East Goscote 1 Oadby Owls Snowys 1 - 30th March 2014 (League)

Harry Hawkins served up a Mother's Day treat scoring a free-kick from inside his own half, but it was not to be enough as the Snowys slumped to another draw against East Goscote. This game followed a similar pattren to their encounter last week. Oadby were slow to start and needed Yuvraj to be alert to keep them out in the opening minutes. But they awoke soon afterwards with Luca, Harry M, harry H and Kaden all getting shots in on goal. On ten minutes a needless foul saw oadby awarded a free kick just inside their half. Up stepped Harry H to launch it goalwards, the ball flicked off a defenders head and nestled into the back of the net courtesy of the left hand post. At 1-0 the Snowys were comfortable and passed the ball really well in the middle third. However they were unable to carve out any clear opportunities other than Harry H taking a few long shots.

The second half saw more of the same, with Oadby comfortable at the back allowing Yuvraj to collect the forward passes, while Josh and Harry M initiated the attacks. Oadby were to rue their missed opportunities as four times one more pass into Luca in the centre forward role would have seen him clean in on goal, but each time they chose to shoot or take one touch too many and the chance was gone. The closest they got was when Harry M chipped the keeper but saw his effort come off the underside of the bar and spin against the far post, with Kaden just unable to smuggle the ball over the line as East Goscote's defence re-grouped.

By now the game was getting very physical with numerous stoppages to cater for injuries, Theo took studs to the head, Harry H was involved in a high speed collision and Luca was hauled back as he went in on goal. There was no real pattern to the play other than some tidy passing by the Owls interspersed with players being helped up or off the field. The Snowys were forced to stay on the field each time as they had no subs, losing Reece to a mid-week injury, they only had the bare 7 for the game. East Goscote were able to remove their players to give them a chance for recovery.

With time running out a harmless cross came in from the East Goscote left, but unbelievably three Snowys elected to watch the ball trickle across the goal mouth allowing a grateful right winger to smash the ball into the empty net. A truly bizarre moment, completely against the run of play.

Oadby Owls Snowys 3 Groby Spartans 1 - 16th March 2014 (League)

The Snowys bounced back from their worst defeat of the season to record a convincing win over Groby. The Owls were out of the traps quickly with a goal to settle the nerves inside three minutes. Reece linked up with Theo down the Oadby left, Theo delivered an inviting ball to Kaden, who was lurking around the penalty spot. Kaden smashed his volley first time into the bottom corner to give the Owls a deserved lead. Kaden almost added a second soon after he was put in on goal by Theo again, but this time his effort was blocked by a combination of the keeper and a defender.  The Owls were very comfortable and good value of the this lead throughout the first half. Luca and Harry M again linked up well down the Oadby right and Theo was making the most of the space he was afforded down the left. Groby, as so many teams have this season, were having to resort to long balls down the Oadby wings, but Josh and Luca were untroubled, with Yuvraj happy to gather the tame pot shots that resulted. Harry M, Reece and Theo all had good chance as the half drew to a close, but none of them could add to their lead.

Into the second half and another hopeful through ball was being comfortably dealt with by Luca and Josh but this time the ball broke perfectly to their centre forward on the edge of the box and he beat Yuvraj at his near post. One all, where did that come from? The Owls response was immediate, Harry H forced a corner down the right hand side. Harry M delivered the ball onto Kaden's foot as he timed his run to perfection, beating the keeper with a powerful volley from 2 yards out. Again Oadby pressed for a third as Groby's threat fizzled out. Harry H and Kaden had chance to extend the lead as the shot count rattled into double figures. At the back Luca entertained the crowd with a delicious cameo of skill, he Cryuff turned his man and then instantly nut-megged a second with his very next touch before setting Harry H off into the right hand channel. Kaden continued to buzz around the Groby area and Harry M took over from where he left off with some menacing charges at the Groby goal. Oadby deserved a third and it came two minutes from time. Harry M again combined with Luca down the Oadby right, Luca's cross was at first caught by the Groby keeper at full stretch to deny Theo, but as he landed the ball popped out and Theo immediately slammed the ball into the empty net.

Ratby Raiders 1 Oadby Owls Snowys 0 - 15th March 2014 (League)

The Snowys somehow managed to suffer a defeat to Ratby who had not scored against any other team this season and who were rooted to the bottom of the table. This was a one-sided game in which the score could easily have been 5-1 to the Snowys but they failed to convert the succession of chances they created. Ratby started the game as the brighter side as the Snowys were lethargic and second to every ball. The pitch was in a terrible state with long grass making dribbling on the wings and passing very difficult. Luca and Reece were making good inroads down the right wing as the Snowys started to settle. But then a through ball into the box held up in the long grass allowing their striker to pick the ball up, evade two defenders and scoop the ball over Yuvraj into to top right hand corner for an unlikely lead.

The Snowys now camped in the Ratby half but were unable to create any clear cut opportunities to score despite Harry M's probing down the left. Then the chances started to flow, Kaden played in Harry M who's shot was blocked. Within a minute Kaden played in Reece who's shot hit the bar. The pitch was making any sort of passing football very difficult. Ratby "Parked the bus" in front of goal and looked to break as the Snowys, led by Luca tried to play their way through the wall of defenders aided by a surface that caused the ball jump to waist height at times.

Into the second half and the game turned into the Alamo merged with Rauke's Drift as the ball rarely left the Ratby half before being forced back towards their goal. Within a minute of the re-start Kaden beat two players and was clean through on goal, he was cynically scythed down from behind for a clear penalty, with only the keeper to beat. Harry H stepped up to take the penalty but it hit the foot of the post, Kaden followed up the re-bound but somehow his shot skimmed off the bar and over. Harry H, Theo and Kaden all had shots on goal as the pressure mounted. Kaden in particular was going through their defence as if they were not there but he could not find his usually reliable finish and was denied four times inside five minutes. Shots rained in as Luca was moved forward in the centre of midfield to turn the screw on the Ratby rear-guard. Ratby managed to get three breaks at the Oadby goal as the Owls pressed high up the pitch, but they all petered out harmlessly. Harry M and Luca combined well down the right to deliver cross after cross but no-one could find the net. This was a bitterly disappointing defeat against weak opposition.

Oadby Owls Snowys 0 East Goscote 0 - 23rd March 2014 (league)

Harry Hawkins late free-kick rattled off the underside of the bar to deny the Snowys the goal they needed to overcome East Goscote. East Goscote were quickest to start the match with the ball never leaving the Snowys half for the opening three minutes. Reece and Josh were in excellent form, and were not to be troubled for the entire game. Reece was having his best game of the season so far, showing great composure under pressure. The first time the ball got into the East Goscote half Harry H was put in on goal, with the keeper coming out bravely at his feet to stop the Owls opening the scoring. Next up a corner from Luca was well met by Kaden's head but his effort was over the bar. Back came Goscote but their attack fizzled away tamely allowing Yuvraj to initiate a counter attack with Theo down the left. Theo's cross found Harry H at the far post but once again the keeper was able to deflect the ball away for a corner from close range. Harry H continued his personal battle with their goalkeeper as Theo and Kaden combined well deep in their own half, allowing Kaden to put Harry H in on goal. Harry beat two defenders but could not get past the keeper.

