Oadby Owls Hawks v Huncote Sports Greens – 30th September 2012 (Group game)

Hawks secure first win on travels

The Hawks tasted their first away game of the season from home turf and travelled well with their supporters to Huncote on a breezy and somewhat overcast day. Manager Carl Lightfoot was re-instated after successfully passing his FA coaching badge, allowing his assistant coach to return to the back seat and put his feet up;-)

The Hawks had a number of absentees, with happy go lucky stars - Harry and Jenson unable to play due to illness and other commitments. However, the rest of the squad members had plenty of steel and versatility to confront their rivals.

First-Half round-up

The Hawks started the game in fine form immediately taking most of the possession from the whistle and were rewarded for their efforts with Caiden taking the lead with a close range shot in the first two minutes. Kaian then went on one of his mazy runs to add a second. Kaian once again outshined and skillfully teased the defenders only to be tripped outside the box. Harvey the free-kick specialist, stepped-up and contributed another delightful goal.

The Hawks did not ease up with Caiden whipping in a swerving cross from a corner, only to be deflected off a Huncote player into the goal. Ever improving defender Vikram then notched up another goal after receiving a through ball pass to smash it into the bottom left hand corner. Vikram, then converted a penalty after yet another slick move but this time being felled in the penalty box.

There were plenty of chances falling to the likes of Caiden, Finley, Harvey, Kaian, and Sam to extend the lead but Hunote were not giving up and were well rehearsed in preventing further goals with some last ditch challenges.

Gianluca had a quiet opener but still provided wonderful entertainment from the goal line with his antics;-). Connor also played exceptionally well and made some excellent passes and clearances to keep Huncote at bay.

Second-Half round-up

Huncote threatened and upped their tempo in the second half but the Hawks defended well with Connor cutting out the danger. Gianluca also flew himself around in trying to keep a second successful clean sheet. During one magical moment of the game, one of the Huncote players ran from their defence line to the opposition goal but equally Kaian jockeyed the player to run the ball out for a corner. Simply exquisite!!

Striker Finlay then riffled in a long range shot in the top right hand corner. Once again there was no goal celebrations:-( just a glance to the supporters crowd.

Finlay then bagged in another two goals and grabbed his first hat-trick of the season which was well taken with confidence. Sam’s continuous runs and efforts were finally capped by a powerful drive past the keeper. There is no doubt this boy has bags of ability and his attitude is second to none. Kaian ran from a distance yet again, being chased by a defender and then to be foiled by the keeper with his shot. However, Vikram as always followed-up the rebound off the keeper and slotted the ball into the net to record his first hat-trick in the league. Not bad for a defender.

The second half brought great joy for all supporters and neutrals alike to see wonderful football being demonstrated by attacking flair as well as defensive play.

The Hawks now have a respite for their next home game against Glen Villa in two weeks time. Having said that, there is much work to be done in their forthcoming training sessions with an excellent group of players which have the knack to become formidable and promising players!

On a positive note, all the under 7’s Oadby Owls teams enjoyed great games on their travels today.

Player of the Day: Vikram Chandehoke – a great hat-trick and excellent forward runs

Goals Scorers: Caiden Ross (2), Harvey Lightfoot, Finley Piper (3), Kaian Solanki, Sam Connor, Vikram Chandehoke (3)

Oadby Owls Hawks v Lutterworth Lightning – 23rd September 2012 (Group game)

Hawks return to winning ways!

The Hawks recorded their first league victory with a convincing display over Lutterworth Lightning. Weather conditions were treacherous with the rain pelting down but there was no stopping the Hawks who were looking to make amends from their first game. Manager Carl Lightfoot was also absent allowing his trainee assistant manager, to take the realm of managing the Hawks:-)

Debutant Sam, marked his first appearance of the season got off to a flying start on the left wing along with Kaian and Harry marshalling the midfield line with Finley upfront. At the back, there was the Franco Baresi like defender Connor partnered by Caiden who has continued to impress with his energy and drive. That leaves the Italian stallion - Gianluca safe guarding the goal. Harvey, Jenson and Vikram were on the bench.

In the first half, saw a resolute performance from the Hawks, with a number of opportunities to take the lead. The Hawks defended deep in the first ten minutes and slowly edging forward to put pressure on Lutterworth. A double substitution was made seeing Harvey and Vikram coming on for Harry and Caiden respectively. The dead-lock was broken in the first half, when Kaian jinxed towards goal and was fouled just outside the penalty box. Harvey and Finley were standing in position to strike the ball but it was Harvey who approached the ball and struck a sweet free-kick which dazzled the goalkeeper with a fierce shot. Shortly after our hat-trick hero Kaian from the first game, got on the scoresheet taking on the opposition and striking the ball past the keeper.

The Hawks stepped up a gear in the second half with numerous chances falling to Finlay, Jenson, Kaian and Caiden to further the score line. Finley added a third and fourth in quick succession respectively, smashing the ball from the midfield area. His goal celebration is in dire need of some work however;-) Kaian then neatly tucked away another goal. Caiden pushed up in the second half and his sterling performance was rewarded with a marvellous and well taken goal. The icing on the cake was his goal celebration which was very similar to Chelsea's Drogba.

Overall, the Hawks are now showing lots of promise and flair on the pitch encompassed with their team spirit. There were some good performances from Jenson, Vikram and Connor. In particular, Caiden and Gianluca are developing into fine players.

With the first training session just around the corner, the Hawks will look to continue with their fine start and make improvements to their game.

At the end of the game, Kaian handed out sweets to each of his team mates in memory of his beloved grandmother who sadly passed away one year ago. The 23rd of September would have marked her 64th birthday.

Player of the Day: Gianluca Hawksley - a great overall performance

Goals Scorers: Caiden Ross, Harvey Lightfoot, Finlay Piper (2), Kaian Solanki (2)

Oadby Owls Hawks v Desford Blues – 2nd September 2012 (Group game)

Kaian Solanki scores first half hat-trick in nine goal thriller!

With an excellent turnout, both sets of fans were eager to see this match kick-off and what a match it was! Forget El Clasico…

The Hawks looked in great shape after an excellent summer of friendlies and an unbeaten run which they were looking to extend.

The Hawks started off on the back foot and looked rather unfazed with a barrage of attacks by Desford Blues. After conceding two soft goals, the Hawks bounced back in the first half to level two goals a piece, and then take the lead with a two goal advantage.

Kaian Solanki scored a great individual goal from the halfway line followed by another close range shot. Finley Piper then got on the score sheet with a long range effort which flew past the keeper. Kaian Solanki added another just before the end of the first half to turn the game around and at this point the Hawks spirits had returned and were firing on all cylinders. They really should of finished off the game beyond Desford Blues by adding two or three more goals.

Desford Blues came out stronger in the second half and were more likely to score. They were finally rewarded by two goals in quick succession for their efforts. The Hawks also narrowly missed a few opportunities to take the lead and let in another soft goal five minutes before full time.

Nonetheless, the Hawks seemed relatively positive and were looking forward to their next match. Without a question of doubt this was the best game of the season on the opening day! Let’s hope for more of the same.

Player of the Day: Kaian Solanki – the captain’s second hat-trick and played his socks off. His best performance so far…

Goals Scorers: Kaian Solanki (3), Finley Piper (1)
