  • Club History

Welcome to Oadby Owls Football Club.

Founded in 1968 by some enthusiastic Sheffield Wednesday supporters, hence the name, Oadby Owls Football Club has grown to become one of the largest and most successful clubs in Leicestershire today.

The club owes a debt of gratitude to the many volunteers over the intervening years but perhaps none more so than our late President John Monks who ensured the survival of the club with injections of his own cash during the difficult times of the 1980′s.

In 2007 the club achieved Charter Standard status and with joint funding by the Football Foundation and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council the ‘John Monks Pavilion’ was opened.  The pavilion marked a new era for Oadby Owls and player numbers swelled considerably. Oadby Owls now fields 35 teams of all ages and runs a thriving Saturday Football Academy where upto 250 young children attend each week. Oadby Owls also organises some of the best tournaments in the country. The club has since progressed in becoming a Charter Standard Community Club.

The club adopts high standards and would like to pay tribute to all its 100+ volunteers for their perseverance and hard work. We also thank and praise our many sponsors who have given generously over many seasons.

As well as developing the football skills of its members, Oadby Owls positively promotes and interacts with local community initiatives.

Oadby Owls is run on an entirely voluntary basis and there is always a need for a fresh influx of helpers and ideas. The future success of the club depends on its members as we strive to become one of the best clubs in the country.

Lutterworth Town 0 Oadby Owls Eagles 5 – 2nd October 2011 (County Cup)

EAGLES FLY INTO LAST 32!!

An emphatic first half performance ensured a safe passage into the third round of the county cup for the Eagles. Alex VD crashed home the opener after a flowing move, Lucas made it 2-0 with the move of the game including Charlie, Alex M, Ewan and an excellent finish from Lucas. It was one-way traffic but when called upon James was at his his combative best at the back showing his usual steel. A stunning dipping volley made it 3-0 courtesy of Lucas before Alex M bullet header from Alex VD corner brought a great first half to an end.

Half Time: Lutterworth 0-4 Eagles

At the break Bertie came on for Lucas, meaning Alex M moved into the middle of the park whilst Jasper replaced Charlie with Alex VD moving up front. With the soaring heat playing a part the Eagles passing and moving wasn’t as fluent as the first half but Bertie and James were solid when called upon. The fifth and final goal was an OG after some good build up play and a shot by Alex M.

A good all round performance with James being immense at the back ensuring a first clean sheet of the season.

Enderby Reds 4 Oadby Owls Eagles 2 – 25th September 2011 (League)

The Eagles travelled to Enderby in their second league game of the season trying to secure their first points of the season. A sloppy start by the Eagles resulted in an early goal from Enderby due to a defensive error. The Eagles responded positively and an excellent through ball by Lucas played Ewan in one on one with the advancing keeper, Ewan bravely lifted the ball over the keeper into the far corner before being clattered.

The Eagles were finding it difficult to keep the ball on the small pitch and were too often miss-placing passes. Enderby struck again half way through the first half when a speculative shot from twenty yards flew over Matthews head into the top corner. The Eagles bounced back again through Lucas latching onto Ewan’s pass to smash home from a tight angle. On the stroke of half-time Enderby scored their third with the Eagles not closing the forward down early enough leaving Matthew no chance.

Half Time Enderby 3 Eagles 2

Despite having an excellent half Ewan picked up a knock and was replaced by Jasper with Alex M replacing Alex VD. The second half was frustrating as the Eagles final ball was eluding them and they were unable to keep the ball for any period of time in order to hurt the tiring Enderby defence. A harsh second half penalty was excellently saved by Matthew followed by another point blank save from the rebound but Enderby scored at the third attempt. There was late pressure from the Eagles but were unable to pull one back. Matthew made some excellent saves throughout the game and without him Enderby could have scored a couple late on as the Eagles pushed forward.

A disappointing result, for a match we could have won.  A little more luck and if the Eagles keep the ball better I’m sure we can do better next week.