Then came the move of the game as Yuvraj's goal kick found Kaden, Kaden exchanged passes through the midfield with Luca, allowing Kaden to penetrate the Goscote midfield before finding Theo down the left. Again Theo's first-time cross found Harry H all alone in front of goal, but Harry inexplicably air-shot his attempted finish. It would have been a cracker. East Goscote continued to press down their left flank, but got no change out of Luca and Reece, who held firm with ease. A Goscote corner after 14 minutes allowed them to get a header at Yuvraj's goal, their first attempt on goal, but it was well wide of the post. Again Oadby pressed forwards, Reece won another ball in defence and found Harry M. Harry took the ball into midfield and linked with Kaden, who found Theo who found Luca. Luca returned the ball back out wide to Theo who exchanged passes with Kaden and then fed a tempting throug ball to Harry M, but it was just out of his reach when he would have been clean through on goal.

Yuvraj adjusted his gloves, ready for the second half and we settled in for more of the same. Harry M's throw in found Luca in the first minute of the restart allowing him to ride some challenges along the edge of the box he then released the ball to a poised Harry M, but his shot whistled just over the bar. The teams tarded attacks for the opening five minutes with Kaden forcing two saves from the Goscote keeper while Yuvraj was tested for the second time in the match at the other end. The Snowys were showing more composure on the ball now with the two Harry's combining well down the left and Luca and Kaden likewise on the right. Luca and Kaden worked the ball down the left allowing Kaden to run at the two defenders, but with Harry M screaming for the ball down the left Kaden took a touch too many and the chance was gone. As the half progressed Reece and Josh pressed higher and higher up the pitch as they now joined and started the Owls attackes from the half way line. Goscote could not get a player on the ball in the Owls half. The pick of the Oadby attacks was when Kaden picked up Josh's long pass and played a 1-2 with Harry M. He then layed the ball back to Harry H who's shot fizzed past the left hand post.

Back came East Goscote with a good couple of minutes where they got a couple of shot at Yuvraj's goal from long range. From one such attack Yuvraj again got things started quickly with a long clearance to Kaden. Kaden did well to keep the ball in and then found Harry H. Having had a 'sighter' a few minutes earlier Harry this time hit the target with a tremendous strike that somehow his nemesis managed to tip over the bar. Another decisive clearance from Yuvraj found Kaden again, this time he flicked the ball on to Theo down the left. Theo's volley was mishandled by the otherwise immaculate keeper but he managed to make amends just in time with Kaden sharply in on his mistake. The last five minutes saw neither team able to muster a meaningful attack until Kaden was bundled over to prsent Harry H with his last kick of the game free-kick.

Oadby Owls Snowys 1 Loughborough Dynamo 0 - 9th March 2014 (league)

The Snowys got thir season back on track after the disappointment of losing out in the Leicestershire Futsal Final the day before. It took a goal of the highest quality to break down the Loughborough defence, and the Snowys battled hard to run out deserved winners on the day. In a game of very few chances, Theo was the first to knock on the Dynamo's door with two efforts on goal following a Kaden corner. His first shot was cleared of the line by the defender inside the post and his second fizzed just wide of the post. From the resulting goal-kick Kaden got in among the Loughborough defenders who were trying to play out of their defence, but Kaden eventually forced an error and passed the ball to Theo. Theo quickly returned the ball to Kaden who fed the ball into Harry M on the edge of the Loughborough box, Harry cushioned a left-footed half-volleyed return pass back into Kaden's path and he lashed the ball just inside the post with an accomplished first time finish.

The Owls continued to press high up the pitch, with Harry H, Luca, Reece and Theo forming a solid wall allowing Kaden and Harry M could get in and around the Loughborough defence. Loughborough had barely been out of their own half. Harry M and Harry H both had long range efforts which were off-target, but Yuvraj was yet to touch the ball with 15 minutes of the half gone. His first touch did eventually come when Loughborough got a free-kick in the Oadby half. Luca cleared the ball off the line from inside the post he was covering and Yuvraj was fouled picked up the loose ball. Loughborough did enjoy a brief spell of pressure in the Owls half but Yuvraj was comfortable in dealing with their two efforts on goal.

The second half was more of the same with Loughborough unable to create anything of note outside of three free-kicks, while Oadby closed down and harried them all over the pitch. Kaden was now combining well with Theo down the Oadby left. Five minutes into the second half Theo broke a couple of tackles and slipped the ball past the keeper, but as the ball headed inside the far post it was cleared off the line by a covering defender. After that neither team looked likely to score as the pace of midfield play and closing down reached a level where both teams struggled to keep possession without the other getting a foot in. Loughborough started to launch long balls into the Oadby half but Luca and Josh dealt easily with any that did not get carried over the by-line by the favourable breeze. Oadby ran out comfortable winners gaining revenge for last years defeat that saw the title slip away in the final game of the season.

Bardon Hill Eagles 2 Oadby Owls Snowys 1 - 2nd March 2014 (League)

The opening five minutes were dominated by Bardon Hill pressure. They immediately started to play attractive passing football, which cut through the Oadby defence with only a resolute Yuvraj preventing an early score. Having ridden out the early pressure, the Owls finally got into their stride and started to play the football we have got used to in 2014. They out-passed Bardon and made use of Kaden as the fulcrum of their attacks. Theo and Harry M provided ample support down the flanks with Harry H providing further midfield support. Kaden was the first to test the keeper, with Kaden soon providing a great ball for Harry H to fire at shot on target. As Bardon tried to apply pressure high up the pitch they were exposed at the back this allowed Theo to get in on goal twice in as many minutes. Next up was Kaden whose break through the defensive line brought him one on one with the keeper. He poked the ball past the keeper, before the keeper collided with him allowing the Bardon defender to nip in and clear the ball of the line with Kaden unable to follow up. In an excellent spell, Kaden turned provider once more this time linking with Harry M before playing in Harry H, his first shot hammered back off the right hand post with the ball ricocheting back to him where his second strike was saved. At the other end Luca and Josh ensured that Yuvraj only had to mop up misplaced through balls and passes. A Bardon free-kick did need Harry H to clear the ball off the line, but otherwise the momentum was definitely with the Owls. After fifteen minutes, Luca claimed the ball in defence and picked out a long pass to the feet of Kaden. Kaden again found Harry H in support and this time Harry's powerful shot could only be parried. Kaden was lightning quick to react and poked the ball in from close range for a well deserved lead.

Bardon's resistance was now broken as they struggled to accumulate enough quality possession to create anything of note, whereas Oadby were in the ascendancy, happy to soak up Bardon's attacks and then hit them quickly on the break. As the half drew to a close Reece and Josh were coping easily with the pressure while Kaden continued to dictate the play in the Bardon half as Oadby pressed for a likely second. The entire game turned on a bizarre series of incidents in the last minute of the half, Harry M was belatedly and harshly adjudged to have handled the ball just outside the left hand side of the box. In the confusion, Bardon placed the ball in a more central position and fired a shot on goal. Despite being jostled by two players Yuvraj pushed the shot back out to the edge of the box. Bardon fired a shot back on his goal, but Yuvraj again saved well and smothered the loose ball. A Bardon player slid into Yuvraj's back causing Yuvraj to spill the ball. In slid another Bardon player to put the ball in the net, with everyone else having stopped for the challenge on Yuvraj who was clearly hurt from the clash. As the scorer jogged back to the halfway line he enquired "Did that goal count?" to which the referee indicated it did, and blew for half-time.

It was clear as the second half progressed that Bardon had regained their belief, while Oadby continued to plug away to regain their lead. Bardon had now emptied their midfield in favour of a 3-0-3 formation with three players pressing the ball in Oadby's half and three stationed at the back. When Oadby got past the pressing players Bardon's defence managed to snuffle out Oadby's attacks and thump the ball back into the Oadby half. Repeat. Neither team looked likely to score, but with five minutes to go on the clock Bardon picked up one such punt down the left wing, and the subsequent cross fell to the opposite winger who finished from close range. This was hugely unreflective of the game which was otherwise a stalemate between two brands of football.

