Oadby Owls Tawnys 7 Wigston Utd 2011 3 - 16th September 2012 (League)

The Tawnys started the game with a changed formation of 3-3-2; with Adam in goal, Will, James & Ewan at the back, a midfield three of Eric, Lucas and captain for the day Arun, with Leon and Alex V leading the line up front.

The lads settled quickly with some slick passing and movement throughout the midfield especially Arun causing lots of problems down the left flank who was beating his man at will.

It was only a matter of time before the Tawnys broke through and a quick-fire double from Alex V gave us a comfortable 2-0 lead. Eric and Lucas were bossing the midfield and Wigston were struggling to deal with Leon picking the ball up from deep and using his pace running at their defence. It was Leon who struck the third with a well taken goal before Alex V completed his first half hat-trick.

Wigston although not seeing a lot of the ball were still dangerous on the break but James, Ewan and Will stifled any serious threat through keeping their shape and concentration and their distribution from the back was much improved from the previous week. Alex M replaced James before half time due to injury but continued in the same vain and slipped in well at centre half. Adam had a reasonably comfortable half but dealt with everything that came his way confidently.

HALF TIME - TAWNYS 4 WIGSTON 0

Alex V who was outstanding in the first half was replaced by Tom at the break.

As we expected Wigston came out fast in the second half with seemingly nothing to lose. Our concentration levels dropped which led to two goals from Wigston which gave them a renewed vigour as they reduced the defecit to 4-2.

The lads responded well though and with Wigston pushing on they began to leave gaps at the back, Leon took full of advantage of this as again Wigston couldn't live with his pace and his second half brace completed his hat trick and an excellent performance. Tom also scored from long range as he enjoyed a good second half and brought different problems to the Wigston defence.

Wigston managed a consolation with the score at 6-2 but in reality the game was finished by then, but credit to them for never giving in and fought until the final whistle.

It was a pleasing performance from the lads whose passing at times was a pleasure to watch. Alex V's first half performance earned him player of the day although all of the boys contributed to a good win and keeps us on the road to Wembley - well the crisp bowl.

Oadby Owls Tawnys 2 Ratby Sports 4 - 9th September 2012 (League)

After a great win the week before, Oadby were ready for this game.  It was baking hot weather and everybody hoped we would get more points today. Our defence looked strong with Adam in goal, and Lucas, James and Arun starting in defence. We had the two Alex's at wide midfield with Ewan and last weeks man of the match Leon in centre midfield. Tom was playing upfront and really wanted goals.  Eric, Will and Charlie started as subs and so gave us options to make a few strong changes.

Unfortunately Oadby started slowly with Ratby knocking balls over the top. After about five minutes Ratby took the lead 1-0, and Oadby realized they needed to wake up.

James had been putting in some tough tackles but got injured and came off for Eric who did a great job with a sore knee. A few minutes later Oadby got a corner.  Alex went to take the corner, he curled it into the box and it slipped through the goalies hands and in. 1-1. Oadby are back in this.

Then we were really unlucky and a loose ball after a clearance was pounced on by the Ratby striker. 2-1 Ratby, and we were behind again.

Oadby finally starting to play really well, and our defence looked strong, especially with Lucas and Arun battling hard at the back and Adam making a great save to keep us in the match. Will came on for Leon in midfield to give us some fresh legs and try and give us the win.  Alex had a shot well saved that went for a corner.  Alex V took and played it to Alex M, it was a great finish to make it 2-2.

2 - 2 at half time.

Despite a more positive start to the second half with Ewan and Charlie linking up well, Oadby fell behind again. Oadby were still attacking strongly and passing the ball well and looked like equalising for a third time with Alex and Leon making some great runs and Ewan, Charlie and Tom all having chances on goal, but we couldn't find the back of the net.  Unfortunately as we pushed forward looking for the equaliser we got caught out again and went 4-2 down.

