resulted in a booking. Next there was some neat footwork and a good turn from James in the corner, a one two with Sam and an inswinging cross from James, the Birstall keeper punched clear and a shot from Mason on the edge of the area was blocked by a defender. Half time: Birstall Utd 0 Oadby Owls 0

Oadby continued to put Birstall on the back foot throughout the second half. Hadley was more or less a spectator in goal and the Owls defence of Alex, Carter, Bradie & Harvey were rarely troubled. A long range shot from Sam forced a good save from the keeper low down at his near post. Josh was next to have a shot from distance but he was off balance and his attempt at goal was high and wide. Niam then had a chance to shoot from the edge of the box but he couldn’t quite lift the ball over the keeper. Sam was then set up from 12 yards but his shot went wide of the left upright when everyone was waiting for the net to bulge. Another guilt edged chance was created for Rhys on the six yard line but his shot was straight at the keeper. Josh then put in a cross which was met by Niam with a diving header but it flew over the bar. As normal time drew to a close Sam managed to get in behind the Birstall defence but his shot went into the grateful arms of the Birstall keeper. Full time: Birstall Utd 0 Oadby Owls 0

Extra time commenced and despite a prediction from some Oadby parents that a final flurry would see us through it never materialised. Both teams were now very tired but the Owls did their utmost to get the goal which they deserved. A free-kick from Alex into the box eluded everyone and was again claimed by the keeper. Christian had a shot from the edge of the area which was gathered by the keeper at the near post. The final chance fell to Alex when he was put through by Josh but the stalemate wasn’t to be broken as the ball bobbled away from him on the bumpy pitch.

So to the spot kicks. The Oadby nerves were jangling but Sam, Sergio and Harvey stepped up to score their penalties. Birstall scored three but Hadley made one great save and another was blasted over the bar. It was left to Jordie to coolly despatch the winner into the Birstall net to send the Owls into the semi-finals.

Oadby Owls 6 Four Corners 0 – 7th January 2012 (MJPL)

Our 1st match of the New Year and an opportunity to get the 100% winning record back on track as we welcomed Four Corners to fortress Judgemeadow, the Saturday home of Oadby Owls. But 1st things 1st, our catering ladies again excelled themselves with their hospitality and seem to have moved the game on – Biscuits AND a tin of toffees……………………..Well Done Ladies! Enough already I hear you cry we want to read about the game! – Not sure how many people noticed the delayed kick off was due to our resident Lino Shane but then again it gave the Match Reporter time to get in position and witness Kick Off!

So we started with Hadley in between the posts, Bee, Harrison, Carter and Josh Hurst our defensive line, Niam, Jordie, Christian and Josh Ashman across the Midfield and James Parker and Ewan up front. Four Corners began the game with some good passing football and kept possession well until our Midfield pack, led by the busy Jordie, broke up the play. Nice interception by the ever encouraging Jordie. This led to a free kick to our boys. Neat control by Ewan led to a throw in. Cross by Ashman who started well and a lob on goal by Jordie just wide. Then all of a sudden whilst we were chatting about Xmas festivities on the sidelines Josh Ashman struck MAGNIFICENTLY from 25yards and rattled the back of the net – GOAL 1-0 !

Four Corners continued to play good looking football but in truth our defence remained untroubled so if I don’t mention you boys you know why. Back to the action – Carter plays a lovely ball to Niam who heads on for James over the bar – Terrific play! Christian great volley pass splitting the FC defence onto James just wide. Niam good close control and moving the ball across the park but no end product. James harrying – Jordie effort over the bar. Harry long ball from the back into the FC penalty area for Alex to chase and to be fair only Alex could’ve reached it – leads to a corner to us – Jordie onto it – Another run by Alex who turns the defender inside out and crosses – just over Niam’s head – More good play by FC but our Midfield break up the play before our defence is called to action.

Nice Midfield battling by both sides Christian to Jordie through ball to James just wide – Ashman to Alex – defender clears – Then our Right Back Josh Hurst is attacking in the FC Penalty area?!?!?!? – Niam/Bee/Jordie nice play wide to Niam and a clipped lob kisses the Crossbar – Good foot in by Jordie – FC attack but Josh Hurst tidies up and sets Alex motoring again – FC back at us tidied up by Harry bit long for Ashman but still the ball is staying in the blue half.

Time for a substitution – Mason on for Ewan – Jordie continues to be all over the place – In a GOOD way mind you! Josh Hurst gets in a great tackle and releases Alex who has a long shot on goal comfortably saved by the FC keeper. And then it happens…………..Harry to Bee to Niam James Parker controls the ball and lobs the keeper from 25 yeards – GOAL 2-0!

Another sub – Carter off and Sergio on. Mason plays a cracking ball up the line just in front of our lino Shane (verb inserted on the instruction of Masons mum and a discussion about cups of Tea ensued!)Back to the action – Lovely header by Niam – Jordie gets another good challenge in the battle for control of Midfield. More attacking with some lovely interplay Christian receives the ball and fires a low cross into the box – JP slots home sharply from 4 yards – Excellent football boys nice on the eye GREAT GOAL – 3-0 ! And all in the presence of Leicester City.

HALF TIME

2nd half started pretty much how the 1st half started – Bit of action and then Jordie played a nice through ball for JP to run onto just outside the 18yard box – Just the small matter of 2 defenders closing JP down but he still managed to get his shot away GOAL 4-0 ! JPs got his hatrick.

More action and we get our 1st corner of the 2nd half – Harvey, on for Bee at left back, steps up and fires it into……………… the side netting – Whoops! Back at us, Sergio fouls an FC player – Kick to FC who attack and attempt a lob on our goal – Hadley saves with virtually his 1st touch and we’re back on the attack. Serge is battling and plays a ball into James who finishes nicely on the run GOAL 5-0 ! Can the boy do anything wrong today?

Sub – Jordie off Harry on who then has a long shot on goal but wide – Niam wins the ball and goes on a great run – corner to us. Back at us with Carter controlling the ball nicely and more importantly moving the ball quickly – GOOD play son! More action JP thro on goal – corner – Ashman takes it, Serge tests the keeper. FC move the ball around nicely again but Carter breaks it up. More attacking by FC – we seem to have lost a bit of control of the midfield and Hadley saves an effort on our goal. Blues are definitely in control now but it’s about time our defence did something in the game! Blue 17 has an effort on goal comfortably saved by Safe Hands.

Tactical switch- Bee to Left back Harvey into Midfield . More ACTION in the centre of the pitch Carter makes a great clearing tackle – Hurst clears – its MESSY boys! Mason makes a nice clearing header but the blues still attack and Josh Hurst makes a timely header close to the goal post – Corner by FC and wide. MESSY again – Good work by Harvey at the back. Alex – excellent work down the flank – Jordie has an effort on goal – The FC Goalie did well but not enough to stop Sergio finishing whilst still on the floor – GOAL 6-0!

Not long left now another great tackle by Jordie then linking with the ever pacey Alex – Sergio wide. Jordie is back now wrestling control of the midfield – the ball breaks to Harvey who fires a magnificent low strike from 30 yards low and arrowing into the bottom corner – Would this open his Oadby account? NO ! Only a world class save by the FC Keeper could deny the boy. Corner to Oadby and with just about the last kick of the game Mason knocks it wide.

FULL TIME – 6-0

Well done boys 2012 has started as well as we could’ve asked for – Bit scrappy at times but then this Reporter is allowed to be picky – Journalistic duties over to Al for the next one!

Highfield Rangers 0 Oadby Owls 0 – 11th December 2011 (League)

Sunday 11th – A chilly but crisp December morning – Most important Frost Free so Game ON away to Highfields Rangers! Nice facilities and the pitch looked in pretty good nick for the time of the year. The pre-match Tea got the thumbs up which is always a good sign and with the wind in our faces, Oadby got the match underway.

Starting brightly, we strung a few passes together – cross field ball JP to Rhys across to Alex and an attack on goal. Highfield back at us Bradie cleared up field – The ball came back with interest from Highfield – an early indication that our defence would need to stand firm with plenty of heading skills – AND they did!

End to end stuff ensued with neither side dominant – nice play Serge and Rhys up our left hand side, hassling by Euan nearly in on goal. A lot of the action was down our left side so Harvey and Rhys were kept busy but dealt with the attacks comfortably. Nice challenge Harvey, onto Jordie lovely ball into Euan who was fouled and the free kick taken by Harvey resulted in an effort on goal by James comfortably saved by the Highfields keeper.

BIG kick out from the goalie and Highfields were on the attack – Good play by the yellows but Oadby cleared their lines. More head tennis – corner to Highfields. Clearing header by Jordie led to a free kick to us. Up the line – Good strong fair play by both sides – Again more up the left hand side nice knock Harvey to Alex out wide GOOD football boys!

More midfield battling, Serge gets a foot in, Harrison gets in one of his MANY headers of the day with a ball into Euan – Highfields are all over Euan like a rash they can sense a threat there! Back with Highfields and their No 8 goes on a run – ball nicked out for a corner by Alex well done!