Aylestone Park Youth 0 Oadby Owls Snowys 1 - League (9th February 2014)

In a week where Jose Mourhino master-minded the deposing of Manchester City from the top of the Premier League, the Snowys humbled the unbeaten League 1 leaders with a dominant 1-0 victory.  Following the winter washout, both teams would have been mindful of re-starting the campaign with a loss. And so it was a cagey start to the game, but it was clear that from the outset Aylestone were not willing to commit players forward. Louie and Kaden pressed high up the pitch breaking up the Aylestone play before it could get started. Theo and Harry H tucked in behind them picking up the pieces and allowing the Owls to press forward. The best early chance came from Theo's persistence down the left, he conjured up a perfect cross for Kaden, who's header dropped onto the bar with the goalkeeper nowhere near it. Ten minutes into the game, Louie and Kaden combined well having once again won the ball from the Aylestone midfield. Louie's return ball to Kaden gave him the chance to shoot from the edge of the area, and his shot was very well saved from the bottom corner of the net.

The Owls had announced their intent, and ball was rarely in the Oadby final third. Reece and Harry M were introduced, and both had an immediate impact. Reece's pressing down the right wing gave Aylestone no way of playing up that wing, which appeared to be their game plan. Reece won the ball time and time again. From one such passage of play Reece's tackle allowed him to pick out Kaden who in turn found the left winger, Harry M, steaming in on goal. Harry's close range effort was well blocked by the keeper who stood big as the ball fired into his face.

Aylestone were rocking and their attack was blunt and inert. Luca and Josh dealt comfortably with the Aylestone attacks which lacked any conviction of players being brought forward in support. Josh and Luca were able to take their time on the ball and they picked out some superb passes to their attacking midfield team-mates. Reece, Harry H and Kaden all had chances to break the deadlock and Aylestone needed the halftime whistle to re-group. The referee duly obliged as the teams went in at 0-0.

The second half was very much the same as the first, Oadby looked threatening whilst Aylestone were only able to get two long range free-kicks to keep Yuvraj interested in the game. We could all see the evident improvement in the passing and movement of the Owls that has come about from their involvement in the Saturday morning Futsal tournament. It was a goal reminiscent of the indoor game that broke the deadlock seven minutes into the half. Luca's precise pass found Kaden with a defender in close attention, and Kaden knew exactly where his left winger would be as he turned and immediately sent Harry M in on goal. Harry took a touch to get the ball onto his favoured foot and then curled his finish in off the inside of the far post with the keeper rooted to the spot.

A goal ahead, the game did not really change it's pattern as it was Oadby breaking down play and then breaking at pace that Aylestone had no answers for. Aylestone mustered their first attack that carried any threat in the tenth minute of the second half, with Yuvraj saving well from a well struck shot from the edge of the box. Harry H was rock solid in the middle of the park and he returned the now hopeful rather than crafted long balls from the Aylestone defence. Louie was then picking up the pieces and combined well with Reece and Harry M in attack. The Owls nearly made it 2-0 when Harry M ghosted past his marker and sent over an inviting cross, Kaden was able to divert the ball towards goal but it was an agonising inch wide of the far post. At this point we should explain that all this was happening in some of the most wretched weather imaginable, spells of sunshine were interspersed with horizontal rain and at time hail. As we appeared to be getting deep into "injury time" Aylestone did create two good chances but neither found the target and the game, for them was lost. Harry H was required to provided a superbly timed tackle to deny another chance. The Owls had clearly deserved this win, every player had been excellent in both attack and defence, a complete team performance.

Loughborough Dynamo Terminators 1 Oadby Owls Snowys 0 - 12th January 2014 (League)

Jimmy Hill had a lot say about plastic pitches in the days of Loftus Road and Kenilworth Road, but in the modern era they are realistic (not carpets with sand on top) and most teams train on them. So the home field advantage once enjoyed by David Pleat's men should not be a problem in the modern era, but in today's game it was not the surface that constituted an edge to Loughborough but rather the shape of the pitch. Playing across one third of a full size football pitch makes the playing area both long and thin. The Terminators set up with a formation to suit this shape by deploying a Franz Beckenbauer sweeper with two wing-backs. This allowed them to fill the midfield with four players to Oadby's three. Harry H was caught between players while the wide players did not know whether to pinch across to help him or push onto the full-backs. This long sausage-shaped formation kept Oadby stretched throughout the match. Their sweeper picking up the through balls to Kaden and Louie while at the other end they were always able to support the front man with at least one supporting midfielder.

This is not to say that the Owls were outclassed or second best on the day, Loughborough did have the majority of the possession aided by their hometown know-how, but Oadby gave as good as they got in a game that could have gone either way. The first half began with Loughborough pegged back into their own half but with them holding onto possession of the ball. They were able to convert possession into territory and enjoyed a good spell of pressure. However, resolute defending from Reece, Theo and Luca meant they were reduced to pot shots which were comfortably fielded by a busy Yuvraj. The Owls came back into the match as the half wore on, Kaden broke through twice in the space of three minutes with his first effort saved and the second hitting the foot of the post. Better was to come as good work inside the box involving Louie, Harry H, Kaden and Josh resulted in Josh's shot from the edge of the box thumping the right hand upright.

The second half was more of a stalemate in midfield as both teams learned to cancel each other out. Loughborough pushed for a goal but again Yuvraj was comfortable in the work in he needed to do. Louie, Josh and Theo all fired shots at the Loughborough goal. The Owls best chance in this spell came when Louie broke down the centre drawing in the sweeper, his through ball to Harry M allowed him to fire a low shot goal-wards that was well saved by their keeper. However, just as the game seemed destined for 0-0 the Terminators intercepted a pass deep in the Oadby half and were presented with a two on one. Their supporting midfielder fired into Yuvraj's top left hand corner and Oadby were up against it. The Owls pushed the Dynamos deep into their half in search of an equaliser. This left Loughborough looking to break, which in turn left gaps down the wings for Harry M and Louie and Theo exploit. Josh was able to dictate the direction of the play from left back and nearly converted a mazy run from one of the pitch to the other. At right back Luca was executed a number of superb stand-out tackles to thwart the Dynamo attacks. But the Owls could not find a way through despite creating a number of half chances.

Oadby Owls Snowys 2 Bardon Hill Eagles 0 - 1st December 2013 (League)

The Snowys continued their resurgent form with a solid win over Bardon Hill Eagles. Theo had the Snowys on the board inside the first two minutes at the end of another top class flowing phase of football. Defending an early corner the Snowys broke down the right hand side with Harry H, Reece and Louie combining within the blink of an eye sending Louie deep down the Oadby right. Louie crossed for Theo arriving from the opposite wing to stroke the ball home. Bardon were down but they came out fighting and enjoyed their best spell of the game, but despite a succession of corners they were unable to break the Owls down. Luca and Josh coped comfortably with the Eagles attacks, this formed the platform for Harry H, Reece and Theo to get forward in support of Louie.

Bardon created their best chance of the game in the first couple of minutes of the second half, when for the second week in succession Yuvraj was forced to tip a shot over the bar after play opened up following a Bardon corner. But that was to be it for the Eagles as the stingy Owls defence closed the doors. Harry M was starting to create inroads down the Oadby left drawing the defence over and giving Harry H some extra freedom to pick out his team-mates. One such move saw Harry H find Louie down the right but he was shepherded a touch too wide and his shot hit the side netting. Harry M suffered the same fate three minutes later, but Bardon were being drawn all over the pitch and big gaps were appearing in their defence. The almost inevitable goal came from a Luca clearance which found Kaden and Harry H all alone with no-one at home in the Bardon defence. Drawing the keeper out Kaden had an obvious square ball to his right but elected to plant the ball in the bottom left giving the keeper no chance.

