Hawks in Seventh Heaven!

The Hawks produced by far their best performance since the team was formed when they travelled to Fleckney for this league encounter. On a beautiful morning for football, with an excellent playing surface, the Hawks started well and almost scored from kick off with a sweeping move ending in a near miss. Lucas Ball shot over the bar in 2 minutes but the Hawks had made an impressive start. In 4 minutes Hadley Pinnock-Chase shot just past the post with a Hawks goal looking inevitable. In 6 minutes Kaleem Laaroussi forced a good save from the Fleckney stopper but the first goal soon arrived. In 7 minutes Finn Hamill stooped to nod in from a corner and the Hawks went from strength to strength. Fleckney’s first chance came from a 9th minute corner but the Hawks scrambled it clear. Kaleem almost added a second with a flashing shot over the bar and Finn Hamill almost scored a second header from another corner.

A feature of this match would be the number of chances coming from the Hawks excellent corners. In 14 minutes Hawks scored a deserved second when Hadley Pinnock-Chase sent a terrific left foot shot into the net sparking wild celebrations from the big away support. In 15 minutes Ted Hayter weaved his way through the entire Fleckney defence and shot just past the post. What a goal it would have been!  In 18 minutes Hadley Pinnock –Chase  – a thorn in Fleckney’s flesh throughout - cracked in a superb third. Hawks started the second half as they finished the first with a series of chances before Alex Gallo made it 4-0 with a close range, typical striker’s goal, after a scramble. In 14 minutes Kaleem made it 5-0 and Finn Hamill made it 6 in 15 minutes with a well struck drive. A spirited Fleckney team, who never gave up, almost scored with 4 minutes left. Hadley Pinnock-Chase completed the scoring for the Hawks and reached his own outstanding hat-trick with 2 minutes remaining.

This was a performance to savour, a great all round display with every single player emerging with credit. After the cup defeat a week earlier this was just the tonic needed for the team, coach Eddie Hayter and the loyal travelling support. It also proved that Hayter’s Heroes can be a force to be reckoned with if they keep up this kind of form.

Riverside Kestrels 5 Oadby Owls Hawks 0 - 7th October 2012 (County Cup)

Hawks lose County Cup tie

The Hawks were defeated in the County Cup second round stage by a strong Riverside outfit. On a misty Sunday morning on quite a tight pitch the Hawks started brightly enough but fell behind in the 4th minute when a long range 20 yard shot found its way into the net. This was quickly followed by a scrappy second goal for Riverside on the rebound after a great save by keeper Marek Adamowickz. Hawks had some chances but lacked a little confidence in front of goal and were perhaps not tackling aggressively enough against a good Riverside team. In the 16th minute the Hawks fell 3 behind although just before the half time interval they almost reduced the deficit when Kaleem Laaroussi shot just past the post. The half time score of 3-0 was a touch harsh on the Oadby team.

Riverside increased the lead to 4-0 just 2 minutes into the second half and that probably ended any hopes of a comeback. From that point Riverside were in control of the match although the Hawks never let their heads drop at any stage and gave it 100% effort throughout. 9 minutes into the second half Riverside found the net again to complete the scoring. Just before full time Lucas Ball almost got a deserved goal back for the Hawks but his effort was saved by the Riverside keeper.

This was a tough match for the Hawks but it was a good learning experience against a fine team before the return to the bread and butter of securing league points. As always, the support for the Hawks from the big travelling support was enthusiastic with not one leaving before the end.