Highfields corner – Wide – We then set about playing across our back line and got away with it – c’mon boys! Highfield s then had a few mins where they kept control of the ball and we endured some SCRAPPY play but we’re soon back into our stride and passing well finding each other – Harvey to Euan to JP better! Another Highfield attack but Hadleys on his toes and clears up. Sam Grouse gets going up the right but the game is really open and Highfields have a long effort wide.

The starting defence of Harvey, Harrison, Bradie and Alex are being tested with Rhys tracking back and helping out – Then we’re on the attack Serge with a bit too much to do on his own. No one can keep the ball Serge to JP cross……………..

Back at us by Highfields again down our left well seen out by Harvey. Good exchange of passes Harvey and Rhys into the middle and then Highfields have another shot on goal WIDE.

No clear cut chances but our forwards are working hard and pressing the Highfields defence………… all of a sudden Highfields have a shot on target – Well saved Hadley no nonsense! Next bit of action worthy of note was some excellent chest control by Alex and more attacking.

Substitution time – Josh Ashman and Christian on for the hard working Jordie and Sam. TREMENDOUS ball Serge, Rhys onto it and got a shot away– WIDE.

More Oadby pressure and Alex gets a nice challenge in, ball over to Euan, nice effort Goalie spills the ball but we can’t get to follow up………….. More defending Harvey, strong header Bradie, Josh Ashman follows his own clearance up the right hand side and works with Serge, corner to us. Good delivery and Harrison heads wide.

AND then, from just inside our half the Highfields No 15 knocks a ball which bounced over our bar! Up the line JP to Euan, nice turn by Euan who played the ball into Highfields penalty box but we just couldn’t find a finish. Final attack by Highfields before Half Time and our defence stand firm once more.

Half Time 0-0

The half time interval brought a tactical switch by our unusually quiet Manager (perhaps the Referees words about no coaching during the match had taken been taken seriously……………Nah!) 3 at the back Alex off and Mason on to bolster the Midfield.

The second half started with some good passing movement by our boys Rhys / Harvey / Euan – Good football – Challenge on Serge free kick on half way. Good knock by Harvey and then a SHOT by Harvey saved by their keeper.

Highfields attack – Harrison sees the ball back to Hadley and we clear our lines – well played boys. Nice work by Josh Ashman on the right – he’s getting back into his stride after a LONG time out – Serge to JP to Ashman More good work by Euan working tirelessly and closing down the Highfields defence. JP / Euan – excellent – Josh Ashman effort on goal saved – corner! Straight from the corner we’re on the defensive but well played at the back – Harvey to Rhys and we’re back on the attack – Euan felled.

Euan – Ashman – Serge – ball cleared Bradie back to Hadley – more down our left hand side Harvey – Rhys FOUL – Free kick edge of the Highfields penalty box Right foot needed here – Christian steps up and clips a shot that dips and clips the bar or did the keeper save it? The Ref said no!

Mason holds the ball – Serge looks for Ashman – Harrison clears AGAIN! Hadley kick down field Ashman closes Highfields down. Harvey (what’s he doing on the right?) to Serge to Ashman Serge pops a through ball for Euan to run onto and the pressure made the goalie slice his clearance. Nice cross by Euan and a bit of a melee in the area but neither JP nor Ashman can find a finish. Free Kick Serge Wide

JP to Rhys out to Ashman to Christian cross no end product and Highfields attack again – Excellent interception Bradie and then an interesting period of play – A through ball down our middle and a tackle on the Highfields player in the box – Was it a penalty? – The Ref said No!

More attacking by both sides with our defence coping well, Mason closing the Midfield down and Serge having a good strong game – Suddenly the Highfields keeper spills the ball under pressure from JP but we still can’t convert our chances. Jordie takes the ball into the box and the keeper saves – well done keeper!

End to end stuff again Rhys down the left, good knock Harvey, 4 Highfields attackers on Bradie – no problem! About this time the footballing gods conspired to even things up as Josh Ashman felt he deserved a penalty for a push in the back – The Ref didn’t!

GREAT block Harrison more closing down from Euan and Jordie has an effort from half way. Sam is back on and flicks on a ball for Rhys but gave him too much to do. Time for the final substitution Euan off Alex on 2 mins to go. Sam- Rhys –Alex – throw in – corner – Can we do it?.

No! Referee blows for full time!

An excellent game of football to watch, well contested against a good Highfields side – Our defensive play was solid, well organised and we didn’t look like conceding. Our midfield battled and shared control of the centre of the park – Our forwards worked tirelessly and deserved more reward for their efforts. 0 – 0 a fair result? – This reporter thinks we shaded it!

Well played boys time to go home and thaw out!

Quorn 2006 1 Oadby Owls 3 (AET) – 27th November 2011 (League Cup)

Oadby advanced into the quarter-finals of the League Cup at the expense of Quorn 2006 with a hard fought 3-1 win after extra time.

Before the match started both teams, officials and supporters observed a one minute silence as a mark of respect for Gary Speed after the tragic death of the Wales national team manager and former Premier League footballer.

After a slow start Oadby created their first chance when Alex, Euan & James combined to carve out an opening in the box but the Quorn keeper scrambled the ball round the post. Alex sent over the resulting corner but it eluded Mason who nearly got on the end of it at the far post. On 10 minutes the Owls took the lead after a clever switch of play by Sergio to Euan who played in Rhys on the left edge of the area and his shot found the far right corner of the Quorn net. Quorn tried to get back on level terms and a jinking run from their impressive no 17 through the middle allowed him to take a shot at goal from 25 yards but fortunately for Oadby his attempt was high, wide but not so handsome. The Owls went back on the attack and James set the ball for Sergio on the edge of the box but his shot was over the bar. Next Alex put over another deep corner which was headed narrowly wide by Harrison. Christian then played a good ball which sent Josh A away down the right but no Oadby player could get on the end of his cross into the box. Welcome back from long term injury Josh. Just before half time James played in Rhys for an effort on goal but the shot lacked power and was cleared off the line. Then Euan had a powerful shot on the turn but it was straight at and into the keepers arms.

Half time: Quorn 2006 0 Oadby Owls 1

Quorn came at Oadby at the start of the second half and a shot from 18 yards went just wide. The Owls responded when a deep cross from Josh A found Rhys at the far post and he stretched for the ball but couldn’t get his shot on target. Bee, James & Rhys combined well down the left and a cross from James fell to Josh A but he couldn’t manage to force the ball home. A cross from the right by Quorn found one of their players in the box but he blazed over the bar when he should have hit the target. On 50 minutes Quorn drew level when a Keystone Cops moment of madness at the back from Oadby gifted them with the simplest of equalisers. The Owls were shocked by this and it took them a few minutes to regroup but they should have regained the lead when James was put clean through on goal. His attempt to lift the ball over the advancing keeper went straight into his arms. An Oadby corner was only half cleared by Quorn but James shot from the edge of the area was blocked. In the dying seconds of normal time a Harrison free-kick into the area came back out to Christian whose well hit shot was just wide.

Full time: Quorn 2006 1 Oadby Owls 1

So 20 minutes of extra time had to be played and the Owls had to dig deep to ensure a win without having rely on an unwanted penalty shoot-out. Oadby calmed the nerves midway through the first period of ET when player of the day Rhys hit the post with a shot from a Josh A cross, Quorn tried to clear the rebound but it fell to Sergio whose mishit shot found Rhys diving in at the far post to head the Owls back into the lead. The tie was settled in the second half of extra time when a shot from Euan was saved at point blank range by the Quorn keeper but the rebound fell to Mason who clinically despatched the ball low into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Result after extra time: Quorn 2006 1 Oadby Owls 3

Certainly not the best performance of the season as we struggled to put Quorn to the sword but the positive is that apart from the goal conceded, the reliable back line of Hadley, Josh H, Carter, Harrison, Harvey & Bee were rarely troubled. This seasons 100% record continues and the most important thing is that we are through to the next round.

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Josh Hurst, Carter Gill, Harrison Norton, Harvey Judd, Alex Hobart, Mason Smith, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Euan Ford, James Parker, Christian Farrar, Josh Ashman, Bee Sandhu.

Holy Name Celts 2 Oadby Owls 4 – 26th November 2011 (MJPL)

Another balmy November day as we set off for our next test in Birmingham -Holy Name Celts. 1st things 1st though – The pre-match tea and coffee were MAGNIFICENT and then out of the kitchen the ladies brought plates of full English –We couldn’t believe our luck – our ‘catering mums’ are good but this was taking hospitality to a whole new level and we were licking our lips with anticipation…… but our hopes were dashed as the ladies tucked in themselves – Time for football!

The pitch was in excellent condition and presented the boys with an opportunity to play their passing game – If they could find it. And so to the match – A robust encounter played in good spirit but our boys need to start with the confidence and swagger that a 100% record in all competitions warrants. Let’s bring the training ground application to match days.