Bardon were truly rocked by now and were struggling to retain possession, Oadby were creating all the chances but Bardon's defence was always able to make it difficult to add to the scoreline. At the other end Luca was imperious, ably supported by a renascent Josh who sprayed a diversity of passes all around Coombe Park to kick off Oadby attacks. The Owls ran out comfortable winners and the style of football being played provides encouragement for the games ahead.

Oadby Owls Snowys Observe the 2 minute silence

Oadby Owls Snowys joined football in observing the two minute silence on Sunday.

The boys went on to contest a brilliant game of football, match report to follow.

Oadby Owls Snowys 1 Barrow Town Eagles 0 - 10th November 2013 (League)

The Snowys performed a leap frog manoeuvre over Barrow Town into third place with a narrow and evenly fought victory on a boggy a Coombe Park pitch. Both teams defences were largely in control in the early exchanges, with Luca and Theo in uncompromising mood at the back for the Owls. Kaden and Louie did get a couple of sights on goal as Kaden linked play from midfield, but neither was able to find the target. At the other end Barrows best chances were coming from set pieces, but Yuvraj was only forced into one save, albeit full length to his right. The Owls best chance came after the introduction of Harry M down the Oadby left. Harry exchanged passes with Kaden before mesmerising his marker and delivering a low cross to Kaden. Kaden flicked the ball first time to Louie arriving from the right wing, but his shot flashed narrowly over the bar.

The change around at half time brought little change in the pattern of the game. By now the Snowys were combining well with Reece and Harry M creating pressure on the flanks, Harry H was commanding the middle of the park which meant Barrow's threat was coming from breaks. Again Theo and Luca were equal to the task. And when Barrow finally did get past the defensive line, Harry H flew across the line of a shot to produce a memorable block from out of nowhere. The Owls best chance came when Harry M found Kaden who in turn fed the ball to Harry H. Harry burst down the centre of the pitch but his low shot was saved well by the keeper.

It was going to take something special to break the deadlock and that is exactly what the Owls conjured up. Yuvraj rolled the ball to Harry M who drew two players before flicking the ball with dead weight to Harry H. Harry H danced around his marker before delivering a perfect defence splitting pass for Louie Hart. Louie buried his finish first time low into the corner of the net, a move that had taken just 7 touches and 21 seconds from end to end. The game was not over as Barrow were not happy to go home without a point. Yuvraj pulled off two great saves, the second of which repelled an overhead kick from a corner. Three points in the bag and a performance to match.

Groby Juniors 2 Oadby Owls Snowys 2 - AET 3rd November 2013 (County Cup) Groby win 6-5 on penalties.

Snowys lose out in a thriller !

County cup round 3 away to Groby, Snowys win the toss and elect to choose ends as Groby kick off.

Early exchanges see both teams take turns of possession and from the off this looks like it will be an end to end game. Oadby are the first to test the oppostion as Louie holds up play down the right flank and passes back to HarryH and he in turn lays Theo in and he chances his arm with a first time shot that nicks off a defender and loops over the keeper into the top of the Groby net. 1-0 to Oadby with less than 5 minutes played. Groby look to hit straight back from the re-start but Louie robs them and runs with the ball to get another shot away. This goes for a goal kick but Oadby win it back again and take another shot with Kaden on the turn but it results in another goalkick. Finally Gorby clear to Oadbys half but Luca meets it and makes a run. He attempts to find Louie again but it bounces off him for a Groby throw. From this Groby push Snowys back, but every ball they play is met by a Snowys player and Oadby go forward again with HarryH but his shot is taken comfortably by the Groby keeper. Groby now look to go long with a deep kick from the keepers hands seeking out their players running behind the Snowys back line but again Snowys race back in numbers to snuff out the threat. Luca picks it up and runs almost the length of the pitch virtually unchallenged but he is unable to get a telling shot or pass away and Groby pick it up again. Back Groby come with another long kick, and again Snowys deal with it as Theo intercepts and the ball rolls back to Yuvraj.HarryH takes the bakk and runs and passes to  Reece and he to Louie. Louie's shot is picked up by the Groby keeper and the early long ball tactic to catch Snowys out is empoyed again. This time it takes one bounce and finds the arms of Yuvraj.  Yuvraj decides to kick it from his hands instead of playing from the back and drops the ball right into the centre circle. HarryH pushes to Louie out wide right and he passes back to Kaden whom back heels it first time back intothe path of HarryH to warm applause from all supporters for the skill. HarryH tries to hit it first time and it goes for a throw to Groby. From this the Groby break again and some neat passing sees Snowys back-pedalling. Theo takes control and sends Reece away down the left. the play the switches as he passes to HarryH and then to Louie. Louie gets a half chance away back across the face of goal and HarryH & Reece are running in at the far side, Reece hits a firm left foot shot but the keeper is equal to it and smoothers it away for a corner. Reece takes and after some ping-pong sees Groby break and get a 2 onto 1 play. As the Oadby players struggled to get back from the corner Yuvraj comes out and Groby shoot wide. Goal-kick played from the back sees Kaden in and he too shoots wide. Still and end to end game, but Snowys having the better chances as most Groby attacks are not resulting in shoots on the Oadby goal. Snowys gain several corners in succession but Groby still don't conceed the vital second goal Oadby are looking for. They break from from the corner down their right and as Reece & HarryH look to block hit a long ball across the pitch. Louie and a Groby player are both chasing and looking to reach the ball first. Both players take their eyes of the the ball and look to shoulder charge each other. As the Groby player comes across Louie, Louie gets in a firm  which sends the Groby player to the floor. Its judged to be a little over zealous by the referee and Groby have a free-kick deep in the Snowys half. Attackers & defenders crowd the box as the ball is delivered in from near the touch-line.It's hit too short and Snowys deal with it. Right on the strok of half time Theo makes a run and hit shot, though rather soft almost finds a way into the bottom left hand corner, but the keeper gets fingertips to it for yet another Oadby corner. Reece takes but the whistle blows. HT 0-1

Oadby kick off for the second half and the game continues at the franetic pace of the first half. Kaden almost goes through from the re-start but Groby defend well. HarryM & Josh are now on the wings and intially struggle with the pace of the game but they are soon getting involved. HarryH takes a shot just wide but Groby then start to grow in the game forcing Snowys back more and more. A Groby cross looks like thier attacker will have an easy tap in at the far post, but Luca cuts it out by shear good fortune and mops up the pieces to clear. Back come Groby again but Oadby battle well HarryM and Kaden tracking back to tackle, but the loose balls fall to Groby players. HarryM has some good possession going forward but again Groby prevent the cross or shot and back they come again. Oadby are starting to rock. and just as Groby look set to run through Josh slides in.Groby again get the loose ball and do get a shot away. This however is easily collected by Yuvraj.  He kicks out but back come Groby again and they are finally rewared with an equaliser.Yuvraj gets fingers to it but this time the shot finds the bottom corner. More Groby pressure from the kick-off as Oadby lose the momentum and really struggle to get the ball back. Oadby players swing legs at the ball but cant get anything on it. HarryM get injured as he battles for the ball and has to retire just as he was starting to impose himself going forward. Groby players seem to be everywhere as Oadby just can't get hold of the ball. They hit a long ball looking for their front man, but Theo shepherds it out for a goal kick. Finally Oadby get some respite and push Groby back once more. HarryH and Kaden set Louie off. He's in the clear and delivers a cross. With Oadby players in the box outnumbering the defenders the should score, but the goalkeeper collects it well to emliminate the danger. Another long kick is taken and it bounces off an Oadby player for a corner. It's whipped in and met by a Groby head, but wide. Gorby win it back form the goal kick and Theo & Josh lose out as the ball drops to a Groby player, but again the shot is wide. Theo then makes a run almost the length of the field but the keeper pushes his shot aside. Oadby then get the benefit of a decision, gaining a throw in, when the whole of the ball didnt look like it had crossed the line. Now they keep the ball deep in the Groby half. Kaden gets fouled right on the edge of the box and HarryH takes it. His shot deflects off the wall for a corner.  Louie takes the corner and Theo sustains a late tackle as the referee blows to send the game into extra time.  FT 1-1