Team: Matthew, James, Bertie (c), Alex VD (Alex M), Lucas, Ewan (Jasper), Charlie.

Oadby Owls Eagles 7 Quorn Foxes 2 – 11th September 2011 (County Cup)

Eagles hit Seven in County Cup Romp

The Eagles are in the hat for the second round of the county cup despite a first half scare, with a 7-2 triumph at home to Quorn Junior Foxes.

Although the Eagles were quick out of the blocks it was Quorn who took an early lead due to a mix up in the Eagles penalty area. With the last minute defeat a week ago the Eagles could well have panicked but a Jasper thunderbolt from a free-kick just outside the area and another well taken goal from goal hungry Charlie ensured the Eagles went into the break with a slender lead of 2-1.

Half Time Oadby Owls Eagles 2 Quorn Juniors Foxes 1

James and Alex VD were introduced at the interval to add some fresh legs to the Eagles. Lucas scored early in the second half with a smart finish from around the penalty spot to calm the nerves allowing some free-flowing football. The Eagles now looked rampant as Quorn’s first half efforts began to take their toll.

With Alex M now playing in his more familiar midfield role he began to surge forward at will together with good work down the left wing from the tireless Ewan and Alex VD – replacing Charlie at the break – linking well with the midfield further goals were a matter of when not if. An Alex M double including a solo run and finish was followed by a great move resulting in Alex VD scoring his first of the season.

But goal and player of the day was left to Jasper whose fizzing shot from twenty yards flew in off the under-side of the bar to cap an outstanding display.

James and Bertie defended well and looked solid in the second half but Quorn got the consolation goal their efforts deserved but it’s the Eagles who soar into round two.

Team: Matthew, Alex M, Bertie, Ewan, Lucas (James), Jasper, Charlie (Alex VD)

Oadby Owls Eagles 2  Wigston United Spartans 3 – 4th September 2011 (League)

EAGLES COMEBACK THWARTED BY LAST GASP WINNER!

Oadby Owls Eagles’ U10′s league campaign got off to a dramatic start in a 3-2 defeat at Coombe Park with the visitors prevailing through a last minute strike.

The game started at a quick tempo with both sides trying to gain the early supremacy, with the Eagles beginning to take the upper hand Wigston scored two well taken goals on the break midway through the first half. Despite the setback the Eagles kept their heads up and as Lucas began to get on the ball more in midfield were looking a more threatening force, this led to a goal back deep into the first half as Charlie latched onto a through ball to side foot the ball calmly into the far corner. The Eagles pressed for an equaliser despite Wigston continuing to keep the ball for long periods, which led to some excellent defensive work from James and a couple of smart saves from Matthew to keep the score 1-2 at the break.

Half Time – Oadby Owls Eagles 1 Wigston United Spartans 2

There were two changes at half time for Oadby’ with Jasper replacing Ewan who had worked hard up and down the right flank and team captain Bertie appearing for the second half despite illness in place of Alex M who gave a strong performance at centre half. The second half started with the Eagles in the ascendency with captain for the day Alex VD showing some trickery on the left wing. With time running out Oadby were pressing further up the pitch with Wigston dropping deeper into their own half as the pressure mounted. An excellent one-two between Lucas and Charlie resulted in Lucas firing at goal for Charlie to slide in at the back post to equalise.

The Eagles now with their tails up looked to score the winner and complete a great comeback and there appeared to be only one winner. As the home side mounted another attack there was heartbreak as Wigston countered, a shot from outside the area was well saved by Matthew only for the Wigston striker to stab home the rebound from close range. In a frantic finale, man of the match Lucas broke away only for the Wigston defence to scrabble the ball clear followed swiftly by the final whistle

Despite the result it was a great performance and the team spirit was excellent against a good footballing Wigston side which all bodes well for the season ahead.

Team: Matthew, Alex M (Bertie), James, Alex VD (C), Lucas, Ewan (Jasper), Charlie

Player of the Day: Lucas

Goals Scorers: Charlie (2)