The game started with an early confidence touch for our stand-in keeper Josh Hurst – was it going to be a busy day for Josh? Only time would tell. We began a little bit sluggish and allowed HNC to try a shot on goal just wide. We then proceeded to play in our box when perhaps it would’ve been more prudent to clear our lines – It’s easy writing the report I know! Corner HNC and headed over with the goal at their mercy – A let off but we began to get things together now and played up the rightside through ball JP to Sam – just offside. More end to end stuff with Bradie cleaning things up and then James Parker was floored – An interesting challenge meant we were without his services until later in the 2nd half and only a mum would really want to check that injury – Unfortunately his mum wasn’t there and dad Al was unmoved!

Euan on for James and we attacked albeit with no end product – Alex got a nice cross over and this reporter thought Serge deserved a penalty – The Ref didn’t! Around about now Sam Grouse put in some excellent pressing and chasing – closing down space and players and generally getting stuck in! More More More effort needed boys c’mon you can all do this. Good pressure on their keeper by Euan. Time for the left side to get involved Bee up and down the line – Christian to Jordie to Euan passing forwards well done! We’re not winning the midfield battle like last week and when our strikers have the ball we’re not moving it as quickly as we need to to create meaningful opportunities – We can do this but we need to work together.

Free Kick to Oadby – easy take by HNC keeper – Cleared by HNC Good header Alex, battling by Serge, Harry pressing their strikers, better, Bradie closing down – Goal Kick to Oadby. And then HNC attack down the middle we didn’t deal with it and the result –GOAL! HNC 1-0. At least this got us moving the ball but a foul on Euan led to an attack on our goal and Josh Hurst was on his toes and heading the ball clear outside his area – Good Work Mr!

Oadby attack led to a corner – Good delivery – header found Jordie and a volley over the bar although to be fair the goal wasn’t threatened. HNC attack but their forward pushed the ball too far and Harry got in a good challenge albeit the Ref thought it was a free kick – it was! More action and a few challenges similar to the one on James earlier – excellent nick by Jordie. Sam continues to get stuck in. At this point in the game our youngest supporter Lois Hobart (10) received a little training in the rudiments of the game from dad Simon – All arms and gestures – was she paying attention? Read on to find out……………………

Substitution time – Carter on for Harry at the back and Harvey on for Jordie in Midfield with Sergio playing a more central role and yet another plane coming home from Ibiza. Nice 1st touch Harvey finding Euan – Bee to Harvey to Serge – nice knock but a tad too long – Back at us well seen out by our defence. Josh Hurst got another touch but he’s really not busy!

HALF TIME !

Half time gave the away supporters an opportunity for discussion and we witnessed Chester the philosopher – Might have to rename him next week! Anyway back to the action as the 2nd Half began and our inspirational Manager made a change – 3 at the back – would it work? Time would tell………………. Mason on for Bee and James Parker swopped for the energetic Player of the day Sam Grouse.

Bit like the 1st half but now we’re clearing our lines cleanly and generally keeping control of the ball – Oadby attack down the right flank good long ball Harvey to Kuda to Serge Header no end product. Good pressing from Euan but no support in the box – Throw in to Oadby – the best we can do at the moment – Nice flick Kuda and a snap chance for Mason WIDE! Chester tells me ‘it’s coming!’. HNC attack- Mason blocks – we move the ball crossfield – Serge, Harvey, Kuda. Free kick HNC who are working hard and our lone female supporter cries ‘c’mon Oadby!’ Hear Hear!

More attacking from HNC but we are pressing better now Kuda into the box on the right hand side – Harvey unmarked at the back but a shot on goal is pushed out by their keeper for a corner – Excellent delivery by Alex – Euan met it powerfully – GOAL! 1-1 Hip Hip Horray we’re BACK in it!

Free kick greens – Over the bar from 30 yards and still rising as it hit the trees – The Oadby boys have now got the ‘keep ball habit’ We attack – Handball Free Kick! Kuda steps up and some would say found the bottom corner beautifully to make it 2-1 (The more mean spirited would suggest that the deflection off the wall wrong footed the keeper and would refer the goal to the ‘Dubious Goal Committee’ but what the heck a goals a GOAL and we’re in FRONT!)

Now we’re playing better football. Good pressure and good passing. We’re beginning to control the midfield, stringing passes together. Corner to us, back to Alex, effort – Good interception Harry. Whilst the football had gotten a bit more exciting there was still time to compare and contrast the Linesmen styles – HNC crisp arm movements and stiff flagging, Shane – not so much style but decisive and correct!

Anyway not long to go – writers cramp is coming – Back to the action for the final few minutes and what a lot happened! Free kick to greens for a foul – Hmmm! Unfortunately a long flighted ball dipped over our keeper to make it 2-2 – The home supporters jumped for joy!

Kick off and we attack – Late challenge on Serge foul Free Kick led to a corner and another good delivery by Alex – Melee in the box and the ball was dropping to Harvey who was floored – PENALTY! Kuda steps up and slots confidently and comfortably past the keeper 3-2 Oadby C’mon!!! Managerial switch back to 4 at the back – Time to close out the game boys.

Another Oadby attack JP/Euan/JP/Serge through ball for Euan to run onto The goal is beckoning …..HNC last defender managed a challenge but fouled Euan –another PENALTY! Sadly the Referee had to apply the letter of the law and the lad got a red card. Under guidance from Chester Kuda passed the pen to Euan who slotted home and 4-2 Oadby was the score – Somewhat flattering me thinks.

Almost there but time for Lois to check the Referee had got it correct – Surely a Red card was a consequence of 2 yellows? – Someone is paying attention Mrs well done! Quick substitution Harvey off Bee on – Final whistle blown 100% continues but the performance needs work!

Squad: Josh Hurst, Harrison Norton, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd, Sam Grouse, Sergio Dhillon, James Parker, Bradie Perkins, Jordie Burke, Mason Smith, Bee Sandhu, Alex Hobart, Kuda Muskwe, Christian Farrar, Euan Ford

Player of the Day: Sam Grouse

Goals Scorers: Euan Ford (2) and Kuda Muskwe (2)

St Andrews 1 Oadby Owls 2 – 13th November 2011 (District League)

Oadby Owls continued their 100% winning record with a well earned but scrappy performance against St Andrews.

Oadby started brightly when in the 1st minute Euan was through on goal only to see the keeper make a good save down to his right. This attack led to two consecutive corners with the latter being headed over by Carter. For the next 10 minutes Oadby tried to play football but their normal slick passing game eluded them and they kept conceding possession to a battling St Andrews side, and as Oadby continued to give the ball awaySt Andrews grew in confidence.

St Andrews pressed forward and nearly took the lead when a 15th minute corner was well saved on the line by Hadley and the resulting scrambled clearance fell to a St Andrews player who sent a wayward shot over the bar.

Oadby carried on with their poor pattern of play with only a few half chances being created, then in the 31st minute the Oadby defence tried to play the ball out and were caught cold when they lost the ball just outside their area giving the opposing attacker a simple task of slotting the ball past a advancing Hadley to give them a 1-0 half time lead.

The 2nd half started as the 1st half finished with both teams giving the ball away cheaply with neither team able to take a grip on the game. It wasn’t until the 44th minute that Oadby had another site of goal when Rhys rounded the keeper but sliced is shot wide to the disappointment of the Oadby parents. Oadby started to get on top but were still found wanting in the passing department. With time ticking away Rob changed the formation and went to 3 at the back hoping the change would inspire some quality football and it nearly paid off when finally some good passing found Sam on the right whose long range shot went just wide of the left hand post. The Owls grew in confidence and just when an upset looked on the cards a great ball over the top from James in the 63rd minute found Euan one on one with the keeper who kept his cool to make it all square. At last normal service resumed with quality football.

With St Andrews still reeling from the equaliser they conceded a 2nd goal within 60 seconds when Sam beat two players coming in from the right to shoot in to the left hand corner and take us in to a 2-1 lead which for most parts of the game didn’t look like coming. Oadby held out to keep their perfect start to the season intact. A great result again even though it was not our best performance but well done to all the boys for never giving up.

Squad: Hadley Beeken; Josh Hurst, Harrison Norton, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd; Sam Grouse, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson; Euan Ford, James Parker, Bradie Perkins, Jordie Burke, Mason Smith.

Oadby Owls 2 Stourbridge 1 – 19th November 2011 (MJPL)

This week it was the turn of Stourbridge to test the resolve of Oadby Owls as the boys defended their 100% record in all competitions and by jiminy they did!

The morning began a tad damp, cold and dreary but the mood was lifted when the ‘Catering Ladies’ started the Season of Goodwill early and delivered tea and coffee to the home supporters on the touchline – A bacon roll would’ve made it a perfect start so maybe next time…………………………

Anyway, to the action……………………………….

Less than 60 seconds in and our left back for the day decided to play rugby rather than football and gifted Stourbridge a free kick Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! Harvey Judd – Gave away a Penalty last week Hmmmm! Safe Hands Hadley collected the ball with ease from the resulting free kick and then we began to put some moves together down our right hand side. Alex used his pace to great effect and we had an attempt on goal but no success.