Extra Time: Snowy's kick off but are robbed and a Groby shot is destined for the corner once more but Yuvraj saves. Oadby half clear and Groby win it back and look to score, but its the side netting. Oadby take the goal kick and look in no trouble as they cross the half way line but Groby break. Their forward is mid-way back in the Oadby half and the ball sits up inviting a sot. He duly takes it and its hard to tell whether it takes a slight deflection off the Oadby defender or just curls and loops towards the goal. Yuvraj gets good fingers on it, but the power of the shot takes it right into the top left hand corner as Groby take the lead. Groby look to finish the game and hit the Oadby post from their next attack. The first period of extra time finishes with Groby on top. The second period starts and Groby are robbed by Luca who repeats his run of earlier and finds himself in the oppostion box. His shot is saved and Groby clear long. With time running out. Oadby dig deep and rally and deny Groby the ball. Now every loose ball is collected by a player in black&white. Reece and HarryH winning the ball in centre midfield before Groby can build. Oadby defenders push up to assist and this helps to pin Groby back. Louie goes wide but the defender tackles and passes shot to his centre midfield. This player turns and looks to set off as Reece is upon him and out-strengths him. Reece looks to break but instead looks up and plays a defence splitting pass to Kaden. Kaden runs on and scores to make it 2-2 with seconds left. Kaden is immeadiatly lost under a mound of black & white shirts as thew team celebrate together. Oadby now very much on the front foot and Groby's turn to chase shadows. Reece again down the left combines with Kaden but his shot is saved this time. Louie, HarryH win the ball back and again put pressure on Groby but time runs out as the game goes to penalties. AET 2-2

Shoot out. Oadby go first but Kadens penalty is saved. Groby take the lead 0-1. In turn, each player steps up and scores and then after round 3 Yuvraj saves to bring the scores level again.Oadby now have the chance to take the lead and take it. Groby need to score to stay in the game and do. The 5 regulation kicks are taken and the score is 4-4. Sudden death. Reece takes the next Oadby kick and scores as the keeper gets a hand to it but it still rolls over the line. Groby repeat the trick as Yuvraj also gets a hand to their shot but it too also rolls in. 5-5. Only the keepers left on the pitch to take and Yuvraj is unlucky as his shot is saved by his opposite number. The Groby keeper has to score to prevent the whole process re-starting and she does. Groby win 6-5 on penalties.

The game was another one for the neutrals to behold. An end to end cup tie. Snowy's with flowing passing football and Groby, with a more often direct approach. Each team played to their own strengths and they caused each other problems. Snowy's early pressure should have put the game out of Groby's reach before they equalised. Snowy's almost won it in extra time after equalising themselves. Groby for their part could have finshed Snowy's off after scoring each of their two goals. Its a cliche, but neither team deserved to lose the game, and technically neither did. Even though Snowy's go out of the cup they did so after the most fantastic & workman-like team performance that they can all be very proud off.

Oadby Owls Snowys 7 Thurmaston Magpies 1 - 27th October 2013 (Friendly)

Magpies Blown Away

Snowy's played the last of their half-term friendlies on a blustery day against Thurmaston Magpies. Storms were forecast for the day and Snowy's hit the Magpies with a hurricane of their own. From the start Snowy's pressed forward with Reece and Theo on the left and Theo sends Josh clear and his shot is cleared for a corner. Reece takes, but it eludes both Harry's running in and Thurmaston clear high and long into the Oadby half. With all the Magpies rushing out to follow it Theo meets the ball on the full and hits it back. With one bounce it loops over the unfortunate keepers head and into the net. Theo celebrates in style as the poor keeper takes his frustration out on the goalpost and injures himself in the process. As he's unable to continue for the time being, Thurmaston switch players with an outfield player taking up position between the sticks. Snowys now pile on the pressure as Harry M is running riot down the right flank and he sets up HarryH for a long range shot. Magpies clear but the break is snuffed out and back come Oadby. Yet again down the right and a corner is won. Harry M sends in a delightful ball and several players scramble for a touch but Magpies prevail on this occasion. Not for long as Theo and Reece down the left exchange good 1-2's and Theo looks up and switches play back via Harry H to Harry M on the right. He could go on and take a shot but elects to go outside his man and put in a cross. Theo & Louie are arriving simultaneously in the centre and Louie pokes it home to put Oadby 2 up.

The Magpies from the kick off remind Oadby they are still a danger as Snowy's give away a needless free kick just into their own half. The Magpies player hits it long and high and forces Yuvraj to make the save against his own bar. As the ball bounces down Harry H mops up and sets off.He then plays a 1-2 with Louie and Harry H sees his ultimate shot skim the post on its way out. From the goalkick Snowy's force Magpies back and they panic giving away a corner. Harry M takes and Louie heads goal bound but its cleared. Theo meets it on the half way line and gives it to Reece. Reece takes a touch and moves it on to Harry H. Harry H finds Louie. Louie goes for the square cross and it nicks off a defender in the box and into the net. No rest for the Magpies as Snowy's come at them again.  Louie again down the right pulls it back in the centre and Harry H drives on with Josh & Reece in support. Harry H hits another shot onto the Thurmaston crossbar and out for a goalkick.  They take the kick and are stuggling to get out of their half. Harry H wins it and passes to Louie who gives it him back. As Louie sets off Harry H slides the ball towards Josh who flicks the ball first time with the outside of his foot into Louies path. The ball sits up just right to be hit and Louie obliges, guiding it on the volley into the top of the net. Magpies are unable to hang onto half time without conceding again as Snowys grab a fifth goal from a corner taken by Louie. The cross flicks off a defenders head into the path of HarryH and he hits home.   HT 5-0.