Will came back on again to add some attacking strength to midfield and we were still pushing hard to get back into the match. Tom took a good shot in the area but it struck a raised hand of a Ratby defender and the ref pointed to the spot. Charlie stepped up to take, it was a good penalty and the keeper did well to save it and it now felt like the game was finally lost.  Oadby continued to threaten the Ratby goal in the last few minutes, forcing a save from their keeper, but it was too late.

The game ended up 4-2 to Ratby.

Loughborough Dynamo 0 Oadby Owls Tawnys 1 - 2nd September 2012 (League)

On a bright a sunny Sunday afternoon deep into an odd summer, or early autumn if you are that way inclined, we saw the first of many 9 a side clashes involving our boys, 12 honest and true young men. Most arrived in time for a very structured and impressive pre-match warm up, one or two were slightly late and found comfort in volunteering as first half substitutes.

Oadby fielded a strong line up with Will, James, debutant and a deserved MOTM winner, Leon lining up in defence in front of the big and cheerful looking keeper,  Adam. Midfield was a case of Ewan and skipper Eric, sandwiched between the two wingers Alex V and Alex M with Tom up front looking bright and breezy.

The match kicked off and the first half was bossed by Oadby, the boys were quicker to press the opposition, firmer in the tackle, especially from Ewan, Will and James. Passing was cute with each attack made up of three or four neat passes splitting the Loughborough midfield and defence. Alex M pressed their left side of defence on many occasion.

The boys as a team grafted hard, breaking down the opposition attacks, mainly long punts down the flanks and middle and then turning and distributing our procession well. The petite Ewan grafting away for 55 minutes, proving his French pre-season training camp was worthwhile. Eric clearly carrying a knock added a level of calmness in midfield and was supportively vocal with his team mates leading by example. Alex V worked well going forward and with jinxy little twists and turns looks a sharp prospect at this 9 A side game. Later in the game he found himself at left back and offered a calm assured display there, much appreciated by the managers, who felt the defence and keeper were beginning to be placed under a bit of pressure.

Mid way through the first half  Oadby could of had 3 or 4 goals with a little more 9 a side football under their belts. Alex M or Tom could have had a couple more goals each. Tom relishing the surprisingly smooth September pitch was pointing for passes and directing the attacking flow, surely a goal would come for this young man who was working incredibly hard and clearly loving his first taste of league 9 a side footy. All the lads were a credit to the team taking to heart the, “defend from the front to attack", mantra and playing proper passing football from the back. It was only down to a confident and an assured Loughborough goalkeeper that Oadby didn’t have a goal or two to our name.

Half time arrived no changes and the boys took in oxygen, Robinsons orange squash and possibly Sainsbury’s blackcurrant cordial, although other brands are available, in gulps. Leon, a limping Eric and scarlet Alex V made way for Lucas stepping into a solid defence, Charlie jumping into a creative midfield and Arun grasping the chance to play on the left of midfield looked like nice changes.  Loughborough came out firing on all cylinders and looked keen to press home their local advantage. For ten minutes or so it looked possible that the season was going to start with a frustrating loss. However the Oadby team found its feet and the substitutes stepped into their roles with more confidence and Oadby began to turn the table. It was just a matter of time before the pressure exacted by Oadby came through and after a nice passing move from the back, through to midfield found Tom turning with the ball and drawing the keeper towards him before rolling the ball into an empty net.

This did seem to dampen the onus that Loughborough had and despite a little late pressure mostly brought about by misplaced passes or carless distribution Oadby ran out deserved winners 1-0.

A pleasing show and many positive to take away. Technique coach Georgie was heard to mention being pleased with the outcome and noted a bit of work on fitness needed to take place and had some food for thought for next week’s training. Corners, attacking and defending those, throw in’s and composure in front of goal looked the most obvious development points. But to end on it seems fitting to quote one Tawny season ticket holder, “ if that’s the worst they play this season they’ll be very difficult to beat...” great start to the campaign and now eager to press ahead home advantage with a stiff test next Sunday's 2pm kick off against Ratby Sports.