The battle for control of midfield was well underway with Jordie and Serge covering the hard yards. Oadby pressed hard and the one consistent aspect was we couldn’t find the back of the net!

To be fair it was all Oadby and here are a few highlights :- Nice interchange of passes on our left side followed by more nice movement on the left side, Super through ball from Alex just a bit too deep, cleared by Stourbridge defence and back at ‘em by our boys. Jordie was taking control of the midfield but our final pass was somewhat lacking.

A corner to Oadby – Rising like a salmon, Harrison was just off target. More pressing from Stourbridge was comfortably dealt with by our starting defence of Harvey, Harrison, Bradie and Josh Hurst who played the ball out nicely creating angles for each other and finding feet – Well done if only we could make that final telling pass!

More midfield stuff and a Serge effort goes over the bar. Then a surge into the box from Christian with no end product but we’re getting closer. More good passing Harry/Harvey/Serge – It’s ALL Oadby. Good movement from Jordie but support was lacking. Euan bursts into the box – another corner! Alex – a great ball – WIDE! Excellent pressing by Jordie closing Stourbridge down in midfield giving them nowhere to go – Pressure by Oadby led to a quick game of head tennis and another corner but no positive outcome.

At this point the crowd decided there was a distinct lack of thermal underwear and we needed something more to warm us up – It came with a swift counter attack from Stourbridge………….. Their right winger skipped past a challenge on our left and put in a great cross – Bit of a fumble in the box and the ball ended up in our net – 0-1 Somewhat against the run of play you could say!

And then virtually straight from kick off we were saved by an excellent offside decision from our resident Linesman Shane. Then another corner followed by a foul on Harrison giving us a Free Kick, nicely taken by Alex and saved by their keeper. And just as I was wondering what to write next the cry went up ‘No Movement’ – Thanks Toke!

Time for a switch – Sam for Alex and Carter for Christian moving Harrison up front. And with only a few mins to halftime we won another 3 corners – If only it was 5aside rules we’d be in front!

More Oadby pressing and again against the run of play Stourbridge attacked and hit the post – cleared away nicely by the defence but a let off all the same!

HALFTIME!

No halftime drinks (Ladies please take note!) but Shane did take a call, we believe, from the Premier League who had a vacancy for a quality Lino in the afternoon.

Anyway the 2nd half began like the 1st half ended with Oadby attacking, attacking, attacking and no end product. More composure needed boys. Kuda was on from the start of the 2nd half but still we couldn’t find the final QUALITY delivery to allow our boys to find the finish our possession deserved.

Still more attacking and shots wide from the 100%ers – It wasn’t looking good but we all know the boys are capable of scoring late and most importantly they know it too.

And then it happened – We managed to knock a great through ball perfectly weighted for Ewan to run onto and finish MAGNIFICNETLY from 30 yards! Unfortunately the Referee blew his whistle for an offside against Kuda (who didn’t receive the ball) before Ewan finished and the initial goal award ended with a Free Kick to Oadby – Confused? You needed to be there!

To say the boys felt a tad aggrieved would be mild BUT it spurred them on and from the resulting free kick we won a corner and up stepped Alex. FANTASTIC delivery met powerfully by Ewan the back of the net felt the full force of a GREAT header 1-1 Hurrah!

Kick off and we won the ball. At last some quality passing finding our own players and into the Stourbridge box with a slap in by Serge 2-1 Hip Hip Hurrah!!!! The crowd went wild jumping up and down and clapping to counteract the cold!

Bit more action to close out the game now – Carters free kick high wide and handsome, more pace down the flank from Alex, quality passing between the defence at last finding an Oadby player, another attack on Stourbridge, Christian took the ball forward and wide, then it was time for Sam to knock the ball wide and at last the Referee blew for FULL TIME – Phew it was over!

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Josh Hurst, Harrison Norton, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd; Sam Grouse, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Euan Ford, Kuda Muskwe, Bradie Perkins, Jordie Burke, Mason Smith, Alex Hobart.

Player of the Day: Mason Smith

Goals Scorers: Euan Ford and Sergio Dhillon

Oadby Owls 3 Blaby & Whetstone 2 – 20th November 2011 (District League)

If yesterday was damp, cold and dreary this morning was damp, cold, dreary AND foggy! To cap it all Al Parker went missing for a 2nd day on the trot (probably lost in the FOG) so fortunately I had my trusty Reporters Pad with me and a few pens – Potentially this home fixture against Blaby & Whetstone was going to pose a fair test of the 100%ers resolve and so it proved. My summary would be that it was a testing game for the Referee on a number of fronts played with full commitment from both sides resulting in the correct eventual outcome but what do I know!

A summary of the action would be thus:-

Good early passing and movement from Oadby with a Rhys effort gathered by the Blaby keeper. Action back at us and Bradie dealt with the threat with a BIG kick out of defence. Hadley & Bee combined well and Oadby continued attacking with Harry and James ‘JP’ Parker. Next it was Blaby’s turn and Hadley dealt competently with the threat. Free kick to Oadby nicely taken by Harrison along the floor and gathered by the Blaby keeper.

Then a MASSIVE kick from the Blaby keeper and it was back in our Penalty Area! More attacking from our boys and good strength in the midfield ding dong. Harry knocked the ball to Mason who passed to Alex for an effort on goal saved by the Blaby keeper. JP was nearly in for the rebound.

Foul on Sam Grouse – Great battling and a shot on goal by JP saved comfortably by the competent Blaby keeper. Nice tackle Bee – End to end stuff – Blaby look organised and pose a fair test.

Long ball from our defence, flick on from Harry to Sam just offside.

Harry flick to Mason, James great work turning players down the left side and the resulting cross fell just behind Harrison – Back to Blaby attacking and a GREAT block by Jordie results in a Blaby corner. Dealt with by the defence and then a long ball from Jordie to JP who took a sharp effort on goal saved by the Blaby keeper and Sam couldn’t quite get to the rebound. A pattern was developing here!

Free Kick Oadby and Harrison had another effort on goal pushed out by the Blaby keeper BUT this time JP was in on the rebound and slotted home to make it a deserved 1-0 Hurrah!

Alex put his pace to good use down the wing and played a nice ball into Sam but the Blaby defence dealt with the threat.

Suddenly it was 2-0 (But I had turned to watch the Leicester girls match!) Back to our game…………. still 1-0 here.

Nice work by Rhys down the other flank and a fair contest was developing with Blaby pressing well defended by Mason and Bee. Melee in our box resulted in a corner to Blaby – A good delivery and a header Goal 1-1 Hmmm!

Blaby attacked again immediately from KO but the defence stood firm with Bradie putting in a powerful performance in the centre and Carter mopping up the bits and pieces. Good play but we need a quicker release. Another Blaby attack down the centre cleared up the central partnership. Lovely play between Serg and Sam but not quite getting through and then it happened – 2 days in succession – A Blaby player burst onto a through ball and finished to make it 1-2 He was given offside but overruled by the Referee and so we’re behind and feeling aggrieved BUT then again you know how our boys can raise their game!

HALF TIME 1-2 Blaby & Whetstone in front

2nd Half began and straight from kick off Harrison passed to JP who moved the ball to Sam Grouse who hit a nonchalant shot against the underside of the crossbar – Unfortunately the linesman wasn’t Russian and the score remained 1-2.

More pressure by Oadby with good passing and movement – Serge to Rhys ball into the box and a Harrison header just over the bar. At this point I had moved to gain a better view from the other side of the pitch. Safe Hands pulled off a save and JP had an effort saved by their keeper. And then the game stopped for a min or so as the Referee dealt with some errant parents. As a consequence I had to walk back to my original spot – I don’t like using that many calories up! Anyway the intermission got Oadby to regroup, won a corner, Sam Grouse delivered the ball, Serge got his nose in the way of the Blaby keeper and Bradie stooped to power in a low header 2-2 Hurrah!

We were still celebrating when Hadley pulled off a GREAT save thwarting another Blaby attack. Nice and simple passing and moving from our boys Rhys/Sam/Alex but Blaby were threatening and the rearranged defence of Harvey, Carter, Bradie and Josh Hurst stood firm seeing the ball out when threatening our lines.

The game got a little scrappy but we still pressed for the decisive goal and then all of a sudden we heard that familiar sound of boot on boot and Harrison had won a penalty – No complaints from the Blaby boys. JP took responsibility and slotted past the Blaby keeper – Nice pen! 3-2 Hip Hip Hurrah!

Blaby pressed and again the defence stood firm – Some throw in shenanigans and a defensive switch bringing on Bee on the left and moving Harvey to Right Back. More back at ‘em from Oadby but we lacked a little composure in front of goal. And then Blaby were at us but we stood firm.

Less than 5 mins to go and Alex had an attempt on goal (or was it a cross?) either way it had the Blaby keeper back peddling and punching out for a corner as the ball threatened to drop into the net.

Time to take the corner and then the Referee blew for FULL TIME – The winning streak continues. We were tested physically but showed great determination and application WELL DONE boys!