From the start of the second half Thurmaston now have the wind behind them and pull a goal ball with good play down their left side. Snowy's look around at each other in dis-belief that the game has actually re-started. Determined to put setback behind them Luca sets off beating a Magpies player and hits cross-field to Theo and he interchanges with HarryM. As the ball comes back to him, Theo hits the bottom of the post with his shot. HarryM gathers the lose ball and whips it back in for a scramble in the goalmouth. The Magpies clear and hold possession and get deep into the Oadby half. They shoot and Yuvraj gets down well to his right to make the save. Corner to Thurmaston!  But it comes to nothing and it is gathered by Luca. All the Oadby players interchange passes, Luca to Theo, to Louie to Reece. But as Reece looks to put Josh away the ball is stolen from him. The Magpies player does not make much ground as Luca wins it back and an almost carbon copy move ensues. Luca to Louie and Louie onto Reece. Reece does not get caught this time and rounds the player and drives on. As another defender steps over to meet him he looks up and hits a subtle pass to Josh in space. Josh calmly accepts this assist to score Oadby's 6th goal of the game. Thurmaston again look to hit back from the kick-off as they did at the start of the half, but as the attacker side-steps Theo, Yuvraj makes an fantastic save to deny them. Another Thurmaston corner but from it the ball runs loose and Louie picks it up and breaks with Reece. Louie makes good ground and passes to Reece. He races towards the Thurmaston goal and looks to pick out Josh once more. His pin-point cross bounces a studs width out of Josh's reach at the far post and trickles out for a goal-kick. Thurmaston take the kick quickly as the Oadby players are retreating to the half-way line and the tactic almost works. An attacker is faced by Luca but he manages to beat him and is in on goal. Yuraj comes out to narrow the angle and the attacker is forced wide as he rounds him. Just as he is about to hit the ball into the empty net, Reece has chased back and thwarts him with a sliding tackle at the near post and forces the ball out for a corner.Reece takes the congratulations of his team mates for his last ditch clearance as they all mark up for the corner. Its hit long and goes all the way across the pitch for an Oadby throw in. HarryM takes and Luca receives it from him. Luca hits long to Reece on the right and he again finds Josh. Josh with work to do steps past a defender and passes to HarryM, whom has Louie for company. HarryM hits it back into the box and Josh & Louie take a couple of 1/2 shots each. Luckily one deflects back to HarryM. He looks up and pulls it back and Louie this time finds the back of the net.  Full time whistle blows and the players exchange handshakes. Snowy's adapted well to the weather conditions, keeping the ball down for the majority of the game. (Theo's goal excluded). Thurmaston did have chances, which had they have taken them, the game could have been closer. Snowy's were however always in control, and they managed this game much better than their previous one.

Oadby Owls Snowys 3 Mountsorrel Tigers 1 - Friendly (17th October 2013)

The Snowys dispatched two Division Two sides in a week as a gap in the fixtures allowed Oadby to get in a couple of Friendlies. Both games were comfortable wins against very good sides, with a hat-trick in each. First up were league leaders Mountsorrel Tigers on the Astroturf at Guthlaxton on a Thursday night. The dewy surface meant the ball was fizzing around quickly, and both side showed they had players with great touch to cope with the conditions. The match was in three 15 minute periods and Kaden managed to get a goal in each. After some relentless pressure he was the first to react to a great strike from Harry H that could only be parried, and Kaden dispatched the ball into the net with a first time finish.

His second helped settle the nerves, as a by now dominant Snowys, were labouring to find the target despite a string of chances. Kaden stole the ball from a defender and clinically dispatched his second low into the bottom right hand corner. Mountsorrel were much improved in the third period and got a good goal when the Owls failed to clear one of their attacks. This only served to wake the Owls up, they put on another superb passing display with a 5 player passing move ending up with a cross for Kaden to finish emphatically.

Oadby Owls Snowys 4 Hinckley Reds 1 - 20th October 2013 (Friendly)

With no competitive fixtures for a couple of weeks due to half-term, Snowys arrange some game time with several friendly fixtures. This one against Hinckley Reds who are flying high in Division2. Reds kick off but are soon robbed by Harry Mansfield who finds Kaden. Kaden gets hits shot away but it pin-balls between him & the Reds players and finally goes for a goal kick. The kick is taken and it's collected by Josh with a combination of his head and feet. Josh finds Harry Hawkins and he smashes in another shot in which is well saved by the Reds keeper. The resulting corner taken by HarryH is a short one to Kaden, but the play breaks down and Reds counter.  A good move by Reds sees Reece do just enough to put his man off and the ball rolls for a goal kick to Snowy's which Yuvraj takes. The ball moves down the Snowy's left and Josh & HarryM combine well for a succession of throw-ins which gain ground down that flank. Snowy's have the bulk of the early play but the Reds look threatening on the break. From a Reds break Louie clears long from the edge of the box to Kaden who back-flicks a first time touch to HarryH to win a corner. All the supporters acknowledge what a great piece of play that was with warm applause. Snowy's take the corner short again but as previous it breaks down. From this Reds gain a throw near the half way line to ease the pressure on themselves. The throw sees Reds break 3 on 1. Reece holds position to slow down the man with the ball but the pass is still slid through and a Reds shot is well saved by Yuvraj.

Yuvraj wastes no time clearing upfield to Josh who performs a pirourete on the ball and shoots just wide of the left hand post. Once more Reds counter and once more Snowys defend in numbers on the edge of their box. Louie ultimately wins it and breaks all the way down the pitch before shooting just wide. Snowy's make substitutions and the introduction of Jack & Luca give Snowy's a boost as Josh flicks home the first cross from Jack to give Snowys a deserved lead. Snowy's were a tad slow from the Reds kick off and the cliché of being vulnerable after you've scored nearly haunted them as Reds forced a great save from Yuvraj as his tipped as goal bound shot over the bar. The Reds corner comes to nothing and as Oadby push forward Louie is brought down just in the Reds half. He takes the free kick which dips right under the reds crossbar where Josh is positioned, but the Reds keeper somehow scrambles it away. Now a succession of corners won by Josh, HarryM & Jack keep Hinckley pinned back but Oadby can't force the second goal home and half time gives Reds some respite.  HT 1-0

Right from the start of the second half, early Hinckley pressure forces Snowy's back and Luca looses out to a Reds player. He then gives Yuvraj no chance as he equalises for Hinckley. Snowy's now kicking up-hill, look panicked & shocked by the goal and take a few minutes to settle and re-group as Hinckley try to grab the initiative in the game. Another good save by Yuvraj maintains the parity as Snowy's weather the Hinckley storm. They eventually break with HarryH & Reece interchanging passes for Harry to move it on down the middle to Kaden, who in turn slides it into Jacks path. Jack calmly restores Snowys lead with placed shot to the bottom right corner. The game now has a cup tie feel as neither side plays a great deal of controlled football, yet the game is end to end. Luca and Kaden then combine and Kaden is brought down on the edge of the box just being denied a penalty. HarryM steps up to the ball and appears to have limited options for a strike with the wall so close and well maintained. Intelligently he lifts the ball up & over the wall. Kaden & the keeper both move towards it. The ball drops down from Kaden's head for Jack to hook it home and give Snowys breathing space. Snowy's now pile on the pressure and the Reds keeper is having the match of his life to keep Snowys out. Louie takes a corner and Kaden heads goal bound but its saved again. Another corner and another as HarryM & Louie shoot. Finally Snowys put the game out of Hinckley's reach as Jack takes a corner which sees the ball cleared to the edge of the box and HarryM picks it up. HarryM finds HarryH & good passing between him Louie, and Kaden see the ball come back to HarryH and he drills it against the bar. It bounces down and the grateful Jack taps it home.

Snowy's see the game out for the win.But despite the score-line and the pressure on the Reds keeper this wasn't a vintage display. All the players had passages of play and decision making well below the high standards they set themselves. That said, there were pockets of brilliance and skill to behold but, Snowy's for the most part struggled with their own passing  & control of the game. They will play a far better than this as a team and probably not even win, but today they were good enough to beat a resolute Hinckley side.

Oadby Owls Snowys 2 Ratby Raiders 2 - 13th October 2013 (League)

Nervy Snowys Snatch a draw

Snowys returned to league action after their cup win with a home game against Ratby. The change in competition was accompanied by a radical change in weather as the constant overnight rain may have put the fixture in doubt. But games are rarely cancelled by the Owls, and the early kick off got underway with the Snowys in the wet and blustery condtions.