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Josh Hurst, Harrison Norton, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd, Sam Grouse, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, James Parker, Bradie Perkins, Jordie Burke, Mason Smith, Bee Sandhu, Alex Hobart.

Player of the Day: Harrison Norton

Goals Scorers: James Parker (2) and Bradie Perkins

Burton Colts 1 Oadby Owls 3 – 12th November 2011 (MJPL)

The Oadby juggernaut rolled into Burton and left with another 3 points after a 3-1 victory which maintained the Owls 100% MJPL winning record for the season.

Oadby were on the attack from the start and took the lead after 5 minutes. A well delivered corner from Sam was met by Mason who rose above the Burton defence to head home from close range.

The Owls continued to put pressure on Burton and a cross into the area from Alex found Christian unmarked but his glancing header from 12 yards out was narrowly wide.

Next it was Kuda that found himself through on goal but a Burton defender did well to force him wide and his shot was off target.

Mason then had a shot blocked and the rebound fell to Sam but his effort on goal went over the bar.

Euan went on a good run with the ball and slipped it through to Kuda but his shot was well saved by the Burton keeper low down to his right.

A long clearance from Hadley resulted in a route one opportunity as Kuda went through one on one but his shot was saved by the legs of the advancing Burton keeper.

A good ball from Alex found Euan in the box who got his shot on target but the Burton keeper again made a good save and held onto the ball well.

Half time: Burton Colts 0 Oadby Owls 1

Oadby started the second half by taking the game to Burton and doubled their lead almost immediately. Sam was played in on the right and his ball back to Alex was squared across goal to the far post where Rhys finished with a curling right foot shot off the underside of the crossbar.

Chances so far for Burton had been scarce with Sergio holding well in midfield and the ever reliable Owls defence of Alex, player of the day Bradie, Carter, Bee, Harrison & Harvey rebuffing any attacks on the Oadby goal.

Burton then gave the Owls a scare when a shot from 25 yards took a deflection off Harrison but hit the post rather than finding the net.

Sam nearly extended the Owls lead when he held off a defender but his shot to the near post found the side netting.

Burton came back at Oadby with two long range efforts but both were comfortably saved by Hadley.

The Owls made the game safe with a 3rd goal when a free-kick into the area was missed by a Burton defender and Jordie capitalised by taking the ball in his stride and finished with a powerful shot from 15 yards.

Despite this setback Burton kept going and won a penalty for a foul by Harvey in the box. The spot-kick was coolly despatched to reduce the arrears for Burton.

Oadby could have made the score more convincing in the closing minutes. A turn from James in the Burton area allowed him to square for Euan whose shot was deflected just wide. Then another James run down the right resulted in a cross which found Rhys arriving late at the far post but his goalbound shot was blocked by a Burton defender.

Archdales 73 2 Oadby Owls 3 – 5th November 2011 (MJPL)

Table topping Oadby had another early Saturday morning start as they travelled to Worcester to face mid table Archdales 73.

The Owls made it 8 wins on the trot after coming from behind to win 3-2 in a thrilling game against an Archdales side who played very well in an entertaining match.

Oadby started brightly and took the game to Archdales. The Owls were using the open space of the wide pitch particularly well on the right side in the early stages. Oadby created a few half chances but were unable to deliver the final ball or apply the killer finish to break the deadlock.

Archdales started to grow in confidence as the game progressed and it was the home side that took the lead midway through the first half. One of their central midfielders won a crunching 50/50 challenge in the Oadby half and then played a throughball to their striker who made no mistake with his finish from just inside the box.

Oadby were rocked by this setback and struggled to reassert their early superiority on the game. The Owls fell further behind shortly before the interval when they failed to track a run into the area from the dangerous Archdales striker. When the ball was crossed into the Oadby box the unmarked forward was there to finish well for his second goal which doubled Archdales lead.

Half time: Archdales 73 2 Oadby Owls 0

The second half started with a formation change for Oadby as they switched to 3-5-2 from 4-4-2 (managerial masterstroke!) and the Owls were determined to get back into the game. Now playing down the slope Oadby were dominating the match but Archdales were proving difficult to break down and were not going to surrender their lead without a fight.

After a spell of pressure the Owls finally got the goal they deserved when Rhys squared a ball across the box and Alex reacted the quickest to beat the hesitant Archdales keeper to the ball and finish neatly at the near post from 4 yards out.

The goal gave Oadby the lift they needed and they levelled the match soon after when Owls player of the day Euan swung in a deep corner to the far post which Carter managed to bundle home as the Archdales defence desperately tried to clear.

The Owls were now in the ascendency and looked the more likely team to win the game but Archdales would not lie down in a match that they had lead for so long. As the game entered the final minute it looked like a draw was going to be the final outcome until a misplaced square pass from James fell to Mason who hit a tremendous looping shot from 25 yards over the keeper and into the Archdales net for an Oadby winner at the death.

Full time: Archdales 73 2 Oadby Owls 3The winning run continues but we left it very late today to keep our 100% record for the season intact.

Squad: Hadley Beeken; Josh Hurst, Carter Gill, Harrison Norton, Harvey Judd; Sam Grouse, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson; James Parker, Euan Ford; Jordie Burke, Alex Hobart, Mason Smith.

Rubery 0 Oadby Owls 1 – 29th October 2011 (MJPL)

Top of the table Oadby travelled to Wythall, South Birmingham to play Rubery on a clear and crisp autumn morning. The Owls managed to make it 7 MJPL wins out of seven with a 1-0 victory in what was a hard fought and competitive match.

The starting Oadby midfield of Jordie, Christian, Niam & player of the day Rhys took an early grip of the game and the Owls were the dominant side in the first half but could not convert their chances. Euan forced a smart save from the Rubery goalkeeper and from the resulting corner a shot on the turn from Rhys hit the underside of the bar and was cleared to safety. James was then set up inside the area by a square ball from Jordie but his shot was straight at the keeper with the goal beckoning. The Rubery goal was leading a charmed life as Kuda’s downward header from a Sam corner bounced into the ground and up against the bar before again being cleared by the home defence. When Rubery went on the attack the pace of their main striker was a cause for concern but the Owls ever reliable defence of Josh, Carter, Harrison & Sergio were on hand to repel any threat, with the safe hands of Hadley in goal also there as back up if needed.

Half time: Rubery 0 Oadby Owls 0

The pattern of the second half was much the same as the first with Oadby pushing forward looking for the breakthrough. The Owls midfield and defence was still looking solid with Alex and Bradie fitting seamlessly into the back four after the break. Oadby eventually took a deserved lead midway through the second period when a throughball from Sam sent Kuda clear on goal who finish well after holding off the challenge of a chasing defender. A few minutes later Kuda had a second goal which would have doubled the Owls lead and settled the match controversially ruled out for offside. Rubery did their utmost to get back on level terms but the Oadby defence would not yield. The Owls closed out the game including 8 minutes of injury time to claim the 3 points without too many problems.

Leicester Nirvana 1 Oadby Owls 2 – 23rd October 2011 (District League)

Sunday 23rd October – A balmy afternoon, fitting for the anticipated heat of a Top of the Table clash between Oadby Owls and Leicester Nirvana. However, before the action started we witnessed a full and complete Pitch inspection by the Referee including the Corner Flags which incidentally failed his initial test!

It was also marvellous to see a FULL turnout of supporting Oadby Owls Mums and Dads albeit it has to be said that the ladies were having a day off from their usual catering duties and so there were no refreshments!!! – Maybe next time?

And so to the match………………………………a summary would be that the match was well contested by both sides and the eventual outcome was the right result however, my recollection, enhanced by Simon Hobarts running commentary would go thus :-

The early exchanges were fairly focussed down the Oadby left hand side but the defence stood firm with, amongst others, Rhys blocking a Nirvana attempt on goal. Nirvana continued pressing and Bradie cleared yet another attack. Suddenly an opening for Oadby…………….a tremendous through ball to James allowed the ever busy JP to attack the Nirvana goal and whilst not successful with his attempt, the rebound fell to Euan who turned and finished sharply – 1 nil to the boys in Black & White – The away crowd went WILD!

Almost immediately from the kickoff, Nirvana attacked down the middle but were again repelled by the ever busy Central partnership of Harrison and Bradie. Back to the other end with Sam playing a nice ball into Euan who got a smart shot away but didn’t trouble the Nirvana ‘keeper. Unlike the next Nirvana attack which brought a fine save from ’Safe Hands’ Hadley.

The boys put together some excellent attacking play down both flanks with good passing interchanges and excellent teamwork but unfortunately no positive end product. Whilst at times open and end to end stuff, the battle for midfield was well underway and being contested rigorously by both sides. After 15 mins the Oadby defence failed to deal with a long ball down the middle by Nirvana and the softest of goals was conceded – 1-1. The away crowd were less than impressed!

Emboldened by this equaliser Nirvana pressed and for a short while it was all hands to defence and a melee in the Oadby box brought a phenomenal block from Niam – well done Mister!

Oadby replied with more attacking football, and the irrepressible James headed just over the bar. And at the other end with Safe Hands getting busier than we would’ve liked, the battle for control of midfield continued. Whilst not all one way by any stretch, we had our fair share of chances – Rhys clipping the Nirvana crossbar after a great move by Sergio and Niam.

Any pressure from Nirvana was comfortably dealt with by the starting Back Four of Harvey, Bradie, Harrison and Alex – Well defended boys! 28 mins gone and time for Oadby subs – Mason on for Niam and Carter on for Harrison.

More pressing by Oadby led to a shot over the bar by Rhys and a discussion about Pants and Fruit on the sideline? Fortunately the action continued to entertain on the pitch. Once more Safe Hands was called into action just before the half time whistle. Still 1-1.

The 2nd half began with a great move down the Nirvana left flank – The ever mobile Alex to JP to Euan and a sharp save by the busy Nirvana ‘keeper. More end to end stuff now, Nirvana over the Oadby bar followed by an excellent offside decision by Referees Assistant Shane and another Hadley save. JP then decided to show footwork more akin to a dance competition and a corner resulted. Bit of parental back chat at this point (you know who you are – just because Rob was on the other side of the pitch don’t think it went unnoticed!)

More action and then on 12 mins Sergio burst past 2 Nirvana defenders and the resulting melee in the Nirvana box allowed JP to finish smartly – 2-1 Oadby and the Away Crowd got a little carried away!

The next point of note was the Bradie booking – Time to sort yourselves out boys pocket money is hard earned and not to be wasted on daft bookings – Personal note here though congratulations Bradie for making a point of shaking hands with the Referee at the end of the match.

Back to the action and more Midfield battling. The highlight being a long kick by the Nirvana ’keeper which went straight out for a goal kick to Oadby – IMPRESSIVE!

More defensive duties for our boys led to a foul on Harvey and yet another intervention by Hadley. A niggling tackle by Nirvana led to a verbal outburst missed by the referee – Mind your language boys – Mums and Dads on the sideline!

More Oadby attacking but we really must ensure we find our players and make the most of hard won possession. Nirvana attacked and the busy Hadley was involved again. Next we’re on the offensive – an awful challange on Euan resulted in a free kick on goal and in no time the ball was back in the Oadby Area!

2 mins to go and after a nice move Euan rounded the Nirvana ‘keeper and almost finished the contest but the ball found the side netting.Nearly there but still enough time for a Nirvana Corner which brought a PHENOMENAL one handed save from Hadley and yet another corner for Nirvana. At this point the crowd were delighted to see Oadby clear their lines and the next action was a double booking for Nirvana players involved in a goal line scuffle – 2 yellow cards to Nirvana. Well done Referee – we were watching the ball some 30 yards away and missed the incident!

Final Whistle Nirvana 1 – Oadby Owls 2

A magnificent team performance and a hard fought result – The boys withstood the long balls and when they put their passing together they look GOOD – Well Done everyone, including the unused players on the day who gave their wholehearted support to the team.

Sheffield Wednesday Development 2 Oadby Owls 2 – 17th October 2011 (Friendly)

Oadby were invited up to Sheffield Wednesday FC’s training ground just down the road from their Hillsborough ground to play a match against their development squad. The game was played over three 20 minute periods on a small 3G pitch on a wet and windy October evening.

When the match kicked off the Owls (Oadby) immediately knew that they were up against quality opposition as Sheffield gave them no time at all to settle on the ball with their high tempo pressing game. Sheffield took an early lead when one of their players broke from midfield to fire an unstoppable 25 yard shot into the top corner. For the remainder of the first period Oadby worked hard trying to get back on level terms but were mainly under pressure from a confident Sheffield team.

End of period 1: Sheffield Wednesday 1

Oadby Owls 0Oadby started period two brightly and managed to carve out a few half chances but it was Sheffield who doubled their lead when they broke out of defence and their player on the right flank scored with a cross shot which found the far bottom left corner of the Owls net. Oadby continued to work hard in an effort to get back into the game but Sheffield were proving to be a hard nut to crack and on a couple of occasions went close to further extending their lead.

End of period 2: Sheffield Wednesday 2 Oadby Owls 0

Oadby started the last period in determined mood and it turned out to be a memorable one for the boys. They worked tirelessly and also kept their shape which enabled them to pull a goal back when Kuda challenged the Sheffield goalkeeper for the ball and it fell to Euan on the edge of the area who didn’t hesitate to hit a powerful shot into the Wednesday net. Oadby were finishing the game strongly and sensed they could get something from the match. With only a few minutes remaining the Owls were rewarded for their endeavour with an equalising goal from Niam when he smashed a shot from 18 yards into the bottom right corner of the Sheffield goal. The delight of the players, manager and parents was evident as Oadby maintained their unbeaten record in all matches played so far this season. Oadby continued press after the equaliser and had chances to win the game outright, but given the quality of the opposition, the driving wind and rain which was prominent throughout, the team did themselves proud and were deserving of the draw.

End of period 3 (full time): Sheffield Wednesday 2 Oadby Owls 2

Oadby gave a good account of themselves on the night in what was a valuable learning exercise. All the boys got a good run out and they all played their part in achieving a decent result, which made it an enjoyable night despite the foul weather. Bring on Leicester Nirvana this Sunday!

Player of the Day: A very creditable squad performance

Goals Scorers: Euan Ford and Niam Morar

Oadby Owls 2 WBA – Shrewsbury DC 1 – 15th October 2011 (MJPL)

Oadby continued their winning streak after edging to a sixth consecutive victory in the Midland Junior Premier League against a good Shrewsbury DC side. In the early exchanges there was plenty of effort from both sides as they tried hard to gain the upper hand in the game. From the Owls point of view the first half was a bit of a disappointment as they failed to move the ball quickly enough to play the expansive brand of football which had been displayed in previous weeks. Possession was given away to often and the final ball was not finding its target. Some credit must go to Shrewsbury who made it difficult for Oadby and were the best MJPL opposition the Owls have faced so far this season.

Despite Oadby not playing as fluently as they would have liked their defence of Josh, Bradie, Carter, Harrison & player of the day Harvey was still looking solid. It was the Owls who took the lead on 25 mins when Harvey and Rhys combined well down the left, allowing Harvey the room to deliver a quality ball into the box which was finished well by James after the Shrewsbury defence failed to clear.

Half time: Oadby Owls 1 Shrewsbury DC 0

After some words of encouragement from the coaching team at half time the Owls made a much brighter start to the second half. They were immediately rewarded with a 2nd goal when Sam finished with a low shot into the corner from 12 yards after good work down the left from James.

Confidence was now growing for Oadby with Jordie, Sergio, Christian & Mason controlling the midfield. Euan & Kuda in attack were a real handful for the Shrewsbury defence and it looked like the Owls might finish off the match in style. However, Shrewsbury had other ideas and they halved the deficit on 55 mins when Oadby lost possession in their own half and were punished by a well taken goal from the vistors.

In the end the Owls were happy to hang on to their lead and claim the 3 points. The lead was preserved at the death when Hadley had to make a smart save from a glancing Shrewsbury header which could have found the net to level the scores

.Squad: Hadley Beeken, Bradie Perkins, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd, Jordie Burke, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, James Parker, Harrison Norton, Kuda Muskwe, Sam Grouse, Rhys Robinson, Euan Ford, Josh Hurst, Mason Smith.

Oadby Owls 15 GNG Juniors 1 – 9th October 2011 (District League)

Right from the start Oadby put GNG under pressure with three early chances but the deadlock was broken in the 10th minute when Mason crossed from the left to James who coolly finished to open the scoring. After this it was one way traffic with the 2nd goal coming from a Harvey corner that was finished by Mason. Owls continued with the pressure and scored two goals in quick succession one from Rhys and another by James to make it 4-0. GNG Continued to battle and held out for 12 minutes before Rhys made it 5-0 to take us in to half time.

Within 2 minutes off the re-start Oadby had scored two more goals through James and Rhys to both claim their hat tricks and make it 7-0. The 8th goal came when Alex made a great run down the right with the resulting cross being steered in by James to bag his 4th , goal number 9 quickly followed when another good Alex crossed was turned in by the GNG defender. Then with nearly all the defence pushing forward Oadby were caught cold when GNG had their first attack and conceded a sloppy goal to make the the score 9-1.

Oadby resumed normal service with a goal from Alex and then Mason made it 11-1 with the game’s best goal when the ball went in off the post with a well hit shot from 25 yards. Goal number 12 came when the ball fell to Christian on the edge of the box who dispatched into the net with another well taken strike. With time ticking on to full time Oadby were not finished James grabbed his 5th with another well struck finish and Rhys notched his 4th when he scored from a corner to make it 14 -1 .

Owls final goal came when Josh made a surging run down the right and provided a pin point cross for Alex to power home . The game finished when the Ref blow up to what looked like a serious injury to Alex’s wrist but after a trip to A&E turned out to be a bad sprain and luckily nothing more. Well done everyone, a solid disciplined performance.