From the start Snowys made several passes and won an early throw in the Ratby half but it came to nothing and Ratby hit the ball long back and Yuvraj gathered. His quick distribution found Luca who in turn to fed Louie. Louie sent an equally early ball to Harry H was moved on to Kaden. A typical run saw his shot hit the base of the Ratby post and bounce out for a goal kick. For the next few minutes Snowys press and pin Ratby back, but despite the possession the Ratby keeper is not tested and they break down Snowys right with their first attack. The Ratby attacker hits a cross which Reece just manages to get something on withhis head to stop it reaching the forward but to no avail. 3 other Ratby players are on the edge of the box and one hits a shot into the bottom right hand corner of Yuvraj's goal. 0-1 to Ratby.

Oadby look to hit back and have a good passage of play with all players interchanging passes. Reece to Kaden. Kaden a little give and go to Harry H. Harry to Josh.Josh to Louie who in turn plays it back to Harry once more whom lays it back to Luca who takes a shot from distance just wide of the goal. Kaden then takes a knock and comes off for Theo whom immeadiatly wins a corner taken by Josh, but the keeper gathers. Luca wins the ball back from the long kick and combines with Theo who sets Louie away. Louie gets his shot away and it's just wide. Despite this pressure Ratby show they are dangerous on the break and nearly add a second goal in a similar style to their first but the cross this time leads to a corner. The corner is flicked on and the resulting shot from the edge of the box only just clears the Snowys bar. Once more Snowys attack with the ever available Harry M down the flank. Harry M With great vision finds Louie and Louie is brought down for a free kick a balls width from the line of the box. Harry H takes it firmly but straight into the wall. The re-bound comes back to him but the defenders close him quickly as he hit them for a second time. As he lifted the ball over them. the first half was brought to a close.

HT 0-1

Ratby started the second half but were robbed by Harry M, who with Luca, pegged them back once more. Kaden now recovered from his knock managed a shot but it was too easy for the keeper to deal with. Oadby kept the pressure on though as Harry M finds Harry H who gets a long distance shot away. Ratby panicing but the keeper claims and releases early as far as Theo who sets up Harry H. Harry is brought down and lines up the kick once more. This time he clears the wall and the ball flicks of a Ratby head onto the bar. In the ensueing panic Ratby fail to clear and after a couple of blocked shots Theo pushes the ball goal bound for Kaden to back flick on the way into the Ratby Net. 1-1 and now Oadby are in the assendency. But Ratby refuse to roll over and the Owls needlessly give away a free kick deep in their own half as they fail to deal with an attackers run. If the Ratby first goal had an element of fortune about it, the second was disptached in clinical fashion that Ronaldo or Beckham wuold have been proud off. The Ratby player stroking the ball from wide on the Snowys right into the far top corner side netting, giving Yuvraj no chance. I doubt there will be many free kicks of that quality witnessed this season and it took the wind out of the Snowys sails. After looking the better side for most the game Oadby were now on the back foot as Ratby looked to finish the game off. The Owls were nervy when defending and struggled to keep Ratby at bay. Harry M had other ideas and despite staying wide for most of the match, dropped back and gathered the ball to ease the pressure on his team mates. He ran and won a corner, followed by two more as Oadby gained some belief back and once more they hemmed Ratby back in their own half.  Eventually Ratby do manage to break and just as their player was looking to go one on one with Yuvraj, Theo swept back and dispossessed him. Theo and Kaden go forward and with time running out find Louie for a one-two pass. Theo is put, in but the ball is cleared for a throw in. Theo takes the throw and another one two with Kaden sees Theo pull the ball back across the box but it evades both Louie and Kaden rushing in.  It also by-passes a couple of Ratby defenders and finds Harry M,  on the edge of the box and he smashes the ball home to equalise. Oadby once more win the ball from the Ratby kick-off but times up and the game ends in a draw. This was a well fought game with both sides having chances to finish the other off but they didn't take them. Ratby always threatened on the break and scored a wonderful free-kick. Oadby could have been 3 up before Ratby scored and yet, will be relieved to grab a deserved draw. But, they will reflect on how they let Ratby into a game that for the most part were in total control of.

Anstey Swifts 0 Oadby Owls Snowys 4 - 6th October 2013 (County Cup)

On a scorching autumn morning the Owls proved too hot to handle for the Anstey Swifts as they ran out comfortable winners in the first round proper of the County Cup. The early exchanges were quite even as the Snowys pressed forward for a goal to settle the nerves, whilst Anstey passed the ball well an got into some dangerous areas in the final third. However, as the half wore on Harry M and Louie started to dominate down the wings. Anstey could not cope with the dual threat as they both started to create a succession of chances. Kaden, Harry M and Louie all came close to breaking the deadlock, but shots were fizzing wide and over the target. Ten minutes into the first half and the Anstey resistance was finally broken, Harry M stole the ball from a full-back and fired the ball towards the far corner. The ball thudded off the base of the goal-post allowing Louie to pick the ball up on the by-line, he squared intelligently to Kaden standing all alone 6 yards out. Kaden did not need to be asked to crash the ball home.

Now the game turned into a dominating performance, Reece and Theo "closed the doors" at the back leaving Yuvraj as a spectator. Luca was brought on to play striker and he reaped havoc on the Swifts defence. A mazy run down the right hand channel found Harry M all alone in the box but he blazed over the bar when he had time to set his shot. The second goal was coming and it arrived just before the half time whistle. Yuvraj, took advantage of a rare touch of the ball to launch a quick long clearance to Luca. Luca rounded a defender and then did the same to the goalkeeper before dribbling into the empty net. 2-0 at half time.

The second half was even more one-way traffic than the first. This was not just a passing exhibition this was a passing masterclass. One-Two's, through balls, crosses, switching the ball from one wing to the other - total football and beautiful to watch. Kaden looked to have added a third when his close-range shot lifted the goal up as the ball pressed upwards against the bar and the net. As the goal frame came back down to the ground, the ball was spat back into play and no goal was given. No goal-line technology at this level I'm afraid. Anstey were restricted to hopeful through balls which Harry H and Reece dealt with comfortably. Yuvraj got a couple of touches and showed great concentration when called up to perform routine collections. Luca Josh and Louie were linking up superbly in the middle of the park. The Swifts goal lived a charmed life with shots peppering it from all angles and the corner count was going into overdrive. From one such corner came the next goal. Harry M and Josh exchanged glances Josh signalled where he wanted the ball and then nipped in at the near post to glance his header into the net.

Anstey were rocking and would have loved to hear the final whistle by now. Theo added some late pain to their morning by powerfully volleying home another Harry M corner. A comfortable win, with the passing worked on in training being amply displayed in the game situation. No-one will want to draw the Snowys in the next round in this form.

Oadby Owls Snowys 0 Aylestone Park Youth 1 - 22nd September 2013 (League)

The Snowys got their home campaign off to the worst possible start with a narrow home defeat to Aylestone. Neither team really posed too much of a threat in a game of few chances. The Owls started the better of the two teams with Kaden's early sortie into the Aylestone box snuffed out by a last ditch tackle. Soon afterwards Harry H hit a speculative dipping shot from wide on the right that seemed destined to creep under the bar. The Aylestone keeper athletically tipped the ball over to deny the Owls the lead. Aylestone were struggling to get out of their own half, when they finally did they earned a soft corner. The Owls failed to clear and the ball was somehow stabbed in from 3 yards out. The Owls were behind and needed to react. The game developed into a midfield attrition with both teams closing down quickly not allowing the other to play. As a result neither team managed to build their passing games.