Oadby Owls 4 AFC Worcester Olympic 0 – 8th October 2011 (MJPL)

Oadby went into today’s match knowing that this would be their toughest test in the MJPL to date. The League’s seeding policy will now ensure that teams assessed of similar ability will be paired against each other in determining who reaches the Play-Off stages next year.

Oadby proved themselves to be well up for this game maintaining the momentum, skill and desire from the training environment into the match itself. Oadby delivered a powerful performance throughout the entire game and many of those watching passed positive comments on the team’s display. Up front the ever impressive Kuda got a brace as Oadby went into half time 2-0 to the good.

The half time team talk was the briefest yet as the coaching and management team could only ask for more of the same and sure enough that’s what they got. The second half saw Oadby have the upper hand for the majority of the period. Worcester gave a determined display but on this performance did not appear to have the strength in depth that Oadby currently possess.

Kuda forced home a goal to complete his hat-trick and send him to the top of the MJPL goalscorers list and Euan struck a well deserved goal that capped a very determined performance

.Squad: Hadley Beeken, Alex Hobart, Bradie Perkins, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd, Jordie Burke, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, Harrison Norton, Kuda Muskwe, Sam Grouse, Rhys Robinson, Euan Ford, Niam Morar, Mason Smith.

Gilmorton Juniors 1 Oadby Owls 11 – 2nd October 2011 (County Cup)

After a slow start Oadby took the lead on 12 minutes with a rising shot by Sergio after good work by Ewan on the right. Three minutes later a rocket shot from Niam form the edge of the area made it 2-0 after good perseverance from Sergio.

On 21 minutes Gilmorton were correctly awarded a penalty which they converted. Oadby continued to dominate the rest of the first half with James having an effort cleared off the line.

Into the second half and Christian had a free kick brilliantly tipped over by the keeper the first of many saves he was to make this half. On 40 minutes Alex slipped James in for a cool finish. On 52 minutes Alex scored himself with a low shot across the keeper. Three minutes later Sergio converted his 2nd goal.

On 62 minutes pressure by Sergio resulted in an own goal. Three minutes from time James scored a carbon copy of his first goal followed a minute later by a goal from Euan shooting across the keeper.

In the last minute Sam converted an excellent half volley followed immediately by a James header from a Christian corner to complete his hat trick.

In stoppage time Sergio completed his hat trick with a simple finish after a flowing move involving Christian and Rhys.

Message received from Gilmorton manager;

“Hi Rob, just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know how impressed we all were with your players last weekend.

Undoubtedly as individuals, their skill level was excellent, but even more impressive for me was their discipline, sense of fair play and teamwork – something you have obviously had a big influence on. Congratulations and good luck for the rest of the season”.

Oadby Owls 6 Oxford City 2 – 1st October 2011 (MJPL)

The Owls maintained their 100% winning record in the Midland Junior Premier League with a convincing 6-2 victory at home to Oxford City. After a confident start it took Oadby about 10 minutes to make the breakthrough. When the ball was played into the box two half chances were not taken but the Oxford defence failed to clear and Harrison was there to finish well from 6 yards out. Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Kuda made a strong run into the penalty area, he battled his way to the byline and pulled the ball back for James on the six yard line to hit home on the half volley.

The Owls were dominating the game and could have extended their lead further but as it turned out they allowed Oxford back into the match after 25 minutes when the defence didn’t manage to clear their lines and Oxford scored with a low shot into the corner giving Hadley no chance of making a save. H-T: 2-1

Oadby did extend their lead right at the beginning of the second half when Sam was well placed at the back post to convert a quality deep cross by Rhys from the left. It was 4-1 soon after when the Owls had a free-kick outside the right side of the area. It was quick thinking from Sam when he slid the ball square to Niam just inside the box and he turned and shot in one movement to the far bottom corner of the net.

Oxford kept going and again pulled a goal back when Oadby lost possession in the midfield and were punished when an Oxford player smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 25 yards. The Owls continued to press forward and made the score 5-2 when Kuda put the Oxford defence under pressure and they could not clear the danger. The ball eventually fell to Euan who steered it into the far corner from 12 yards. The result was capped with a sixth Oadby goal from Kuda when he finished another cross from Rhys on the left from close range.

Rushall Olympic (Walsall) 0 Oadby Owls 4 – 24th September 2011 (MJPL)

With an early start and a pleasant drive we arrived bright and early at the opposition ground in Walsall, the pitch was a little on the rough side and was bound to cause some errors.

The first half kicked off and the Oadby put Rushall under pressure. Great effort in the mid field kept possession with Oadby.

Nine minutes in after some creative movement by Harvey putting the ball through to Harrison (Birthday Boy) who crossed finding Kuda who put the ball away for a well worked goal.

Kuda continued to harass the opposition creating opportunities with some great passes into the box that didn’t quite make it into the back of the net. Rushall responded with some long passing balls putting us under pressure in the 10yrd box with an opportunity that looked like an open Goal except for Bradie on the line with his head giving a great clearance. The solid defensive line ensured that Rushall failed to enjoy any further notable opportunities.

The second half saw Oadby continue the pressure on Rushall who made a quick break that Harrison with some great pace covered off and stopped in its tracks, a great clearance from Christian in the 22yd box out to Jordie on the wing who carried the ball forward slotting nicely through to Kuda who with some deft footwork and skill walked the ball nearly to the line and with a flourish clipped it across the goal mouth into the rear upper corner.

With a continuation of the passing work plenty of opportunities where being created by the Jordie and Kuda partnership and following a shot that the Rushall goalie spilled Christian was there and pushed the ball neatly in for Oadby’s third.

The final goal again from the Jordie Kuda partnership with Jordie passing and putting Kuda through who then had his work cut out and with some nimble footwork and persistence managed to hit the back of the net.

A great result with three goals in the second half achieved through some excellent team work.

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Bradie Perkins, Carter Gill, Harrison Norton, Harvey Judd, Jordie Burke, Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Euan Ford, Kuda Muskwe, Alex Hobart, Sam Grouse, Josh Hurst, Bee Sandhu, Niam Morar

Player of the Day: Harvey Judd

Oadby Owls 2 Birstall United 1 – 18th September 2011 (District League)

Oadby’s winning streak continued following a tough match against Birstall United, which featured Kuda Muskwe who plays for Oadby in their MJPL side on Saturday’s. Oadby anticipated a tough match and the game did not disappoint. The team managed to play some neat attractive football throughout the game.

With only 5 minutes gone there was some excellent defending from Josh Hurst in which he pushed the ball forward and beat two Birstall players. Having passed it on to Zac there was some neat one touch football with Niam and Harrison which resulted in a corner. From the subsquent corner, which was drilled in by Sam, Harrison neatly headed the ball into the back of the net.

A few minutes later a good free kick from Carter, flicked on by Mason, saw Zac score, but unfortunately the referee blew for a very contentiousness offside decision. Oadby were by far the stronger team and Birstall were finding it difficult to break through Oadby’s defence.

Against the run of play Birstall were awarded a very fortunate penalty when Josh Hurst and a Birstall player bumped into each other. Both players stumbled ever so slightly and to the amazement of all concerned a penalty was awarded. Kuda smashed home the penalty so hard that the net was ripped from its hooks!

Oadby were not detered and brilliant football continued to be played. The ball was passed between Bradie, Bee, Carter and Josh into midfield. In midfield Niam and Mason controlled the centre, with Sam and Harrison out wide. Some good footwork by Sam saw him take a shot on goal, which was blocked but followed up by James, who’s shot was saved by Birstall’s keeper. A poor tackle on Mason saw him carried off the field just before half time with Christian replacing him. The subsequent x-ray on Mason’s foot showed that it had not been broken as had been suspected by medical staff.

After the half time break Oadby continued to play attractive football and stood up well to the physicality of the contest. A superb ball from James saw Rhys strike a volley with his left foot. With the Birstall keeper beaten the ball missed the post by inches. Another attacking move saw James slot the ball to Sam, who shot, causing the Birstall keeper to scramble the ball for an Oadby corner.

A long clearance from Birstall saw a spectacular shot hit the top of Oadby’s cross bar. Christian played a superb through ball to Zac who narrowly missed in his attempt to lob the keeper. A great cross-field ball from Umaid on the right found Harrison in the penalty area and he clinically punished Birstall in the dying seconds of the game, for a deserved victory.

Although Harrison managed to bag a brace an exceptional performance by Bradie in his man marking of Kuda saw him rewarded with the Player of the Day trophy (although Sam forgot to bring it!)

Shirley Town 0 Oadby Owls 4 – 17th September 2011 (MJPL)

The Owls made it two wins out of two in the Midland Junior Premier League with what turned out to be a comfortable 4-0 victory away at Shirley Town.

It was a well contested first half but both sides struggled to stamp their authority on the game with too many passes failing to find their target. Oadby were slightly the more dominant team but they could not make the breakthrough before half-time.