The second half was largely more of the same, however it was Oadby pegged back into their half and needing to hit Aylestone on the break. Aylestone were now content to hold onto their lead and loaded their defence leaving the midfield with more space. They played long balls to a front two and this provided a succession of half chances without really troubling Yuvraj in the Oadby goal. At the other end Oadby could not find a way into the final third. Harry H fired a decent effort over the bar, but in truth Oadby never looked like equalising. Theo was presented with the best opportunity when put through by Harry M. He fired his shot at the foot of the post but it was again superbly kept out by the Aylestone keeper.

North Kilworth 0 Oadby Owls Snowys 15 - 15th September 2013 (County Cup)

Snowys pass their first cup test

Snowys made the trip to the south of the county having been drawn away to North Kilworth. The village hall pitch was in good condition and having been recently cut, provided a slick & slightly greasy playing surface. From the kick off Kilworth made their way into the Snowy's box and managed a shot just wide of Yuvraj's left hand post. Was this a sign of things to come?  Snowy's immediately had other ideas. Kaden passed to Louie who shot wide, but deflected on the way for a corner. From the corner Louie found Harry M but his cross-shot ran away for a goal kick to Kilworth. Within a minute Harry H won a free kick and took it to Harry M who interchanged back to Harry H who in turn played a through ball to Kaden. Kaden's shot hit the right-hand post and the ball went out for a goal-kick. Harry M picked up the errant goal-kick and pushed it down the line to Reece. Reece beat his man and squares it to Kaden to give Snowy's the lead.

The Snowy's then put the game effectively out of Kilworth's reach with some quick fire goals. A throw in by Louie sees a 1-2 played with Harry H and as Louie crosses with both Kaden & Reece standing in tandem unmarked in the Kilworth box, it's Kaden who sidefoots home. Kilworth are robbed from the kick off and the resulting throw in this time taken by Harry M to Kaden, he came inside his man to complete his hat-trick in off the Kilworth right hand post. Kilworth were not going down without a fight, their next attack left a player is 1 on 1 with Yuvraj who saved well  Harry H cleared the resulting corner to Louie and with Josh and Kaden in support Kaden attempted to grab a 4th goal but is denied, first by a defenders block and then he hit over the bar. Constant pressure by the Snowys leads to yet another throw, this time taken by Reece to Luca. Luca who had moved into space and called for the ball well, controlled the ball equally as well. He laid it back to Harry M who in turn linked well with Reece who hit a first time left foot cross that rebounded off the chest of Josh and a Kilworth defender only into the path of Theo.Theo from the edge of the box hit a swerving shot that took the slightest of defections into the Kilworth goal. The deflection making little difference as it was goal bound anyhow.

The relentless Snowy's play continued as Reece took a throw in to Luca who's shot resulted in a corner. Reece hit this long despite Luca running over and wanting a short one. The ball found Theo who hit a shot right at the keeper. As Kilworth try to clear Luca collected and from the right and hit a powerful shot destined to finish high in the Vipers net. With the keeper under pressure from Reece  he struggled to parry with enough effect, the ball looked certain to end up in dropping into the goal. Reece did what all players should do by following in and made absolutely sure, right on the line as he grabs Snowy's fifth.

Reece & Harry M combined well leading to yet another throw in. This time taken by Harry M to Luca. Luca side-footed to Theo. Theo took a leaf out of Kaden's book and hit the post. The ball rebounded to Reece, who could have snatched at a first time shot, but instead calmly rolled it back to Harry M. Harry M came inside and hits his shot to the bottom right hand corner of the Kilworth net. With the game looking safe, Snowy's sportingly removed a player from the field to allow Kilworth some respite.

They unfortunately didn't get any. Theo collected a loose ball in midfield and this time found Josh in a fantastic position mid-way between the half way line and the edge of the Kilworth box. Josh clipped the pass from Theo with a first time flick over the outrushing defender and right at the feet of Reece. Reece like, Kaden & Harry M from similar positions, dropped his shoulder to come inside of the defender. Having made the space to shoot the end result was the same as his team-mates as he also drilled a low shot into the bottom corner of the Kilworth net.

HT 0-7

Theo swapped places with Yuvraj in goal at half time but the game continued as it did prior to the break. Harry H hit a firm shot which was very well saved by the goalkeeper. As he looked to gather Louie was on hand and showed no mercy blasting the ball into the roof of the net. From this kick off Kilworth had a good passage of play and pressed well into the Snowys box with good one twos. As they looked to get a shot away Snowys broke with Louie. Kaden took his resulting pass in his stride and scored his 4th and Snowys 9th.  Harry H grabbed goal 10 when he took a long distance shot which rifled into the net. Snowy's now removed another player and its 7v5. Still Snowy's come forward and Reece hit a high hopeful ball towards  Kaden and he scored yet another goal. Whilst the game as a contest had been over for a long time, Kilworth to their credit kept going and did win a few 1 to 1 tackles. Snowys though were able win it right back before Kilworth could make anything of it.  Harry H scored his second of the game after good team passing between Louie, Kaden and Reece. The latter switching play to Harry H to roll the ball in.

This goal saw all 4 of them taken off and replaced by Harry M, Luca, Yuvraj & Josh. Kilworth also were allowed to add players of their own. No change in the play though as Snowy's still dominated. Yuvraj had a shot which was parried and Josh this time "does a Kaden" and hits the post. The second rebound saw Yuvraj hit the ball over the bar.  Kilworth broke down their right and their player is 1 on 1 with Theo in goal. However he hit a tame shot wide and the wry grin in his face says that he knows he could have done better.  Josh and Harry M combine and Harry M shoots and Yuvraj cleans up the spoils to score. Yuvraj then has to take a temporary rest after a being caught and Harry H came back on for him. In the confusion Kilworth make ground and this time have two players clean through and bearing down on Theo. As they look to grab a goal Harry M has other ideas and chased back from deep to make a fantastic last ditch tackle inside the box. Harry M also retains possession in the tackle and cleared up the wing finding Luca who ran through and finally grabbed a goal of his own. With time on the clock running out Snowy's pushed on again and won a corner. Josh, then completed the full house of Snowy's scorers after a rebound fell to him. It was no more than he deserved having quietly and effectively gone about his job in midfield.

Aside the obvious gulf between the teams, Kilworth were excellent hosts and their team never really let their heads drop. But remember that the number of divisions between these two sides would be akin to Manchester United playing Kidderminster Harriers. Neither team should read too much into the final score as sterner tests await the Snowy's, and I'm sure Kilworth will do well in their own division too.

Cup upsets do happen, but not today as Snowys go into the next round

Groby Spartans 1 Oadby Owls Snowys 2 - 8th September 2013 (League)

The Snowys got their season off to a winning start thanks to a late winner from Kaden Stokes. Both teams created a number of chances as the game see-sawed from end to end. Both goalkeepers were in excellent form as Yuvraj and his opposite number seemed to trade who could make the most saves in the game. The Snowys broke the deadlock when Harry M and Harry H combined well with the latter feeding Kaden deep into the Spartans defence. Kaden shook off his marker before lashing the ball high into the Groby net for a deserved lead. Oadby persevered with their passing game despite the long grass, while Groby's attacks were more direct. Oadby held their lead into the half time break.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first, with both teams raiding the other's goal but finding the keeper in great form. This time it was Groby who found a way through to bring the scores level. The Owls dug deep and continued to press for a winner, and it finally came, albeit late in the game thanks to Kaden's persistence. Kaden's initial shot was well saved but the ball was still in a dangerous position. Kaden reacted first, launching himself at the ball to deftly flick the ball over the keeper's despairing hand. Two good teams had contested an entertaining game, with the Owls finishing on top. For Groby it was to be a hapless day as the Eagles and then the Tawnys went on to inflict defeat on their 2nd and 3rd teams.