Half time: Shirley Town 0 Oadby Owls 0

From the start of a the second half it was evident that the Owls wanted to do better than they had done in the first period. An early 2nd half goal was headed in neatly at the near post by Harrison when he connected with an in-swinging corner from Christian. Oadby doubled their lead soon after when Kuda was upended in the box and he coolly dispatched the resulting penalty.

Player of the day Alex was making some great runs down the right flank and the Oadby midfield were now totally in control. The defence looked like giving nothing away and Hadley was at hand to make the necessary save if Shirley did manage to get a shot on goal.

The game was made safe when Kuda made a good run down the left, he squared the ball to Niam who then threaded it though to James and he finished well into the bottom left corner of the net. Niam then completed the scoring with a low shot from the edge of the area which also found the bottom left corner of the Shirley goal.

Oadby Owls 3 Hinckley United 1 – 11th September 2011 (District League)

Oadby started the brightest playing some slick passing football on a very blustery day. Sergio was unlucky to hit the post in the opening few minutes after good work down the right hand side from Alex.

They were then rewarded on 10 minutes for their early possession when Sam slotted home the first goal after good work from Zac. Against the run of play Hinckley equalised after a mix up in the Oadby defence. Undeterred by the set back Oadby continued to press with a good effort from Euan and again Sergio was again unlucky not to score after a header went close. Hadley looked solid in goal again and pulled off a great save on the half hour as Hinckley found their feet. The second goal did come when Euan converted a penalty he won for being upended in the box.

Half time 2-1.

The second half started where the first ended, with the Hinckley keeper the busier having to save a goal bound header from Carter’s free kick. Again the breakthrough came from down the right hand side with Zac and Sam combining well for James to go through and coolly slot the ball home.

Hinckley had a spell in the second half where they pressed but with no real end product. Oadby had chances to kill the game off but couldn’t find the net against a defiant Hinckley keeper.

The opposition did have a half chance and had a shot comfortably tipped around the post by Hadley, but with some no nonsense defending from Harrison, Oadby were not going to let their well deserved lead slip and eventually ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.

Player of the Day: Sam Grouse

Oadby Owls 2 Kidderminster Harriers Hawks 1 – 10th September 2011 (MJPL)

Oadby Owls made a winning debut in the Midland Junior Premier League with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Kidderminster Harriers Hawks.

Both teams started brightly as they tried to gain the upper hand during the early exchanges. Oadby were slightly the more dominant team but they failed to take a couple of chances and were punished for this midway through the first half as a Kidderminster player was put through on goal catching the Owls defence square and he finished well from the edge of the area.

Oadby were not to be deterred and got themselves back on level terms before the break when James played a ball through the advancing Kidderminster defence which put Sergio clear on goal and he coolly lifted the ball over the keeper into the net for a deserved equaliser.

Half time: Oadby Owls 1 Kidderminster Harriers Hawks 1

Oadby started the second half as they finished the first by taking the game to the opposition. A corner was won on the left hand side and was swung into the box by Christian. Kidderminster could only half clear the ball and it fell to Bradie who was unmarked and had no hesitation in smashing it hard into the net from 15 yards to give the Owls the lead.

Oadby had got themselves in front and despite player of the day Kuda being a constant problem to the Harriers back line they couldn’t manage to extend their lead. As it turned out a third goal was not required as another solid defensive performance from the Owls made sure that there was no way back into the game for Kidderminster.

Oadby Owls 4 Quorn Juniors (2006) 1 – 4th September 2011 (District League)

Oadby got their league season off to a flying start with a convincing 4-1 win over a good Quorn 2006 side. Both sides started at a fast pace and there was good competition to try to gain the early initiative.

As the first half progressed the Owls started to dominate and they were getting the ball out to the wide areas where space could be found. Oadby were rewarded for this when some good work from Alex & Sam down the right wing led to a cross from the byline being headed in for the opening goal from Rhys.

Half Time: Oadby Owls 1 Quorn 2006 0

After the break the Owls continued to press forward in search of a second goal. An in-swinging corner from the left from Christian was only half cleared by the Quorn defence, the ball fell to James on the right hand corner of the penalty area who stepped inside and scored with a shot to the top left corner of the net to make it 2-0.

With the Oadby defence looking as strong as the midfield & attack it was now going to be difficult for Quorn to get back into the game. Whenever they did threaten the Owls goal, player of the day Hadley was on hand with some excellent saves & handling in the wet conditions. The Owls went on to kill off the game with two further second half goals, the third was a well-placed 6 yard header by Mason after good work again from Sam & Alex on the right. The final Oadby goal came when Christian sent a teasing free-kick into the Quorn goalmouth and Zac was there to glance the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Quorn did manage to pull a goal back when Oadby conceded a penalty in the dying minutes. Bradie picked up a booking as the Owls protests against the decision were deemed too strong by the referee. A lesson should be learnt from this by all the Oadby players as the ref could have cautioned any number of them for dissent.

Full Time: Oadby Owls 4 Quorn 2006 1

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Alex Hobart, Bradie Perkins, Carter Gill, Harvey Judd, Sam Grouse, Mason Smith, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, Zac Adams, James Parker, Christian Farrar, Niam Morar, Josh Hurst, Bee Sandhu.

Oadby Owls 4 Wigston United U13′s 0 – 2nd September 2011 (Friendly)

On the back of such an outstanding performance against the Leicester Schools District side two days earlier Oadby failed to match the tempo and quality of that display. Although the win was never really in doubt the team were far from impressive. Wigston United played some attractive passing football but the age difference was all too obvious. To their credit Wigston United battled away and showed why they are perhaps the best team for their age in Leicester.

Oadby conceded possession far to easily and gave a tired performance. The link up play was not on display and the side lacked the work rate in comparison to the previous outing but still went in to the break 1-0 up through a goal from Euan.

Half time saw several substitutions and an early goal from Sam effectively put the game out of reach of Wigston. Further goals from Kuda (after some good work from James) and another from Euan gave Oadby a deserved win but a performance that was short of the quality the team possesses.

Squad: Hadley Beeken, Euan Ford, Harvey Judd, Sam Grouse, Niam Morar, Sergio Dhillon, James Parker, Kuda Muskwe, Zac Adams, Rhys Robinson, Harrison Norton, Josh Hurst, Christian Farrar, Bradie Perkins, Mason Smith, Alex Hobart and Carter Gill.

Player of the Day: Still thinking about that!

Goals Scorers: Euan Ford (2), Sam Grouse and Kuda Muskwe

Oadby Owls 4 Leicester District Schools 1 – 31st August 2011 (Friendly)

With the start of the 2011-12 season approaching Oadby arranged a testing fixture against the Leicester & District Schools U14′s team prior to the start of their league campaign. From the first whistle the Owls did not disappoint as they dominated a strong District team with some great passing football and were on the attack at every opportunity.

With Oadby players Jordie Burke, Mason Smith, Sergio Dhillon & Rhys Robinson controlling the midfield, the Owls strikeforce of James Parker & Kuda Muskwe were getting plenty of good service up front. James opened the scoring, finishing from close range when he was first to a ball crossed in from the right wing. Kuda added two more goals before half time. Both times he was played through on goal and finished neatly with shots to the bottom left corner of the net.

When the District did threaten the Oadby goal, the Owls defence of Josh Hurst, Carter Gill, Bradie Perkins & Harvey Judd stood firm and repelled their attacks. Goalkeeper Hadley Beeken was also there to thwart them with a very good near post save just before half time.

Half Time: Oadby Owls 3 Leicester & District Schools 0

After the interval the Owls defence with the additions of Alex Hobart & Harrison Norton continued to make it extremely difficult for the Schools side to make inroads on the Oadby goal. Oadby were still winning the midfield battle with Christian Farrar & Niam Morar passing the ball well and creating opportunities for attackers Euan Ford & Zac Adams. Christian made it 4-0 to the Owls midway through the second half with a powerful shot into the top corner from just outside the penalty area.

To their credit, the District team did not let their heads drop and were rewarded for their efforts with a late consolation goal.

Full Time: Oadby Owls 4 Leicester & District Schools 1

Let’s hope that this is the start of a successful season for the Owls in the L & D Sunday Juniors League and the MJPL on Saturdays. The whole Oadby squad can be pleased with their individual and team performances on the night. The missing players – Sam Grouse & Josh Ashman (injured), Umaid Mohammed (unavailable) & Bee Sandhu (selected for the opposition) – will be welcomed back to the squad at the earliest opportunity.

Up the Owls!

1st half line-up: Hadley Beeken, Josh Hurst, Carter Gill, Bradie Perkins, Harvey Judd, Jordie Burke (Christian Farrar), Mason Smith, Sergio Dhillon, Rhys Robinson, James Parker, Kuda Muskwe.

2nd half line-up: Hadley Beeken, Alex Hobart, Bradie Perkins (Carter Gill), Harrison Norton, Harvey Judd (Rhys Robinson), Christian Farrar, Sergio Dhillon (Mason Smith), NiamMorar, Euan Ford, Kuda Muskwe (James Parker), Zac Adams.
